Each box comes with a beautiful info card outlining the snacks included, and what the month's theme is. June features snacks from the northern prefecture of Japan, Aomori.
Nebuta Gaufre x2 - Total Value $2.30 (buy 20 for $23)
The package for this wafery apple biscuit is intense, so I was expecting something strong or spicy, and this is neither. Aomori has a festival each year called "Nebuta Natsuri" and the artwork on the wrapping is a nod to the giant float of a warrior figure that goes down the center of the city. This crispy biscuit is super airy, and the middle is a sweet apple-flavored cream. Perfect snack when you just want something light n sweet.
Ringo Financier x2 - Total Value $4.19 (get 10 for $20.95)
The Japanese word for apple is "ringo", so get acquainted, because the Aomori prefecture is the #1 producer of apples in the country. This soft little cookie-ish cake stayed super moist and is filled with super sweet apple puree and red bean paste (yum). This would be great with some morning coffee.
Aomori Apple Rusk x2 - Total Value $4.85 (purchase 7 packs of 2 for $17)
I learned about rusks in one of my previous reviews, so I feel very cultured going into these and know what to expect. No surprise that these are apple-flavored, even though the flavor is super subtle (which I like). These seem a little greasier than the other rusks I've had, but I think it gives them a bit more moisture, so they are not as messy to eat. The package reads "Please spend happy time with a very sweet, delicious rusk. It is most suitable for teatime." Agreed.
Aomori Ringo Cookies x2 - Total Value $2.22 (purchase 18 for $20)
These delicate single-serving cookies with minimal packaging were apparently a favorite of Aomori-born author, Osamu Dazai. With their subtly sweet apple flavor, I can see why. This is a nice little shortbread-like snack that again, would go perfect with tea or coffee.
Ringo Chip Senbai x2 - Total Value $3.20 (buy a case of 15 for $24)
And the visually stunning award here goes to this big crispy rice cracker! I appreciate how hard at work the Japanese Grandma is to make this distinctive snack for me, and I thank her. I'm happy to switch gears in this snack box for a second and have something a bit saltier. This senbai has dried apple slices on one side that are soooo scrumptious! This is certainly my favorite snack of the pack!
Wari-Sen Peanuts
Mmmm- the senbai prepped me for the shift in taste and now this mix is pow-powing me with crunchy, salty wasabi flavors. This assortment of peanuts, spicy sesame senbai, and wasabi-covered mini crackers is so addictive! The package features some gentlemen at a bar and this is exactly what this blend of savory snacks is making me think of: washing these down with a Sapporo would be excellent.
Karintou
These wheat crackers are pretty different than the other morsels. They are baked in a clay kiln and drizzled with 100% natural honey, which comes through in the slightest way. The texture of these are very...sturdy? I almost thought I'd chip a tooth on one, so I'm not really feeling this traditional snack.
Shubara Candy
I was happy to hear that these clear opaque hard candies can help prevent seasonal allergies because, for the first time in my life, I'm getting hit HARD. Shubara is a native citrus found in the featured region of Aomori, and I am instantly a fan. It's crisp almost like a pineapple, but also has a faint spiciness to it like a ginger. Big fan!!
Tsubu Matcha Mix
These baby rice crackers kind of look like croutons to me, but are just for snackin'. There are a mix flavors here, so a little something for everyone (who likes matcha, freeze dried cream, or dried seaweed).
Ebi Mayo Cracker
Here we have some baked shrimp rice crackers which, come to think of it, does go pretty well with the flavor of Japanese mayonnaise. There is the every so faint spiciness to these.
Verdict: Snakku is such an elegant and well-curated Japanese snack box! I was really impressed with my first encounter and can appreciate that they give you multiples of some of the selections. They did a great job mixing salty and sweet items so that I can enjoy these any time of day (in the morning with coffee, the afternoon with tea, or the evening with a cold beer). Similar to Bokksu, these items are pretty tough to find online (other than the feature products in their store), so getting a value of the full box is hard. If you like experiencing snacks you won't find in most other boxes, this is a great option. Snakku is certainly generous in portions!
