Me First by Max Kornell – Out of Print (Retail Value $16.99)
Something about these adorable donkey siblings, Hal and Martha, remind me so much of Sylvester and the Magic Pebble, one of my favorite classic stories. Hal and Martha are always bickering and trying to one up each other. But after a walk home from a picnic with their parents, they learn an important lesson about being friends instead of just competitors. My kids loved this funny book and related to the boy/girl sibling rivalry.
I Didn’t Know that Sharks Keep Losing Their Teeth by Flowerpot Press - Value $7.99
What a fascinating look at sharks. This fact filled nonfiction book had tons interesting information in a question/answer format that was very approachable for younger children. The illustrations were so realistic that some of them looked like photographs. My son enjoyed this title very much.
Miss Brooks’ Story Nook by Barbara Bottner - Value $11.29 on Amazon (retail price $16.99)
I’m a fan of Barbara Bottner and I was excited to see one of her books this month. Miss Brooks Loves Books! (and I don’t) is a title I read every year to my library class as an example of realistic fiction. This book is a companion to that title and this time Miss Brooks is back, instilling a love of oral storytelling in her students like a champ. Fabulous pictures by Michael Emberley too!
The Tomb Robber and King Tut by Sarah Gauch – Out of Print (Retail Value $16.99)
This is a gorgeously illustrated book about a boy named Hassan who comes from a family of tomb raiders and is anxious to work with Mr. Howard and search for King Tut’s tomb. The story is exciting with a historical slant not often sent in children’s book boxes. It was nice to see a different genre represented.
Verdict: The value of BookCase.Club this month was over $53 (using both Amazon prices and retail prices for books that are no longer in print) which is more than triple the cost of the box ($9.99 a month plus $5 shipping)! I honestly don’t know how they do it! I think getting four hardcover books for only $14.99 a month (less with longer subscriptions) is phenomenal. I can’t wait to see what they send next month.
