Driftaway Coffee is a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly coffee subscription that delivers new and different coffees based on your tasting feedback.
Every subscription begins with a "tasting kit," which is what we'll be reviewing today ($8.00). Unlike the standard subscription boxes, which contain just one type of coffee, this box contains four bags of delicious coffee, at two ounces each. After you receive this kit (which counts as your first month of the service), you'll start receiving just one coffee per box and be charged the full subscription cost.
This box was sent to us for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Driftaway sends lots of information in their box. First, there was a card describing how the process for coffee rating works.
There was also card providing information on the company and how to brew “the perfect cup.” I followed all the instructions the first time (except I don’t have a Burr grinder), and I felt fairly confident to do it without all the fuss (measuring the amount of water and coffee and the temperature of the water) after that.
According to the site, “the first delivery in every subscription, the tasting kit has four single-origin coffees belonging to the following taste profiles. Through this kit, you’ll discover the unique tastes coffees can have based on where they are from & how they’ve been roasted. There’s something for everyone (even tea lovers!)”
Rwanda Coopac Rutsiro & Rubavu
“Our fruity profile, which is a lighter roast, brings out the floral, caramel and lemon peel notes of this coffee.”
Each coffee comes with a card describing the coffee, the coffee producer’s story and some “Did You Know” information.
The flavor of this coffee was really nice, but I’m really a bold roast kind of gal ,so this wasn’t my favorite. Tried as I might, I could only taste the caramel in this coffee. Maybe all that bold coffee is numbing my taste buds?
Brazil Minas Gerais Cerrado
“We roasted this selecting with our bold profile to enhance its inherent qualities. The darker roast brings out the cocoa and dark chocolate flavors, which are well balanced with nutty notes.”
Okay, now this coffee is right up my alley! I loved the bold roast, but there was not bitterness and everything still tasted fresh and bright to me.
Papua New Guinea Kimel Estate
“We roasted this selecting with our bold profile, to enhance its body. The darker roast brings out the caramel, dark cherry and cocoa notes in the beans.”
Yet another winner for me! I love the rich flavor of this coffee, but I think that the freshness of the beans also lends a brightness to the flavor. I want more.
Costa Rica La Perla Del Cafe
The tasting notes on the bag describe it as: “Balanced - Chocolate, toffee, grapefruit.”
Again, a wonderful coffee in flavor, but a bit mild for my taste. I drank this happily though and could easily see myself serving it to company after a meal.
VERDICT: Okay, this was seriously some of the best coffee I’ve had. Everything I tried had a freshness to it, and there wasn’t a loser in the box. I especially enjoyed the bold roasts, but no matter what type of roast you like, I’m certain you will enjoy Driftaway Coffee. I also enjoyed learning about the coffee producers and about some new facts related to coffee growing.
Driftaway Coffee is a bit on the expensive side, but I think for the quality and the freshness you receive, plus getting to try new varieties each month, this is still quite a great subscription. (Each of the four bags in this $8.00 tasting kit ends up being at least $2.00 in value). This would make a fabulous gift for any coffee lover, but if you drink coffee, try it yourself first. You won’t be sorry.
