Shhhh by Kevin Henkes - Value $12.06 on Amazon (retail price $16.99)
I’m a big Kevin Henkes fan, but this one from 1989 was a flop for my family. It was boring and rote with subpar illustrations. Everything in the house is listed as sleeping until the little girl wakes everyone up with a loud morning greeting. The pages of the book on the edges were starting to yellow, proving that not only is this an old story, but the book itself has been around for many years. A disappointment all the way around.
“Stand Back,” Said the Elephant, “I’m Going to Sneeze!” by Patricia Thomas - Value $9.90 on Amazon (retail price $16.99)
Laugh out loud funny! This book cracked us all up. We loved the rhyming text and all the different interesting characters begging the elephant not to sneeze. Their reasons were hilarious and the surprise ending was a hoot too. This book is from 1971 and I’m surprised it’s one I’ve never seen before.
Verdict: This box wasn’t as much of a hit as May’s unfortunately. We liked one out of the two selections. The value this month was over $21 (using Amazon prices) which is below the cost of the box ($17.99 a month plus $5 shipping). I prefer when Lil' Bear Book Club sends newer, more modern releases and we certainly prefer the months when we get three books, rather than just two. Hopefully, July will be more successful for us.
