My box also included a folded info card.

Inside was my $5 off coupon, which is good for beauty purchases in-store and online.

Unfolded, the card shows some information and description of each item included this month. The products this month were chosen for being best-in-class beauty essentials.

Tarte Maracuja Oil – .23 fl oz, Value $6.50

This is one of Tarte’s classic skin care products. This oil has brightening vitamin C and lots of other antioxidants and fatty acids to nourish and hydrate. It won’t clog your pores, and I found this to absorb quickly. I have dry skin and I love using facial oils, and this is one that I’ve tried many times thanks to subscription boxes! I’m happy to have an extra.

Smashbox Cover Shot Eye Palette- Golden Hour - .05 oz total, Value $5.37

Smashbox has great shadows! I was really happy to see this little shadow duo in my box.

These colors are right up my alley, too! They’re definitely ones I expect from a palette named “Golden Hour,” with this peachy-golden shade (“Turned On”) and a warm, medium bronze (“Psyched”).

Here are the two shadows swatched for you. You can see they have a pretty, satin finish.

philosophy purity – 2 fl oz, Value $6

When I worked at Sephora I realized just how popular this cleanser is! It works great for sensitive skin, and removes makeup as well as cleanses your skin. It definitely leaves my skin feeling clean without stripping my face of its natural oils.

MAC False Lashes Black Mascara – sample, Value $5?

There’s no weight listed on this mini mascara tube, so I’m estimating the value a little. I’d love to see MAC in more subscription boxes, so I’m happy to get this sample from Macy’s!

The brush has short, stiff, fluffy bristles. They coat well but I don’t feel like I get much separation or definition. This is better for volume, I think. I will say the formula is very black. It’s also not a very wet formula so I didn’t experience any clumps and felt I had good control.

Benefit Cosmetics Gimme Brow Volumizing Fiber Gel - .03 oz, Value $7.20

This is a great brow product! I have tried this before – it has a tiny little mascara-esque wand, and the formula contains microfibers that help look natural and fill your brows.

Macy's Beauty Box August 2017 Makeup and Skincare Beauty Subscription Box

The brush is tiny, even on the full-size version, so you have good control and precision with the application.

Carolina Herrera Good Girl Eau de Parfum Spray – sample vial (.05), Value $7.65

Because perfume sample vials are so small, and I assume this is considered the bonus item this month, I normally don’t bother with values, but they do list a weight for the sample, so there you go. This perfume is sexy! Or, “evocative,” as is the fancy way to put that. It’s designed to parallel the “beautiful contradictions and ever-present duality of modern women and modern life.” It’s both fresh and dark, with notes including jasmine, cocoa, tonka, almond, coffee, and tuberose.

I like this fragrance. The bottle is cool, too – a super high-heeled stiletto, as you can see in the inside of the card here.

Macy's Beauty Box August 2017 Makeup and Skincare Beauty Subscription Box

Here I am wearing the shadow and mascara. I am not showcasing the Gimme Brow here, unfortunately, because they sent me the medium shade which is just a little too dark for me, and I didn’t like how it looked.

Macy's Beauty Box August 2017 Makeup and Skincare Beauty Subscription Box

I love these colors with my complexion, and the finish is brightening and pretty. I used the golden peachy shade all over my eyes and blended the bronze in my outer corners and crease. I think this was a nice shadow sampler because you can get a whole look out of it and it offered a nice amount of product!

Verdict: The August Macy’s Beauty Box had some great products in it! I definitely think they did a good job of selecting some cult-favorite products and products that are top sellers of each brand. I’m happy with all my items! The value of all my samples adds up to $30.07, not including the “bonus” perfume sample. I feel like the Macy’s Beauty Box is meant to compete with the $10 beauty boxes like Birchbox, Ipsy, and Play! by Sephora, considering the featured brands and number of samples. Even though it’s $15, it does include a $5 back coupon towards your next beauty purchase in every box, so it kind of levels out to match the $10 price point. Which sort of reminds me of how Birchbox used to give you basically $5 back in store credit for reviewing your samples every month, but perhaps the way Macy’s is doing it is more sustainable for the company. Considering the $10 competition out there, I definitely feel like that $5 back is necessary to include in some way. I still think the $15 price point could make it the first one people consider dropping if they decide to pare down their subscriptions, if they also subscribe to Sephora or Ipsy, etc.

Benefit Gimme Brow has been recalled. Benefit is saying ALL gimme brow products since January 2017 are under recall. I have been disappointed with this subscription and now even more so. Sephora Play offered refunds to all customers who received the Gimme Brow in their monthly subscription. Macys customer service says they can not replace samples since they were free. I tried to explain to the representative that these were not free, they are a paid subscription service. She did not understand and said there was nothing they could do from a product that was delivered in August even if it is recalled. These companies should be contacting us if there is a recall, not the other way around! The only thing that made the box comparable to other subscriptions was that the $5 off coupon could be used on MAC products at Macys.

I’ve been reading about that, and it seems the product is still safe to use if you don’t get it in your eyes.

First box and last.. CANCELLED! I only have Sephora and Boxycharm left and yes i always get target cause it’s cheap and always kinda usable in some way.

I already received my SEPTEMBER box the other day..(before Sept. lol) and I must say it is a helluva lot better than their August box.

I am going to stick around with them another round and see if they get better.

I guess that Macy’s is on a waitlist? I signed up in July and received a welcome letter. No charge or word yet. Do you know if there is a yearly plan. Would really like this August box.
Thank you,

If someone is interested you can’t use more than one coupon online. I’ve swapped for one coupon more to try. Nope. 🙂 I had to make 2 purchases and to spend way more money I’ve intended to. Sneaky Macy’s!

JuJu

Most sites don’t allow you to enter two promo codes. I can’t even remember the last time I saw one that did.

Reply ButtonReply

Nana

This was my first box. Not good and on the potential chopping block. I’m not even sure there is product in the ridiculously small mascara. I’ll give them one more month.

JuJu

This mascara is currently offered as a gift with purchase on Ulta. It says there that it’s a 10-day supply, and the reviews are good.

I’m still waiting for my box! It shipped from California on 8/4, arrived in Illinois 8/8 and stayed until tonight; it was supposed to be delivered tomorrow and has changed to day after tomorrow. Boo. I bought a sampler from Philosophy for maybe $10 which included the Purity & there’s only a couple more uses of it left so I’m glad to get that product and the Tarte looks promising. The others, ehh. That’s kinda how I feel about the Sephora boxes though

When did they bill you for this?

So I tried using the $5 off online… what a nightmare. I got an error, so it directed me to the customer service line. He got an error, so we had to pull in a supervisor and start the process over… and now it’s the next day, and I never got the confirmation email I was supposed to get, so now I have to contact CS again…. definitely NOT worth the $5.

Mary K

Thanks for sharing your experience. In all but the rarest cases, I only ever shop online. So if the $5 coupon doesn’t work online, it’s worthless to me and further proof I did the right thing in cancelling. I hope CS helps you claim your $5!

Christina B.

That’s odd. The $5 coupon worked fine for me. I Put the number in where the promo code is supposed to go and it took off the $5. Not sure what happened on your end, hope you get it fixed.

This was a tough decision for me b/c I actually liked the Macy’s box. It arrived way quicker than the others do & via UPS so right to my door instead of mailbox (a bit of a walk). I liked the clean, simple info booklet and the bag quality was way nicer than Sephora’s drawstrings or even Ipsy. However, I am *swamped* by beauty products so one of my 3 beauty boxes had to go. I couldn’t let go of sentimental favorite Allure that I’ve sub’ed to for 3 years now, even though they’ve overlooked me all four times in the freebie giveaways (sniff…). I almost cut Sephora instead of Macy’s, b/c I hate their variations, but it’s $5 cheaper, so it won out. I would’ve loved this Macys box had they done it 2 years ago when first announced. I’m afraid they just entered the game too late to be as impressive as they otherwise would’ve been.

Jennifer

I’m pretty pleased with this box. Love the colors in the eye shadow palette, though I will probably save it for fall. I’ve never used any kind of facial oil before, so I’m looking forward to using the Tarte oil. I absolutely love the Carolina Herrera perfume sample! OMG it is wionderful!!!

Reply ButtonReply

Amanda

Sephora usually has a price point of like $35-50 and they are only $10 and give you a 50 point bonus card which is gold to me and the main reason why I shop so much at Sephora now. Glad I am not getting this box because I literally have everything besides the MAC mascara and little perfume sample I could care less about. It’s a hard pass for me.

Reply ButtonReply

Lyla

Fastest sub and cancel ever. I thought they were kidding with the sneak peek. This box is all kinds of not worth it.

Reply ButtonReply

Monique Eckert

Agreed! I lucked out and cancelled when the first spoilers came out. I got an emall l yesterday saying that my card wasn’t working (because I deleted it😉) so if I update my card I would now get the sept box. Whew.

Reply ButtonReply

Julia

Make sure you update your credit card in the Manage Subscription page.

JuJu

I’d say YMMV. I will use every single item from this bag (except possibly the eyeshadow duo because I already have the exact same one, so this one I will probably put up for swap), whereas all of the four Ipsy bags I’ve received so far had only one desirable item each, in some cases because it was the one I requested. So already this is a much better value, at least to me.
My opinion might change if they mess up my bag like they did some others and then refuse to rectify it, but for now I’ll definitely stick around for a bit to see how things go.

Reply ButtonReply

couronne.de.roses

Agreed! I cancelled after I didn’t get the first bag and reading the comments.

But I got the second bag and love it! I hate getting products I can’t use… cool tones make me look ill! But I love skincare. I’d rather purchase my own colorful makeup and get staple products! Resubbing… this isn’t a bad box IMO.

Monica

Got mine yesterday and the gimme brow is dry. Not very excited about my first Macy bag.

Reply ButtonReply

justmissjamey

Anytime something like that is dry, or flaky, mascara even…add just a drop or two of visine, and don’t pump the wand, but put it in and just kinda wiggle it around, and it “fixes” it and is safe to use around eyes….unless you’re allergic to visine..

Reply ButtonReply

Krista

I subscribed to this a ways back but they never charged me and now I’m glad, this is generic and awful IMO. I went into the website and cancelled, I’m really hoping I don’t get charged for this month’s.

Reply ButtonReply

Barbie

I liked the brands and products included, and bag itself. Loved the mini pallet colors and the brow item.

Would love to see larger samples. (I liked Sephora Play too, but ultimately canceled because of the sample sizes.) The Philosophy size was great, but whenever I see a mini mascara, I find it really aggravating.

I’m willing to stay on board for a few more bags to see how they progress. I’ll get use out of the $5 coupons, too!

Reply ButtonReply

I completely agree with the statement about this sub being the first on the chopping block when I decide to decrease my number of subs. I don’t consider this in line with my $15 boxes. It’s closer in line to my $10 boxes. Not overly impressed and the $5 coupon doesn’t matter to me either, I’m certainly not going to be placing monthly orders with them in order to take advantage of it.

Reply ButtonReply

Ann

The coupons expire in 2 months!?! When my MAC concealer gets low, I might sub for 2 months (if the coupons stack) for $10 off my go-to concealer, otherwise, I’ll stick with Sephora. I love their brands.

Reply ButtonReply

Victoria

This is gonna sound horrible but…this bag sucks.

Reply ButtonReply

Dea

Agree. Macy’s came into the beauty sub field way too late. ipsy and Sephora do this much better. The MAC mascara is the only new thing here. And as for the argument “you get $5 back” – um, no, since you have to spend more money.

Reply ButtonReply

AmyM

Nothing really new or interesting, here. Pretty bag, though. Unless they step it up, Macy’s won’t be getting my money.

Reply ButtonReply

Kejuiana

i signed up weeks ago. no problems with money avail however subscription still says pending. no confirmation email or anything. whats the deal??

Reply ButtonReply

Michelle

I got my bag Saturday which really impressed me. Not sure why the other subs ship on a slow boat to China, as my dad used to say. I wasn’t wowed by anything but it’s worth $10. After the $5 coupon. I will give it another month and if it’s as blah as this one I will move on.

Reply ButtonReply

Jen

I’ll personally stick to Sephora Play. I like to shop at Sephora or Nordstrom, so the $5 coupon in this box doesn’t sell the price point for me. I can see how it would attract someone who already shops at Macy’s often and hasn’t had luck with the other $10 boxes.

The Tarte oil and Philosophy cleanser are boring to me, especially considering skin care is booming right now with fun and new products. But at least they are well known brands I guess.

Reply ButtonReply

Starr

Did anyone else receive theirs with any items missing?? I did not receive the Tarte oil :/
I’m going to email customer service but what can they really do? I fee ripped off.

Not really worth the $$ even with the coupon. My brow gel was either empty or dried out. The items were very small. I’m not very happy. If CS wont help me i’m cancelling for sure.

This is their ‘new’ subscription box, they should make sure everything is great so they dont lose customer right off the bat.

Not bad but not exciting either. I want to try that eyebrow gel.

Purity is pretty bad for skin in case the name misleads anyone into not checking the label 😉

I’m not sure how I feel about this sub…

I was initially confused about what was going on when there was no charge when I signed up and no communication for six weeks (signed up 6/15 next communication was shipping notice in 7/28). I cut them some slack for first box issues but then I was like…wait…this is Macy’s they should have their act together.

I knew I subscribed so I didn’t have any payment issues but I still think they should have charged right away (what company doesn’t want your money right away?).

As for what’s inside the box. I love the brands they sent. I wish that there was a high end lip product in there and not three “eye” products (eye shadow, mascara and brows).

I also wish the bag didn’t have that cheap looking image printed on it.

So, I’m torn… I do lime the brands they sent but I still felt “meh” after looking at this box. Add to that the customer service issues others have had and this sub isn’t sitting well with me…

Reply ButtonReply

Sandra holloway

I keep a second calendar for my subscriptionsand mail orders. I write on the side bar all my orders and how much they charge. In highlighter I put a pd for paid and sh for shipped. When I get a shipping date I fill in the name on the actual calendar and then cross it out when it is received. I always subtract the amount immediately from my bank register. I haven’t had issues with forgetting anything yet. So far for August I have 18 expected shipments.

Reply ButtonReply

Veronica

That’s a really good idea, i have so many subscriptions. I need do the same thing.

Loba

Yeah, this is similar to what I do (it helps me balance my “checkbook” and keep track of orders so I get what I paid for); so, I didn’t have any issues.

I still think Macy’s could have communicated a little better and their other customer service issues concerns me…

JuJu

Amazon only charges you when they ship the order. In fact, a lot of companies do that – if anything, it’s a much more reputable practice than charging right away but shipping only six weeks later.

Reply ButtonReply

Loba

Yeah, you’re right about Amazon (and some other companies come to mind) charging when they ship.

I guess I’m so used to when you start a sub getting charged right away and then falling into their typical billing cycle. I think that’s part of the problem here.

Sub became available 6/15. Sends out welcome letter same day you sign up. So that day will vary. But welcome letters says they bill between the 1st and the 10th. But they don’t bill 7/1 – 7/10. I got billed on 7/27 and the box was shipped 7/28. They wouldn’t have waited to bill 8/1 – 8/10 because the boxes were shipped out in July.

So, maybe if they didn’t bill right away then they should have billed 7/1 – 7/10 and billed those subbing after the 10th right away. They also probably should have sent out a heads up e-mail asking new subscribers to check their payment and address info and alerting them if upcoming charge since they didn’t bill by the dates they said they would.
