Yuzen
4.4 overall rating
42 Ratings | 12 Reviews

Yuzen is one of the original eco subscription boxes. It’s a mix of spa, beauty, and the occasional food item, and everything is made with natural ingredients.

This box was sent to us for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

The packaging of this box is beautiful! And all the items come in a reusable bag:

The Subscription Box: Yuzen

The Cost: $35 a quarter

The Products: Eco-friendly products to nourish the body and soul.

Ships to: US only.

Check out all of my Yuzen reviews and the Eco-friendly Subscription Box Directory!

Each box comes with a fold out card that details the items and brands featured. For each item, they also let you know why they picked it for the box.

Now, on to the items!

Red Flower Cleansing Hair Wash in Ocean - 50 ml Value $5.90

This Ocean scent from Red Flower is an essential oil blend of clove bud, cardamom seed, laurel leaf oil, copaiba oil, and eucalyptus leaf oils. I absolutely love it. This isn't your typical haircare line scent - it's more like a spa experience.

Red Flower Softening Hair Conditioner in Ocean - 50 ml Value $6.75

And I'm always happy to receive a set of haircare products instead of just shampoo or conditioner!

New Chapter Perfect Hair Skin & Nails – (15 Capsules) Value $15

Here is the description of this supplement:

The Astaxanthin in Perfect Hair, Skin & Nails activates energy at the cellular level, revitalizing your skin from within and protecting your cells from damage.* Astaxanthin is clinically proven to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improve your skin’s elasticity, and maintain your youthful appearance.* Fermented Biotin builds Keratin, the durable protein required for strong nails and healthy hair.*

I’ve noticed an increase in beauty supplements in boxes over the past year, and I’m all about it. (I take collagen powder daily.)

I sampled these before thanks to Love Goodly, and I can't say I noticed a difference, but as I take collagen everyday anyway, I might already be maxing out on my hair/nail/skin potential!

SHRAY Go-Getter Goddess Mask - Value $10

How cute is the packaging?

This mask is designed to help hydrate and brighten your skin.

It's your standard sheet mask. You leave it on for 10-15 minutes, then remove and let any excess serum absorb.

It left my skin feeling dewy and looking hydrated - no irritation, either!

Savannah Bee Tupelo Honey Lip Balm - Value $3.50

Back in the day (way back, like my Middle School days), Savannah Bee lip balm was one of my regular mall purchases at Bath and Body Works. I don't believe they carry the line anymore, and I'd forgotten about the brand, so this was a nice blast from the past!

And this lip balm is fab. It's super moisturizing, and I love that it's all natural/organic.

Shamanuti Activated Charcoal Cleanser – 1 oz Value $10

This is a gentle non-foaming gel cleanser that cleaned my skin without stripping it of moisture. And the natural scent is great, too. (I sampled this before thanks to Petit Vour, and I'm happy to have more!)

Poo-Pourri in Original Citrus - Value $5

If you aren't familiar with Poo Pourri, here's how it works:

Spritz 3-5 sprays into the toilet bowl on the water's surface. Proceed to #2 as usual. The natural essential oils create a barrier—trapping odor under the surface.

And the citrus spray is actually made with all natural essential oils - it smells good!

Good Spread - 1.15 oz Value $1.75

For every packet of peanut butter Good Spread sells, a malnourished child will receive an equivalent amount of therapeutic food.

And on top of that, this peanut butter is delicious! It's made with honey and cane sugar, so I'd consider it more of a somewhat healthy sweet treat, than your standard peanut butter.

And speaking of sweet treats...

Torie & Howard Chewie Fruities - Value $2

These candies are free of gluten, dairy, soy, GMOs, corn syrup, and artificial dyes. (They are 100% organic)

So basically, if you have a craving for Starbursts, these are the healthy(ish) way to go!

There are 3 flavors included: Pomegranate & Nectarine, Meyer Lemon & Raspberry, Blood Orange & Honey. (And they are all equally addictive in my opinion - I can't pick a favorite!)

Verdict: This box has a value of about $60. I think that's good for a $35 all-natural beauty and spa box. It's on the low-end value-wise for Yuzen, but I still think it's a good variety of items, (and I appreciate that there are some brands here that haven't been in Yuzen before).

What do you think of the Autumn 2017 Yuzen box? What is your favorite item?

I’m not impressed. The charcoal cleanser is cool and a new mask is always welcome, but the rest, not for me.

I didn’t get any of the pomegranate chewy snacks, not Yuzen’s fault since it’s a sealed sample package. I’m not super jazzed about this box, I agree that it seems like a lot of money for a few samples. However I do like all the products and the variety of things included. I’ll still give them another chance for another quarter.

I have been subscribing to Yuzen since they started. My seasonal box continues to bring me joy and discovery and inspires me to take time out of my super busy schedule to give myself a spa day. Both my daughters and now, several friends are Yuzen receivers. It has become my absolute “go to” gift for the holidays and special occasions and everyone who has received a box from me loves it…the beautiful presentation that is so thoughtfully put together and fun to unwrap as well as the eco-friendly and sustainably sourced products inside. If you are an individual who believes in supporting mission-based beauty and wellness companies, you might be overwhelmed by the many choices out there. Ted and Jen do an amazing job of curating just the right products for each box.

We are on summer holiday and we particularly loved the travel size Red Flower Ocean shampoo and hair conditioner that came in this box… the scent is amazing! Saving the Good Spread and Tory & Howard fruit chews for a hike with my daughters later today!

Thank you Ted and Jen for our Yuzen… and making our holiday a spaliday this summer!

I enjoyed this Yuzen Box! I’ve been wanting to try Savannah Bee Company products for a while, so this was a good intro. I’ve also fallen in love with the Shamanuti face wash and the Red Flower shampoo/conditioner. With Yuzen Box, I’m consistently introduced to brands I would’ve never discovered otherwise.

I gave all the snack items to my kiddos to try. Good to know organic and healthy items for back to school. The other products are perfect for me as I needed some travel items. The shampoo/conditioner smell divine. The sheet mask is very cute!

I love Yuzen! They always surprise me with items I would never find shopping. Plus their packaging is absolutely amazing! Love this box and can’t wait to try everything!

I am very disappointed with this box. The shampoo has sulfate and the balm has hemp so I can’t use them. The biotin supplement looked like a decent amount of capsules–enough to see if it made a difference–but upon opening the bottle I noticed it was 1/4 full. It felt like a bait-n-switch situation. $35 for a bunch of samples and a lip balm? Yuzen has reached a new low IMO. Total rip off.

On the capsules bottle, it said 15 capsules. To fill up the bottle, the capsules would have to be really big, and I rather have it smaller size 🙂

I think this is meant as a 2 weeks supply.

Were you expecting a whole month or 2 month supplies? Even so, depending on the sizes of capsules/tablets, usually I expect a lot of empty space in the bottle.

I don’t mind a 2-week supply at all. In fact, that is a relatively large sample compared to previous ones sent by Yuzen–good for them! What I do mind is the bad habit of a lot of merchants to include a small product in a large container to give the customer the false impression they are getting more when they really are getting less. Hence my “bait-n-switch” comment. If they were to include only 15 capsules in an obviously huge bottle, I would have preferred a smaller container to avoid the inevitable disappointment. Also, I think a smaller bottle would have been less wasteful. Maybe the merchant did not intend to disappoint (maybe that’s the only bottle they had) but I felt “robbed”.

My $0.02.

Yuzen was my very first eco sub box and I really, really, really wanted to keep being a subscriber but after a few disappointing boxes, sadly, I’ve decided to part ways for now until I see the original concept of spa at home.
