With the VineBox subscription, you get “3 spectacular wines in perfectly measured pours straight to your door.” This box, however, is a special edition box dedicated to the season's favorite beverage: rosé!

This box contains 2 servings of 3 different rosés all the way from France and Italy, which were handpicked by sommeliers from boutique wineries.

If you like this box, consider signing up for the regular VineBox subscription! When you sign up for a VineBox subscription, you take a short quiz about your wine preferences. (You can choose whether to receive all reds, all whites, or a mix and you can let VineBox know how adventurous of a drinker you are.) VineBox sent along an envelope of cards that explain the flavors and details of each wine in the box.

This is super helpful to me, since I'm still an amateur at wines. I like learning about pairings and the language of wine (fruitiness, body, and acidity).

Chateau Crostes Rosé 2016, 100 ml - Value $2.00 per vial (Buy a bottle for $14.99)

This rosé had the color and flavor of a regular white to me, though it did have a good bit of fruitiness to it. I tasted a subtle earthiness, which the description card calls "a waft of faint potpourri."

St. Martin Grand Reserve 2016 Rosé, 100ml - Value $2.93 per vial? (Buy a 2015 bottle for $22.00)

I couldn't find this exact year online, so I linked to a 2015 bottle for reference.

This wine was slightly peachier in color than the last sample, but it was still pretty pale. The flavor had a lightness to it, which I liked. To me, it was just slightly easier to drink than the first wine—it was just a bit fruitier, I think? But they tasted rather similar to me in the end. Maybe my palette needs honing!

Monaciello Rosato, 100ml - Value $3.00 per vial? (Buy a bottle for $16.00)

I can't find this wine for sale online (just the price of a bottle), nor information about how much is included in a typical bottle, so I guessed at the cost per vial.

In color and flavor, this wine was the most bold. I assumed that the fruity color would translate to a very fruity flavor, but I was actually surprised at how dry and tart this wine was. I really like dry wines, though this one was pretty intense upon first sip, but it ended up being my favorite flavor in the box!

Verdict: This was my first-ever experience with VineBox, and I'm not to proud to say that it struck me as just slightly more sophisticated than I would've liked. As I mentioned, I'm new at wine—the winos out there will kill me for saying this, but I kind of expected something more fun, flirty, and playful in a box dedicated to rosé. That's probably stereotyping rosé as a fun summer drink. This box definitely taught me how complex and varied rosé can be (in color and flavor). I liked that there were two glasses worth of each wine, and the vials, which I was worried might seem clinical or weird, were actually really pretty and super practical.

Okay, so, pricing. I estimated that I got about $16.00 of value in the box between the 600 total ml of wine. You're probably thinking, "Whoa, but this box is $49!" True. So here's the thing. My values are proportional to the cost of a full bottle. At a restaurant, however, I could see a glass of these wines going for around 8 or 9 dollars (if not more). They're high-quality European wines that might not be as common in neighborhood stores (I had a tough time finding them online!). You also get all of the details about the wines, which I considered valuable. In other words, you could head to the wine store and get 6 glasses worth of wine for less than $49.00 (plus free shipping), but I could also see spending $49.00 on 6 glasses of really great wine on a night out with friends. So I'd still say this is a fairly priced box!

What do you think of VineBox? Do you like the idea of a “by the glass” wine subscription?

It’s very rare that I spent $49 on a bottle of wine, and this isn’t even a full bottle. These would have to be really amazing for me to justify that! I have no problem spending $8 on a glass when I’m out, but that comes with great service, not having to do dishes, ambiance…etc. These aren’t even full pours! If I received a 3.4 oz pour at a restaurant, I would ask where the rest of it was.

I don’t think $50 for 3 glasses of wine would ever interest me, it’s probably a good thing they don’t ship to the Bible Belt- including Oklahoma.
