In the Deep Dark Deep by Ben Joel Price – Value $3.99 on Amazon (retail price $16.99)
The color palette in this book is very striking against the black background. There are mostly purples, blues and chartreuse. The story is a bit creep as the deep-sea diver, Robot and Monkey travel to the deepest depths of the ocean to figure out where the missing lighthouse light has gone. It’s told in rhyme and I felt it was a bit confusing at times, but my son enjoyed it.
Max and Marla by Alexandra Boiger - Value $15.90 on Amazon (retail price $17.99)
Max and his best friend Marla (a pet owl) fancy themselves true Olympians. They know that to be true Olympian they must work as a team, be prepared, take care of their bodies, and most importantly never give up. I love the pictures of Max and Marla and their snowy sledding adventures in the backyard. This is a darling book and we all loved it.
George in the Dark by Madeline Valentine - Value $9.89 on Amazon (retail price $16.99)
George considers himself to be a pretty brave young boy. He stands up to bullies and climbs tall trees. But when it comes to bedtime and being in the dark, well he’s not brave at all. George is forced to rescue his teddy bear and realizes that for a friend he can be brave even in the dark. This was a nice story about conquering your fears.
Apes A-Go-Go! by Roman Milisic – Out of Print (Retail Value $16.99)
This book was so much fun to read aloud because of the funny, rhythmic refrain repeated throughout the book. It just begs for a loud voice and I received tons of giggles when I read it to my children. A perfect town that prides itself on being neat and orderly runs into some trouble with some well-meaning but accident-prone apes. There is a happy ending and a lot of mishaps along the way!
Verdict: The value of BookCase.Club this month was over $46 (using both Amazon prices and retail prices for the book that is no longer in print) which is more than triple the cost of the box ($9.99 a month plus $5 shipping)! I think getting four hardcover books for only $14.99 a month (less with longer subscriptions) is phenomenal. We loved three out of the four picks this month and all were new to us which is fabulous. I can’t wait to see what they send next month!
