LitJoy Crate Magical Edition Review – June 2017

Check out my review of the Litjoy Crate Magical Edition for June 2017!

LitJoy Crate is a monthly book subscription box for kids and teens. They send books and interesting book related items. They have crates for ages 3-7 (picture books), ages 8-13 (middle grade), and 14+ (young adult).

This special edition crate is themed specifically around Harry Potter! Here's what LitJoy Crate's site says about the box:

Harry Potter's Year Two at Hogwarts! This Magical Edition Crate will take you into the Forbidden Forest, Dumbledore's office, and perhaps even the Chamber of Secrets! You'll find items inspired by the friendly and not-so-friendly characters and creatures introduced in the second year. Every item in this crate was carefully curated by LitJoy Crate. We worked with nine shops, three artists, and even created two items of our own to share the adventures of second year with you. Think disgusting potions and well-meaning servants, handsome professors and sensitive ghosts! Nearly every item in this crate is exclusive to the Magical Edition Crate. Don't expect to find these items anywhere else... not even Diagon Alley!!

This box was sent to us at no cost to review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

As soon as you open your box, the first thing you will see is this colorful image of our beloved Dobby’s face. Honestly, as soon as I saw this, I was immediately excited to see what was inside the box. Dobby’s image was actually the cover of the very thorough booklet of goods you will find in your box. There was page upon page of helpful information and fun facts about all of the amazing Harry-Potter-themed goods. Yay! Since so many pieces were exclusives, I just guessed at the value of each item.

Gilderoy Lockhart Letter - Value $3.99?

For the ultimate Gilderoy Lockhart fan, this letter is frame-worthy to say the least. Since this is the second edition of this box, the letter enclosed is all about Gilderoy’s upcoming posting as Hogwart’s new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. Very exciting stuff!

Signed Gilderoy Lockhart Picture for Adoring Fans - Value $5.00?

Signed by Gilderoy Lockhart himself, this self portrait is something you should surely frame as it captures his physique so elegantly. This artwork is detailed and really cool!

The Verdict: Because of LitJoy’s dedication to excellence, most of the items in this box are exclusive to the second edition of this subscription. So I estimated the value of the box to be about $124.14. The total cost of the box is $75 including shipping. I mean, WOW! Seriously, this box is amazing and filled with such unique and handmade items. The one thing I wasn’t a huge fan of was the inclusion of 3 different bookmarks… I know this is a book-themed box, but that seemed like a bit much. In my humble opinion though, as a pretty big Harry Potter nerd, this box was a win! Can’t wait for the next one.

While this box is disappointing, I find the review disappointing as well. The values seem off, like not enough work went into looking for them. The review was also missing the “something” that other MSA reviewers have. It read like the info off of the card that accompanies a box rather than a person actually reviewing their goods. I don’t mean that every review has to be all “wow, everything is great” but I do like a little more personality in a review. The picture quality and staging isn’t the best either. Nothing against the reviewer, I just wanted to give feedback since she seems new?

I would have been very upset to receive this stuff….Not to mention, this is supposed to be year two, but there are at least two pretty obvious references that you don’t see until later years. That in and of itself is annoying.

I think your estimates are over-valued. For example, $25 for that junky pillow “doll”? I don’t think so. I was so disappointed with this box. I saw their last one and thought they couldn’t possibly create two crates that were such a poor value for the money. I was very, very wrong. This was not $75 worth of products, IMO. It was a summer treat for my kids, and that money should have gone elsewhere!

I agree with you that $25 is kind of ridiculous for that pillow, but Chelsey didn’t overvalue it – that’s exactly what those pillows sell for in the Sweet Sequels etsy shop. I think most of this stuff actually has the retail value that Chelsey assigned. Now whether that rv is reasonable is another thing . . .

I’m sorry you got burned on this one. I would have been very disappointed in the items included myself.

Because they’re indie, the rv prices listed are what I’d expect to pay for similiar items.

It’s just the curation that’s questionable. How many really like Dobby enough to want that pillow? How many want, in essence, a fanficfition letter from Lockhart, especially since he’s mocked by JKR from the get go?

The quality is there, but is the audience?

Carrie

Yeah, I’d been pretty disappointed with that box, tbh. I don’t care for the doll at all, and the artwork is nice, but frameable? Ehhh. Glad I skipped!
