...some information on the subscription...
...and a coupon for Hanalei, the Hawaiian beauty brand behind this month's bonus item.
Bonus Item: Hanalei Sugar Lip Scrub, 0.17 oz. Sample Size - Value $4.36 (Buy a full-size, 0.78 oz. version for $20.00)
Speaking of which, here's the scrub! It's tiny pot, but I'm always up to try new beauty products.
As the directions suggest, I massaged the formula in for a minute or so, then wiped it off. I used a terry-cloth towel, though, just to get a little extra exfoliation.
The scrub has a great, sweet citrus scent to it. It's not too strong, and it smells natural, rather than chemical-ish and overpowering. My lips felt soft after using this product, but I didn't get the scrubbiness I wanted from it. There are sugar crystals in here that create the slightest bit of abrasion. The formula is smoother than I expected—I tend to like coarser exfoliating products, though, so that could just be me. But I'd say this is a good product for someone who has a regular exfoliation routine, rather than someone like me who doesn't exfoliate her lips often and wants something a little more impactful.
And now, let's meet the bag I got this month...
Betsey Johnson Glam Garden Satchel - Value $75.99 on Zappos (Retail Value $108.00)
I was a huge fan of Betsey Johnson when I was in high school and college (my prom dress was a glittery Betsey design!), but nowadays, I feel like her designs are a little too busy for me. This bag is a good example of that—between the stripes, the roses, the scalloped edges, and the gems, there's just a whole lot going on.
I do like that the bag has handles and a shoulder strap. The strap is really pretty, too—I like that the gold chain gives the look a bit of shine, but the faux leather in the center of the strap keeps it feeling comfy on your shoulder.
What's funny is I don't dislike any one of these embellishments—I just think that they overwhelm one another when they're all placed together. If this was just a black bag with gemstone details, or just a striped bag, or just a rose-patterned bag, I think it could be pretty cool. As it is, I don't know what detail to look at first, so the design feels a little confusing to me. There have definitely been times in my life when that more-is-more aesthetic was right up my alley, so I can see how this would be super appealing to someone else. But right now, eh. It's not quite me.
All of that said, this is a really well-made bag. The faux leather is thick, smooth, and feels sturdy. The bag is lined and has a few inner compartments for stashing makeup or change. Most importantly, it's got one of these handy clasps for hooking keys onto! I'm forever losing my keys deep inside my bag, so having a designated place for them is awesome!
The little metallic details are great, too. I like how shiny the gold zipper and heart accent are. It feels more fancy and fun than antiqued or more matte metal details I've seen.
Verdict: This month's curated pick from Ivory Clasp was a miss for me, but I can see where they thought it might be a fit. I like adventurous styles, and I tend to stick with black and other neutral palettes when I shop for accessories. So, an A for effort, but this purse will likely be a gift for someone who could really rock this look. The subscription costs $45.00 (and free standard U.S. shipping), which is fair, considering that even on sale, the bag alone cost just under twice that amount. The bonus gift was nice, though I didn't fall head over heels for it. I had such an awesome experience with my first Ivory Clasp bag (which I LOVE and use every day) that I'm not ready to give up on the subscription just because of this month's miss. Fingers crossed next month blows both the bags I've received so far out of the water!
