One Third Stories sends a Parent Guide describing the best way to use the subscription items. First you and your child listen to the audio book, next you read the books (or listen to the audiobook and follow along in the book), then you practice active learning with the activity book and flash cards and finally, you do something fun (write out postcards using works learned, play a game in the language, etc.) to reinforced what your child has learned.
Cira looked at the books several times without me which I was really happy about.
One Third Stories send the audio file of the book via email. My daughter, Cira, loves listening to books on audio so this was great for her. The narration was really good too! One thing to keep I mind is that the pronunciation is Spanish from Spain not Mexico so it may sounds a bit different than what most people are used to in the US and there may be words that are not the same as Mexican Spanish.
The book is adorable! The illustrations are great and the story was fun. I speak Spanish so pronunciation was easy for me but if I didn’t speak the language, I’d listen to the audio book a couple times before reading the book to my daughter. We’d probably look at the book and listen to the audio too. I was pleased to see that Cira looked at the books several times without me too.
The activity book included is great! The activities were fun for Cira and she did most of them by herself. I loved the activity where she had to draw Ruby’s face and label the face in Spanish.
One Third Stories also included these cute postcards so Cira could write to someone in Spanish.
We used these flashcards at the dinner table when we listened to the audiobook and we used them again after reading the book. I think these are a great inclusion!
Verdict: I loved our first month of One Third Stories. They did a great job explaining the process and how to proceed through the language activities. Cira enjoyed everything included – the audio book, the book, the activity booklet, etc. We try to teach Spanish in our house anyway since that is my husband’s first language and his family’s only language but Cira sees learning Spanish as a chore so it doesn’t always go so well. This box made learning tons of fun! Plus, in my opinion this is one of the best methods for learning a language. When I lived in Mexico, I watched soap operas (telenovelas) all the time to learn new words because context make learning so much easier. I love this method!
I think this is a great subscription is a great value. You get a lot to do and practice from this box and everything I received this month was high quality. If you want your child to learn a second language, this is one of the best activities I’ve seen. The price of $19.54 plus $5.15 shipping is worth every penny of what we received this month.
Do you think your child would enjoy One Third Stories?
