Smartass and Sass is a monthly subscription box designed for gals with a sense of humor.

Each month, you'll receive 4-8 awesomely irreverent items handmade by artists and small businesses. The women behind Smartass and Sass might not take themselves too seriously, but they are serious about supporting the creatives behind the items in their box and paying a fair price for their quality goods.

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out our review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

I tend to have a sillier, sarcastic sense of humor, so this box definitely piqued my interest. Last month's box was pretty cute, though some of the "humor" felt a little diva-ish to me. One thing I really like about Smartass and Sass is that they're committed to featuring smaller artists and businesses in their box (and paying them fairly for their work), rather than turning to discount sites for mass-produced items.

Every month has a theme, and this one is "Mornings Are Hard." The part of my brain that's still a 12-year-old caught the double entendre right away—you'd better believe it's intentional too. (Don't believe me? Check out the name of the first product on the list and tell me these gals aren't up to something.)

Again, I love that they mention all of their vendors by name. Not every box is as transparent as that about where they source their items. It obviously helps the vendors by giving them some attention, but it also helps me feel more confident that what I'm getting is actually coming from real small artisans.

So cute that they include this thank-you note!

There's a little sticker, too.

"Morning Wood" Cold Process Soap by Good Common Sense Skin - Value $7.00

This marbled soap looks so pretty, but the spearmint fragrance is a little extreme for me. It has sort of a bathroom cleaner smell about it that makes me less inclined to use it in the shower. I think if the other notes (of cedar wood and lavender) were allowed to stand out a bit more, it'd be more woodsy, grounded, and refreshing.

Check out our review of the April 2017 Smartass and Sass box!

Obviously, the selling point of this soap isn't so much the handmade quality or scent, but the punny, euphemistic product name!

Funny Pill Box by Picard Creative - Value $6.00

This tin isn't my favorite thing, either. Partially because that text-over-vintage-photo style isn't really an aesthetic that I like, and partially because I feel a little odd about the humor here. I've been close to a few people with clinical mental health issues in my life, so making those issues seem trivial or wacky just... eh... doesn't really do it for me. Not to say humor can't help in those situations! This item just isn't really a hit for me.

Check out our review of the April 2017 Smartass and Sass box!

I'm also so-so on this tin since that's really all it is. It seems like the kind of lightweight tin you'd get a shallow candle in, or maybe a lip balm. I'm not personally on any medications right now, so I'm also not sure how best I might put this to use.

Coffee Is My Spirit Animal by Near Modern Disaster - Value $10.00

So the last two items weren't my absolute favorite, but this pin? This pin makes up for it in spades! I'm a big coffee drinker, though typically not in a mug (I'm a cold brew gal). I've also been slowly collecting enamel pins and adding them to the lapel of my jacket. This turquoise pin is getting a spot ASAP.

Check out our review of the April 2017 Smartass and Sass box!

The silver metallic the enamel is set into gives this pin a nice shine, too. I've never been one to turn down a bit of sparkle in my outfit.

May Your Nails Get Compliments Nail Block by Smartass and Sass - Value $1.00?

Ooo, I've been needing one of these! This buffing nail block has a fine grain to each side, which is perfect for smoothing out my nails as they grow. And the sentiment is one I can totally get behind. It looks like Smartass and Sass designed this themselves, so I just took a guess at the value.

Mornings Are for Mimosas 4" x 6" Print by StarrJoy16 - Value $6.50

I thought this item might be a sticker at first. It's loosely in the box (no frame or backing or anything), and it has a high-gloss finish like a sticker or photo would. I like the saying well enough, but this item doesn't seem quite worth $6.50 to me. The info card almost seems more sophisticated. I feel bad saying that, but it just feels like something that was printed out on a computer and popped into the box.

I Fart in Yoga Class and Legging Lover Buttons by Francine and Georgia - Value $2.50 ($1.25 each)

Oh, how do I feel about this button. As a frequent practitioner of yoga, I can tell you that yes, sometimes yogis let more than their stress flow out of their bodies. So in a way, I'm like, yes! This is great! Understand that natural bodily functions sometimes creep up when you're putting yourself through a particularly tight twist—no judgment! On the other hand, I just can't see myself wearing this pin around, haha. I hope I'm not coming across like a square, but I feel like this is a bit too much for me.

Check out our review of the April 2017 Smartass and Sass box!

And as for this pin, well... I'm mostly just kind of confused. Why ninjas? Are there ninjas in your yoga class? What is the ninja life? I love leggings (wearing 'em right now!), but maybe I'm not as involved in leggings culture as I thought...

I Run on Caffeine and Cuss Words Magnet by Stampede - Value 7.00?

This exact design wasn't available on Stampede's site, so I linked to something similar. I really like the design of this magnet, though the phrase describes someone just a little more brazen than I am. It has some good stick to it, too.

Verdict: I was a little bummed out by this month's Smartass and Sass! Last month's box felt just the slightest bit more positive, where the items in this box were bordering on crass rather than sass. I received about $40.00 worth of items and paid $41.90 for the box, including shipping. Usually, I'd forgive a slight difference like that, but this box felt a little lacking in quality to me (the frameless "print", the overwhelming scent of the soap...). I'd almost rather get fewer pieces, but have them be really cool, rather than a bunch of items with more of a craft project feel to them. I really want to support these individual artists, but I do also want to get my value from the box.

What do you think of Smartass and Sass?

I thought this was such a disappointing box. I don’t ‘feel’ like it’s worth $40 even if it technically is. I’m also the kind of person who won’t spend a few bucks on a bunch of little knick-knacks. I agree with the overall review – love the concept & the kind of sassy products but would like to see at least one ‘hero’ item.

I immediately thought of The Pill, especially because of the vintage photo. Being
that the birth control pill was first used in 1960.

I love the pill box.. this box is definitely on point with exactly the humor expected. However, this box is in NO WAY worth $40 or even $30. I was thinking of subscribing but until they get some more value I just cant risk it.

AH

I love that this box supports small businesses, but it is pretty bad when the high ticket item in a $35 box plus shipping is a bar of soap!!! I understand that the value isn’t going to be like FFF or Boxycharm, but it didn’t even cover the cost of the box plus shipping. And that is with extremely in my opinion inflated RVs. Most items felt like dollar store items.

Ugh this seemed seriously overpriced and kind of junky. I am super disappointed because I just got a three month subscription. I hope this doesn’t become a trend – but maybe I could get a refund lol

IMO I think maybe you are a little sensitive for this box, which is fine! to each their own! as someone who does have a clinical mental illness and has to take her meds everyday, I found nothing wrong with the tin. but that’s just me. I’m also the person with a t-shirt that says “medicated for your protection”! I feel that those of us who do have these problems need to bring them to light in order to help others who are struggling and think they’re the only ones. sometimes humor is the way to do it.

ninja pants look like leggings so I think that the connection with that. I do think some of the items were cheapish tho. so I can agree on the value issue.

Thank you so much for commenting!!! This is why I love having comments – I like hearing different perspectives on these sorts of things. You’re right – a little levity does a person good 🙂

I related leggings to ninja status because of the ability to move freely and be able to kick a** if needed due to the stretch Lol I can have a more dark, “morbid” sense of humor at times so I’m also not one that is as easily offended with the things that are showcased in this box.

I also own several things with humorous sayings in relation to my own struggles. I started to question owning them & your comment put my mind at ease. In my experience, those who suffer along with us tend to enjoy snark and these kinds of items encourage us to be more open. I’m happy the reviewer expressed her concern over the item though. I also have to agree with Genya that this box may not be the right fit for the reviewer.

I think you and Genya are right that this box just wasn’t the right fit for me. I really appreciate you sharing your perspective on the pill box, too 🙂 Thanks for reading!!!!

Weezie

This is waaaaay overpriced, and saying things are your “spirit animal” is offensive cultural appropriation.

Heather

I’m just over people saying non-animal things are their spirit animals.

Maybe quit culturally appraising electricity that runs the computer you also appropriated? Using the internet- all appropriated. Hope you aren’t wearing jeans either.

Actually the concept of spirit animals is present in many cultures throughout history, including European folk beliefs (although they were called “animal guides” or “familiars”). Spirit guides/animals are often stereotyped as being Part of the tradition of indigenous peoples. In actuality, native traditions refer to them as Totem Animals, which many people confuse with the term spirit animal (not actually what any of the many multicultural traditions call them). The more you know!

Interesting collection…

My take on the tin was different than yours – after the morning wood soap and the long rectangular bookmark of wood (and coffee beans), I thought she was referring to THE pill.

As for the tin – they’re super handy in general for any collection of small items – you don’t mention the size so I’m guessing as to what it could hold – paper clips, safety pins, hair bands, bobby pins, buttons, small candies, etc., etc. I just would be wary of carrying it in my bag as it’s likely to make noise with items rattling around in it.

Anna Reilly

OH DUH! The Pill!!!! Wow, I totally didn’t read it that way, but it makes 100% sense. Thank you SO MUCH for pointing that out, Beth!

Emm

Same. I absolutely thought birth control. And it would be useful for bobby pins. I also love the aesthetic but I understand how it isn’t for everybody.

Thea

Haha! That was totally my first thought too.
