Box 2 Bake October 2017

This month’s  Box2Bake kit is a very Halloween-appropriate Dia De Los Muertos Mexican Cayenne Brownies kit!

Here’s everything that comes in the box. The numbers on the pre-measured ingredient packages correspond to numbers in the recipe, which I found really useful. You will need to supply a few wet ingredients and some basic baking tools, but otherwise, everything is included.

The first step was to heat semi-sweet chocolate chips and butter until fully melted and combined.

Next, add in sugar, vanilla, eggs, cinnamon-cocoa powder, salt, and cayenne. If you like spice, the recipe card suggests adding the full vial of cayenne- but if that’s not your thing just leave it out. I added the full amount (listed as ¼ tsp + a dash). Slowly add the flour in small batches and then finish the batter off by folding in mini chocolate chips.

The final product was great! The brownies had a perfectly dense but not-too-dense consistency and the cayenne pepper added a fun kick of heat without altering the brownie flavor in any way. If I were to make this recipe again I wouldn’t add the entire amount of pre-measured sugar, but that’s just my personal preference- the brownies were still great as is!

Verdict: I think it’s great that Box2Bake works with professional bakers and pastry chefs around the world to create recipes that are both authentic and delicious, and I love that this month’s kit offered a unique spin on a classic, familiar recipe. I think Box2Bake would be a great way to get kids involved in the kitchen and trying new flavors. However, at $24.99 for this box, the 6-8 servings come out to $3-4 per brownie. Adding the fact that all wet ingredients like butter, oil, cooking spray, and eggs are not included in the kits, in my opinion, I just don’t think the value is there.

wow $25 brownies? I agree with others it needs something to make it stand out, maybe they could have included a brownie pan? Love the honest review.

Great review! The box? LOL…$25.00 for something you could buy at the store for $5 at most? No thank you!

I agree. It needs a gadget, something that sets it apart. A mixing bowl, unique teaspoons/tablespoons set, a spatula or whisk? Maybe even a hard to find chocolate. As it is now, it’s just worth the money. I like the concept, but just not the product.

$25?????????? I’ll just buy an organic cake mix for like 4 or $5.

Thank you for your review. This could be a fun box but as of now the value doesn’t measure up.

I love the idea–but this is basically a box kit you can pick up in Walmart (and add a little cayenne) for $2 a box. I think this would be a lot better if it focused on a harder technique or added a useful kitchen tool, but to limit it to just brownies with a kick definitely seems off on the value.
