Play! by Sephora is a monthly beauty and makeup subscription. Each month they send you six samples, a PLAY! BOOK of tips and tricks, and a PLAY! PASS for in-store learning.

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Every month they ship all of the samples a drawstring bag with a different design. (I'm loving the pink satin this month!)

FYI – There are variations of this box. This review is for the box # ending in 870.

To find out which box you’re receiving at the beginning of each month, follow these instructions:

If you log in through a browser, not the app, and go to my account > account details > online orders and open the play! Order Details (it was dated 11/1 for me), you can see the “item number” next to the image.

The Subscription Box: Play! by Sephora

The Cost: $10

The Products: Five deluxe samples plus a fragrance sample, a PLAY! BOOK of tips and tricks, and a PLAY! PASS for in-store learning.

This month’s theme is “Fall into Beauty.” Now, on to the items!

Ciaté London Liquid Velvet Moisturizing Matte Liquid Lipstick in Pin Up - 2 ml Value $5.85

The "Liquid Velvet" name definitely held up - this felt like a whipped mousse with no drying issues.

The Pin Up shade is perfect for me, too! It's a red berry that's a little deeper than my regular lip color, but I liked the change. Compared to other long-lasting liquid lipsticks, this didn't last as long, but it still holds up well.

(Swatched in lower photo.)

Touch In Sol Metallist Liquid Foil & Glitter Eye Shadow Duo in Talia - Size? Value $8.35

(There is no size listed, so I'm estimating this sample size is about 1/3 of the full-sized version.)

How cool is this sample? You get both the liquid eyeshadow and the glitter eyeshadow:

The pigment and shimmer are great in both. (And the glitter is super glittery!) Just make sure to use a glitter primer like Glitter Glue to help prevent fallout.

(And props to Sephora for including a brand that I haven't seen in a subscription box before!)

Swatched in lower photo.

Sephora Contour Eye Pencil 12 Hour (black) - .48 g Value $4

If you are a beauty box addict, getting a black eyeliner in a subscription box just isn't that exciting, but this eyeliner formula is about as good as it gets.

It glides on, the pigment is fantastic, and it is instantly smudge-proof!

Here it is swatched beneath the liquid lip, liquid eyeshadow, and glitter eyeshadow:

I'm really loving all the makeup colors this month!

Belif True Cream Moisturizing Bomb - 10 ml Value $8.80

I've sampled the Aqua Bomb before (love it), but this moisturizer is new to me!

This cream promises to deliver "intense, soothing hydration," and I'd say they nailed it! It's a richer cream than the Aqua Bomb gel, so it takes a little bit of time to absorb, but it felt fantastic on my skin and it also provided lots of moisture.

Herbivore Blue Tansy AHA + BHA Resurfacing Clarity Mask - 14 ml Value $9.60

I believe this the first time Sephora has sampled Herbivore, and I'm thrilled to see it in my box this month!

This is a light gel mask designed to help soothe skin, reduce redness, exfoliate skin, and unclog pores. You leave it on for 10-20 minutes, then wash off with warm water.

You can definitely feel it when it's on. It is tingly and a bit cooling. I was worried it might be irritating my skin, but when I removed it after 15 minutes, all was good! And my skin felt SO much smoother!

Ouai Repair Shampoo - 7 ml Value $.65

Ouai Repair Conditioner - 7 ml Value $.75

This haircare set is color safe and free of parabens, sulfates, and phthalates. In general, I like the Ouai brand, but sometimes the scent is stronger than I'd like for my hair. Since most of the scent washes out with this, it's pretty much perfect for me. I didn't notice any major differences in my hair's hydration to justify buying the full-size versions, but it was a nice sample to try.

Verdict: This box has a value of about $38. I think that's great for a $10 beauty box, especially since the box will always include high-end brands. And I loved getting the brands Herbivore and Touch In Sol in this box! (And no perfume this month! Yay!)

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? You have to sign up by the 15th to receive that month's box, so as of today (9/18), your first box will be the October box.

Coupon – No coupons available for this subscription.

Value Breakdown: At $10 for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Liquid Lipstick: $1.54
  • Touch In Sol: $2.20
  • Eyeliner: $1.05
  • Moisturizing Bomb: $2.32
  • Blue Tansy Mask: $2.53
  • Shampoo + Conditioner: $.36

Thank GOD they didn’t send perfume this month!!!!! I have migraines and can’t wear perfume ever! I have like 40 already. I hope they will lay off for a while or maybe change the profile page to opt out. I got the box with algenist cream, fresh cream, eye shadow, eyeliner, wander mini lipstick and briogeo sample. Don’t care for dark lip colors very much and it seems that’s all they send. Wish they would send some nudes or light glosses.

I got box #890 as well and for the second time I have cancelled Play! I’m tired of getting the same color lipstick in every box. Or skin care that doesn’t match my needs. Or make up that doesn’t match my skin tone. And at least ipsy allows me to opt out of eyeliners which I don’t use.

The closest Sephora is an hour away and I don’t have transportation so the cards are useless to me. I resubbed to Play! because I had box envy thinking these were high end samples. I forgot that they only do the high end to certain boxes. I don’t need to pay someone to feel like I’m back in high school.

adoradesu

honestly, I’d stay with ipsy if you wanna pay $10 a month. I recently went with boxycharm and I love it. A lot of high end products all full size for $21 is so worth.

What a great box! I am a bit jealous, would love the mask and the eye makeup. I got a hair cream for curly hair ( have super straight hair), a nice enough Laura mercier lipstick, same moisturizer. Benefit gimme brow as well. After all the comments in the Sephora kit link today, I have serious mask envy though.

Well I am so happy with box #904 everything is exactly my skin type and concerns I’m having and the makeup items are usually what I wear on a regular bases anyway. September box is on point me .

Everything in my box this month is something I’m at least excited to try, even if I don’t love it. I so, so wish I would get an eyeliner in a color other than black though. With the money I spend on subs, I don’t feel like I can justify buying additional makeup on to of that, but I really want to wear something besides black!

Ah I wish I had gotten that lippie! I got box 555, which had colourpop in a cool brown (strut). I liked the depth of color but not the cool tone, so it’s a no go for me. It looks like death on me. But I loved the skincare samples! And surprisingly, the Gimmie Brow product was usable for me. I have thick caramel, medium brown brows on a fair complexion and honey hair, so most brow products tend to make them too bold! This product looked almost as good as my bar of soap and much more travel friendly.

Honestly becoming more and more disappointed with my Play boxes…..really thinking of cancelling.

FYI Sephora Play subs are open right now.

Shampoo foil packet leaked over everything, all was sticky and packet was empty, glitter shadow was dried up but love the lip gloss and blue tangy and belief bomb

Maybe its been too long I’ve subscribed, but I was very disappointed with this month’s play. I hated my box so much this month I cancelled. Crazy that birchbox and ipsy have been making me much happier than play.

Reply ButtonReply

Susan

Seeing this box made me happy I canceled 3 months ago.

Reply ButtonReply

Lori

I finally gave up on Birchbox and canceled them last night, I wanna try Play mainly for the higher end products that I wouldn’t normally be able to afford on my budget 😢 so as soon as I get paid at the end of the month I’m signing up 😁😊 I’ve had a Sephora account for awhile now so hopefully they’ll do a good job matching with my profile, fingers crossed 🤞

Reply ButtonReply

Tracey

They do not match with profiles, at all. Just so you’re aware of that in advance. If you get something that’s gels with what’s in your profile, its a fluke.

Reply ButtonReply

Lori

Thanks for the heads up Tracey! I’ll keep that in mind when I do sign up and since I’m really looking for new stuff to try them I think it’ll be a fun one for me. I’ve only just gotten into subscription boxes over the past few months honestly, I’d never known about these things before and since I’m on disability it’s a great way for me to try some luxe products that I’d never have the budget for otherwise. I’ve been having a lot of fun with them and I’ve collected some great stuff for gifting as well so I’m sooo happy to have found out about beauty subscription boxes! ❤️🤗❤️

Susan

Good luck to you, hope you like black eyeliner!! I actually canceled all the $10 boxes, just consistently disappointed with variety of product. I hope you find your perfect match. 😊

Lori

Thanks! Lol to the black Eyeliner! I don’t use it much but it’s great for stocking stuffers and all of my friends prefer black so it actually works out for me 😊 I kept Ipsy, Allure and Boxycharm and I’m honestly on the hunt for the best skin care for my oily, sensitive, aging, acne prone skin blah that’s a mouth full lol 😂 😂 😂 hopefully I’ll find it!

Setzie

I have tons! You can have mine. I can list them on ebay- or let me know!!

Toni

Well I got mine today, here’s what’s funny I ended up already having the lip color I was so excited to receive. But I ended up loving the black eyeliner, it’s like Liz said if I’m going to get one this is the kind I want!. My eyeshadow is all dried up I sent them an email we’ll see how that goes. The two face products I’m excited to try

Reply ButtonReply

Liz Cadman

Oh no – sorry to hear about your eyeshadow! Hopefully, they can send you a replacement!

kate

I really liked my box (506), especially that I get a little sample of the belif moisturizer which I could never justify the price. the UD liquid lip is such a perfect color for fall and so flattering on my skin tone. the only item i don’t like this month is the eyeliner. please sephora, you have a plethora of colors to choose from and you keep sending black. i just end up giving them away anyway. for once i’d like something interesting like plum, brick, mauve, teal, moss.

Reply ButtonReply

Nan

All those colors available look great. I may have to try them out.

Reply ButtonReply

Tina

This is my first month and I’m getting this variation which I’m happy with. I would rather have had perfume than tiny shampoo and conditioner. The lip color and eyeliner I won’t use because of color but anything unusable will make great stocking suffers for my daughters

Reply ButtonReply

Jenny

I am so picky about perfume I was glad there wasn’t a sample. I never like them. That said, the shampoo and conditioner samples were SO small there wasn’t nearly enough for my long, thick hair. So those were a bust.

Anna

Liz, I’m loving the value breakdowns, great job! MSA just keeps getting better and better 💗

Liz Cadman

Yay! Thanks, Anna! 🙂

This is my box! But

I miss the fragrance sample. 🙁

I’ll be upset if this is a new trend.

me too, i like having a variety of them to choose from and stash them into my bag

queendasia91

I have the same box. The bag is cute and I ended up liking the moisturizer [not sure why they would include it though because I have oily skin] and mask. But, everything else was a no for me. The lip color was too light for my skintone and I don’t wear eyeshadow [which wasn’t a good shade either].

Reply ButtonReply

Liz Cadman

Sorry to hear about the makeup shades not working! 🙁 Glad to hear you liked the moisturizer, though!

Reply ButtonReply

Tiffany

I would have loved to get this variation!

Reply ButtonReply

Liz Cadman

Which box # did you get?

Reply ButtonReply

Tiffany

I think I got 506. I am happy enough with it and really like my Urban Decay liquid lip, but my Gimme Brow is too dark, and I would have loved to try the Touch in Sol and the Herbivore.

Tina

If you want to trade for my liner, lip color I won’t use them

Reply ButtonReply

Tiffany

I got the liner in my box too. It is added to the pile of black eyeliners that I might eventually get through if sub boxes were ever to stop sending them! LOL. I really wanted the eye shadow from this box, like almost everyone else!

Terry

Me, too. After a 6 month run, with only one sampled product that I liked enough to purchase the full size, I cancelled this weekend. Bye Sephora Play!
