LitJoy Crate is a monthly book subscription box for kids and teens. They send books and interesting book related items. They have crates for ages 3-7 (picture books), ages 8-13 (middle grade), and 14+ (young adult).
This special edition crate is themed specifically around Harry Potter! Here's what LitJoy Crate's site says about the box:
Harry Potter's Year Two at Hogwarts! This Magical Edition Crate will take you into the Forbidden Forest, Dumbledore's office, and perhaps even the Chamber of Secrets! You'll find items inspired by the friendly and not-so-friendly characters and creatures introduced in the second year. Every item in this crate was carefully curated by LitJoy Crate. We worked with nine shops, three artists, and even created two items of our own to share the adventures of second year with you. Think disgusting potions and well-meaning servants, handsome professors and sensitive ghosts! Nearly every item in this crate is exclusive to the Magical Edition Crate. Don't expect to find these items anywhere else... not even Diagon Alley!!
This box was sent to us at no cost to review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

As soon as you open your box, the first thing you will see is this colorful image of our beloved Dobby’s face. Honestly, as soon as I saw this, I was immediately excited to see what was inside the box. Dobby’s image was actually the cover of the very thorough booklet of goods you will find in your box. There was page upon page of helpful information and fun facts about all of the amazing Harry-Potter-themed goods. Yay! Since so many pieces were exclusives, I just guessed at the value of each item.
“When in doubt, go to the library” Quote Mug - Value $10.00?
This LitJoy-exclusive mug is both cute and functional. A true Harry Potter nerd knows this mug is channeling Hermione Granger, so in true form I will be filling this mug with coffee and picking up a good book.
Howler Cookie - Value $2.50?
According to the info card, “The Cookie Bank is a small business run by Justine Banks in Provo, Utah. She custom designs, bakes, and decorates royal icing sugar cookies for all events and occasions for wizards, witches, and muggles alike!” Not only is this sugar cookie the uncanny representation of a howler, but it is also pretty tasty too.
Basilisk Fang Bookmark - Value $6.00?
Honestly, I know this is a bookmark, but you could easily hang this guy from your rearview mirror or even wear it as a choker style necklace.
Skele-Gro Keychain - Value $7.00?
What else could you possibly use when Gilderoy Lockhart makes your bones disappear. Duh, Skele-Gro... it’s the only thing that works! This little keychain is small, but definitely will make an impression hanging from your key ring.
Dobby Doll- Value $25.00?
This Dobby doll is handmade by Sweet Sequels especially for the second edition of this box. He may be small, but he is powerful and noble. Now you can have your own personal house elf watching over you!
Platform 9 ¾ Ticket Print - Value $2.50?
While we will never be able to actually hop on the Hogwart’s Express from Platform 9 ¾, we can pretend! This printed postcard that looks like a ticket to ride is just the thing we need to help us live out our wildest dreams of attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry.
Polyjuice Potion Bath Fizz - Value $6.50?
A special brew just for Magical Crate this month, it smells fresh, citrusy, and clean! Just sprinkle some of this potion into a warm bath for a delightful experience sure to relax you and prepare you for your O.W.L.S.
Rubber Duck Bookmark - Value $3.00?
“What exactly is the function of a rubber duck?” Is a question that Arthur Weasley poses to Harry when he meet him for the first time. As we all know, Arthur is obsessed with Muggle studies. This bookmark is paper, but it is finished and designed to perfection.
Moaning Myrtle’s Toilet Spray - Value $8.50?
Slightly lemon scented, this fresh scent spray is a great addition to any toilet to keep things fresh and smelling good.
Sherbert Lemon Candle - Value $5.00?
Albus Dumbledore loves sweets, so it came as no surprise that the password to get into his office was “Sherbert Lemon”. As the name suggests, this candle smells like a sweet lemon… perfect for the kitchen!
Magical Creatures Magnetic Bookmarks - Value $12.15?
Whether these are for you (an adult) or your kids, these magical creature magnetic bookmarks are a great gift/addition to any booklover’s collection. The collection includes Dobby, a Mandrake, Fawkes (Professor Dumbledore’s Phoenix), and Aragog (Hagrid’s former pet and friend). These are seriously cute!
Tom Riddle Diary Book Sleeve - Value $27.00?
If you are someone who travels/commutes with a book in hand, then this book sleeve is the perfect item to protect your book from rips/tears/scratches. You could also use this plush sleeve to hold your tablet!
Gilderoy Lockhart Letter - Value $3.99?
For the ultimate Gilderoy Lockhart fan, this letter is frame-worthy to say the least. Since this is the second edition of this box, the letter enclosed is all about Gilderoy’s upcoming posting as Hogwart’s new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. Very exciting stuff!
Signed Gilderoy Lockhart Picture for Adoring Fans - Value $5.00?
Signed by Gilderoy Lockhart himself, this self portrait is something you should surely frame as it captures his physique so elegantly. This artwork is detailed and really cool!
The Verdict: Because of LitJoy’s dedication to excellence, most of the items in this box are exclusive to the second edition of this subscription. So I estimated the value of the box to be about $124.14. The total cost of the box is $75 including shipping. I mean, WOW! Seriously, this box is amazing and filled with such unique and handmade items. The one thing I wasn’t a huge fan of was the inclusion of 3 different bookmarks… I know this is a book-themed box, but that seemed like a bit much. In my humble opinion though, as a pretty big Harry Potter nerd, this box was a win! Can’t wait for the next one.
