This month's theme is: "Bourbon and BBQ". One of which I am into, the other, not so much. Can you guess which is which?
The back of the card lists the products and describes them all in detail. It's great to see when boxes highlight local makers. I love trying food when I travel, so this is a great stand-in when I can't!
There's also a card all about the subscription itself. 10% of the profits are donated to the Houston Food Bank, so you can feel good that you're helping out!
No. Four St. James Bourbon Bombs, Half Dozen - Value $8.00
Good lord, you can smell the bourbon as soon as you open the bag! If you guessed that bourbon is the half of this month's theme that I'm not a fan of, then you were correct. I have a strict "no brown alcohol" rule, but these "bombs" are actually really tasty, even though I can tell they're made with (Garrison Brothers Distillery) booze. They aren't cookies, but are almost like a raw cookie dough consistency. They're really moist. You get a half dozen of these in the pack, but they're so rich, they should last you a bit.
The King & I Peach Bourbon Honey Glaze, 8 oz. - Value $9.00?
Wow—this honey glaze has a KICK to it! Normally I shy away from a fruity glaze on my savory meats, but this is super tasty. I can't even taste the bourbon, but I get the honey, some subtle peach, and a lot of spice. I'm pretty excited to try this on some meat! I did not see this available on their site, but other infused honey runs about $9.
Bravado Spice Co. Pineapple & Habanero Hot Sauce, 5 oz. - Value $5.99
This box is really pushing me out of my comfort zone with flavors, but I like it. Mixing a refreshing fruit like pineapple with a spicy hot sauce isn't something I'd usually go for. This has a rating of 3 out of 5 on the hot pepper scale and is 100% vegan. I tell you what—a little dab'll do ya with this sauce! I'm surprisingly into the spiciness that hits you right away that mellows off into the pineapple flavor. I'm growing as a person right before your eyes!!
Dallas Caramel Company: Mix of Bacon and Texas Drunken Nut Caramels, 1/4 lb - Value $7.50 (Buy a half pound for $15)
Never have I ever had a caramel with bacon in it, so this is a monumental experience. At first, I thought it had both bacon AND drunken nuts in it, but they are two separate kinds mixed in this burlap sack. The caramels are impossibly soft, and the bacon cuts the sweetness perfectly with its saltiness. The drunken nut flavor is made with Texas-whiskey-soaked Texas pecans. The nuts have softened a bit, being encased in a caramel bath, but they still taste delish. I can't really taste the whiskey, which is actually a plus for me.
Spaulding's Specialty Spices: Pride of Texas BBQ Rub, 4.4 oz. - Value $8.00
I'm glad they didn't stuff this box of goodies without including a BBQ rub! This particular one is labeled "Pride of Texas" (which I couldn't find in their shop, so I linked to the similar "Go-To BBQ Rub"). This all-purpose seasoning is to die for. It contains La Baleine sea salt, organic brown sugar, Tellicherry pepper, and onion, to name a few spices. I'm going to be preparing a lot of meat in the near future, and I can't wait to give some if it a rub down with this!!
Verdict: I really love local artisanal food boxes, and My Texas Market did NOT disappoint! I made a lot of surprising discoveries of things I liked, and now I have a pantry full of Texas-made deliciousness. I genuinely enjoyed everything they curated and really feel like a got a taste of local farmers markets. I calculated the value to be just over $38, which means it was a little under the $35 price tag after the $9.37 it costs to ship to me in Pennsylvania. I did estimate the cost of the honey glaze, so there may be more value there that I'm missing. Overall, it was still well worth trying all of these great items and getting a taste of Texas without needing to leave my home. This would certainly make an awesome gift for a homesick Texan.
