The theme for September is 'Space'. I appreciate the letter that Holly and Chad send because it explains why each item was included and how it relates to the theme.
Denik Obsidian Layflat Notebook, 5.25" x 8.25" – Value $11.95?
This notebook is bound so that the pages lay flat when you open it. The outside has a very soft texture. According to ScribeDelivery, proceeds of each notebook 'go directly to building schools and supporting the artists who design the notebook covers.'
Back Pocket SpaceX Notebooks, set of 3 – Value $16.30 USD (£12)
These beautiful notebooks feature SpaceX designs on the front and space facts on the inside covers. The space tourism imagery has me convinced – I'm ready to pack my bags for Mars, but only if I can ride around in a retrofuturistic bubble pod. I like the cross grid pattern of the pages, and the paper quality is very nice.
Pilot Opt Ballpoint Pen in Stardust Blue – Value $3.30 (marked ¥200)
The starry pattern of this pen fits the space theme well. Pilot has tested the pen to clip 100,000 times without breaking! I like the look of this pen, but it doesn't write as smoothly as I'd like, and it isn't very dark.
Uniball Jetstream Sport Ballpoint Pen – Value $3.15 (marked ¥150)
This was easily my favorite pen in the box this month. It wrote pretty smoothly and the quick-drying ink didn't smudge.
Uniball Power Tank Ballpoint Pen – Value $3.30 (marked ¥200)
I wasn't initially impressed with this pen as it didn't write very well for me, but what's interesting about it is that it's designed to write in extreme conditions. It 'utilizes internal compressed air pressure to push out ink onto the paper.' It can write upside down, in cold or hot temperatures, and even in the weightless conditions of space!
(My writing sample should say 'from the Earth to the sun...')
Duncan Shotton Black Rainbow Pencil – Value $2.34? ($7.02 for 3)
I would never have expected a regular #2 pencil to be my favorite item in a box, but this is the most beautiful one I've ever seen. It's one of those things I'm tempted to buy more of and hoard in case they ever stop making them. The rainbow colors are vibrant, and the black is a deep matte black. (The Duncan Shotton Etsy shop also has them in white!)
When you sharpen the pencil, it makes a rainbow! I didn't get a perfect rainbow on my first try, but I didn't want to over-sharpen my new favorite pencil.
Verdict: I really look forward to this box every month, and this one did not disappoint. My estimated retail value is around $40, which is well above the $29 cost. It's obvious that they put a lot of thought into the curation for this month's space theme. My favorite item was the rainbow pencil, but I also love the SpaceX notebooks.
