Loot Crate is a monthly subscription box for geeks and gamers. Each month they include themed collectibles and shirts - they've moved towards a mostly exclusive model - so you can't get most of these items/variants anywhere else!

May's theme was ALTER EGO!

Loot Crate kindly sent us this box to review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

The Subscription Box: Loot Crate

The Cost: $15.99 plus $6 shipping a month

ACTIVE DEAL: Build Your Own Custom Crate! No coupon needed - just use this link.

The Products: 4-6 items in Every Crate, $50+ of Retail Value, Licensed & Exclusive

Ships to: 27 countries including US, Canada, Australia, and the UK!

Check out all of my Loot Crate reviews to get more information on this subscription. Check out all of our Geeky Subscription Boxes in the Subscription Box List. Rate, review, and follow this subscription on the Loot Crate profile page.

Every month has a different theme, and May's theme was ALTER EGO. It features franchises like Spider-Man, The Hulk, Transformers, and DC Comics!

This crate turns into the Optimus Prime truck! I'd say this is one of the better transformations.

You'll get an information booklet with every delivery.

Inside, you'll find details about every item in the box.

Recently, Loot Crate started their Secret Order of Keys puzzle as well.

Inside, there will be puzzles to solve and submit on your Loot Crate account - solve the month's questions and you'll get bonus loot the next month.

Monthly Pin - Value $5?

This month's pin pulls from the ultimate alter ego - Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde!

The pin comes with digital loot as well, you can find out what the loot is in the magazine, this month:

You'll get the Green Ranger as a limited time exclusive character download in Saban's Power Rangers: Legacy Wars!

Transformers G1 Optimus Prime Shirt - Value $15?

This month's exclusive shirt is licensed from Transformers and features Optimus Prime taking shape!

From truck to Autobot, this shirt has a bit of a vintage feel both in the thinner material and the aged-looking graphic.

Spider-Man Webslinger QFig Variant - Value $15-20?

Get ready to add to your growing QFig collection with this exclusive Spider-Man variant!

This variant features a black and white Spidey, mid-webslinging! QFigs are getting better and better - including a fantastic new Wonder Woman figure coming soon!

Hulk Bowl - Value $10?

You'll get a household item this month - it's a green Hulk bowl.

It's a pretty simple bowl, with a Hulk's fingers printed on the side. This is also hand-wash only, and not microwave safe. This one was my only 'meh' moment of the month.

DC Comics Mini-Poster Book: Loot Crate Edition - Value $15?

The final item is a booklet of 7x5 mini posters.

I was a massive fan of the New 52 DC line - so this is right up my alley. It spans across all the different comic lines - so there's something for all the DC fans out there.

Verdict: I'm consistently impressed with the exclusive items and value that Loot Crate is able to get into a $22 box - this month is no different, and more importantly - it shipped on time. They've been having massive problems with shipping delays across a ton of their lines - I think we're still waiting on April Loot Wear items, ourselves - they need to get that figured out as soon as possible because it's leaving a bad taste in subscribers mouths. Rightfully so. But, focusing on this box alone, I really loved the June box!

I just got a notice that my “June” box will not be shipping til the very end of July. I posted the email to the MSA forum.

It’s pretty ironic, since I am so underwhelmed by this box & don’t even WANT it. But since I canceled my 3-month subscription & this was meant to be one of my final boxes, I’m not even sure if I can get a refund.

The Q-fig was cool as was the covers book. Hulk bowl nothing special. The shirt graphic is awesome but completely ruined by a bland blue that doesn’t contrast with the graphic at all making it ugly. Disappointing a simple color choice would have made the shirt awesome, and the crate a good one.

I totally agree, I think a simple black t-shirt would have made the graphic stand out as the main feature of the t-shirt, the blue although looks and feels nice, just clashed with the graphic too much.

I disagree, I think the shirt is awesome! I think he stands out just fine on the pale blue shirt and I agree that it’s so much better for summer than black. Besides, I’ve got sooooo many grey/black/white shirts, so it’s nice to have something a bit different. Maybe once they get their act together they can start offering different color choices for the shirts so no one is disappointed. The bowl was the only thing meh for me, but it will get used.

As much as I like the idea of choosing colors, it’s probably be a logistics nightmare for them so I don’t see it happening. Regarding the color, they did this before with the Mario Bros graphic. They put it on a light blue and the graphics didn’t stick out. I saw the same thing in grey later and it was so much better. Would have been the case with this shirt too

Donna

Funny my son loved the shirt color lol he is wearing it today.sell yours on ebay for $15 bucks it will sell in a day .ive dold a few of the loot crate shirts on ebay that my don didnt like ,this way no money wasted.

Rosemary

That is a great suggestion. I would keep my t-shirt, but my husband isn’t into the Transformers. He wears his pale blue “Bill & Ted” t-shirt all the time, and a few of his friends have asked me to swap for these t-shirts for them (so obviously the color is not a problem for super-tough Hard Enduro riders).

Donna

My sons loved this months crate the shirt is really nice my 14 year old son loved the color and the transformer design perfect light color blue for the summer heat .im happy they didnt make it a black tee too hot in summer.my both kids lovedbthe dpidermsn figure mu lil guy is 10 do he l

Loved the bowl its a great pricepointvthe comic book was a hit also grest sll in all and something for my boys too look fowardvtoo fun mail.

Andrew

The Q-Fig is awesome, but the rest is rather meh. The bowl is super disappointing…all it is is a regular bowl painted green. If it was a 3D hand, then it would have been awesome.

But I’ve canceled my sub anyway because next month’s theme and franchises are complete garbage.

Anie

I agree with you. Sadly Im stuck with a 3 month sub… wish I could just skip next month

Reply ButtonReply

Andrew

As Shasta said, you can skip…I did that for Loot Gaming last month. I would definitely recommend doing so until they have a theme you like!

Shasta

You can totally skip. Go to your account and click under payments. Then click cancel and it pulls up a screen allowing you to skip instead of cancel.

Shawna

I requested a size exchange for the Loot Wearable Power Ranger sweats back in March and sent in the ones I had. I’m still waiting for them to send me the correct size. Last email from them was essentially ‘sorry we are really busy, we’ll get to it!’

As for this box, I’m very meh about it. I’ll be listing most of it for swap.

Reply ButtonReply

Andrew

Is there a site you use for swapping with other crate subbers?

Tami

So weird. I cancelled tried get after receiving my May box, and have the cancellation email receipt from them, but I still got the June box. When I log into my account, it says, “cancellation pending”. I don’t understand why it didn’t cancel when it says it would. It was also missing the pin 🙁 Sent them a message

Reply ButtonReply

Cat

It used to cancel immediately. Now it does cancellation pending for awhile. I was annoyed when it did it to me, because it’s clearly a byproduct of the amount of unhappy customers!

I’m one of the lucky ones who hasn’t had any shipping issues. I didn’t really care about the Hulk bowl, but the rest was great! Loved the book and will probably have a frame on the wall that I can switch out the posters without damaging them. The QFig was great as well. I wonder if this means its just going to be QFig from now on and no more Funko?

I love this crate! The tshirt is fabulous and sized properly, my students are going to ogle the figure on my desk when school starts again, the images in the book are gorgeous, and that bowl came just in time to add to my nephew’s birthday present of a pair of batman/robin capes. He’ll love it! I even like the pin! 🙂 This is a bargain for me, anyway. And I don’t much care about late shipping, personally. It’s always a pleasant surprise for me and my kids when it comes. But, as a stalker of my Fabfitfun box, I can totally understand why it’s irritating. 🙂

I was disappointed in this crate for the month, it seemed so plain. There wasn’t really anything that jumped out to me but the figure, which came broken to me, I am hoping that they will replace it since it was the only thing I really liked in the box. If I didn’t like the theme for next month I wouldn’t be giving them another chance before trying to find another subscription service. I feel like they are trying to make the regular box boring so people will want to upgrade to the DX box, but that’s just me.

Reply ButtonReply

Jordan

I had a broken figure in a dx box last year. I sent a message with a picture of it and they sent a replacement, so you should get one too. Takes a while to get though.

Makenzie

What is the hulk bowl made out of?

Reply ButtonReply

Eric Cadman

It’s melamine. I’m just now realizing that the bowl says it’s dishwasher safe and the box says hand wash only…

Reply ButtonReply

Makenzie

Yeah I got mine today and just saw that too. It’s pretty confusing that the box says hand wash only but the bowl says dishwasher safe lol

Rosemary

I love Loot Crate. So does my Post Master…I give her the boxes and she constructs them with her kids.

Reply ButtonReply

Eric Cadman

That’s cool – I think they’ll love this month’s box!

Reply ButtonReply

Rosemary

I think so too. The last box was a little tricky for them, but this one should be perfect.

Carrie

I feel like Loot Crate needs to settle down and hone in on improving service instead of continuing to spread themselves thinner!

Jessicups

I completely agree! I love their stuff but the shipping delays are getting really old real fast. I’m still waiting for my May Loot Crate DX, it hasn’t even shipped yet. I was told to not expect to receive it before July, that’s just ridiculous for a $50 box.

Reply ButtonReply

Bret

I am still waiting on my dx as well, they told me it should ship this week or next ( so yeah arriving in July). But I still got the survey about the box and I saw you tubers in Great Britain got their dx box on time. Something tells me the “we love you” slogan is now just propaganda unlike when that started.

Alex

I’m still waiting for my April t-shirt
