The box came with this full-color brochure featuring more information about the items and brands included in the box.
This adds so much to the subscription for me - it's great to read the stories and inspirations behind each product in the box.
Now, on to the items!
Badala Serving Spoons - Value $18
These wooden serving spoons are gorgeous! I love the painted handle accent, too.
(You'll either receive gold, green or red painted handles.)
The spoons are hand carved from locally sourced olive wood in Kenya.
And here's more about the amazing mission behind this brand:
It all started when, at seventeen, I was struck with this realization: people are dying by the millions just because they don't have enough to eat. If this was going to continue happening in our world, it wasn't going to be because I didn't do anything about it, so as a restless and passionate high school senior, I founded BADALA as a fundraising organization.
When I traveled to Africa for the first time, I befriended women who were prostituting themselves just to feed their children. Instead of asking for hand outs, everyone I met was looking for opportunities. Our line of jewelry and accessories, and later our housewares, was born out of this request for employment.
Since launching in Kenya, we have since expanded our employment programs to women and artisans across East Africa, Central America, and domestic sex trafficking survivors.
Thank you for joining us in this journey to see poverty and sex trafficking ended!
Jimani Collection Triangle Bone Necklace - Value $35
This necklace is made of white bone with a hand casted brass casing.
At first, I was a little surprised/concerned about the bone material, but no worries! The piece is made from bone that would have otherwise been discarded:
The bone used in our pieces is upcycled, collected from local farmers who would otherwise discard it. Nomadic tribes in Kenya view each piece of an animal as sacred, and our artisans craft each piece as a sign of respect towards the animal. No animal will ever be harmed in the making of our products.
And the back is beautiful enough that you could actually wear it in reverse if you wanted!
Here it is on:
I'm all about minimal jewelry, so this is perfect for me.
More on the cause behind this brand:
Jimani Collections began with a small group of impoverished Kenyan women and a short class based on learning basic jewelry skills. With the help of many dedicated people both in the US and in Kenya, Jimani Collections has grown from a one-week class into an ongoing training and design entity.
Jimani Collections seeks to create a sustainable solution to poverty. We work with some of the poorest in the world - women who have experienced a harsh reality that few in the US can imagine. We offer these women employment and education within product design and product creation. By building a bridge between consumers and artisans in the developing world, we're able to promote equitable trade while alleviating widespread poverty.
At Jimani Collections we aim to:
- Provide women with vocational skills through targeted training programs, like our Entrepreneurship Program
- Offer sustainable income and a safe workplace for women who have neither
- Develop a supportive, uplifting community
- Showcase the workmanship of the ladies through unique, well-crafted products
Through innovation, education, and design, Jimani Collections exists to transform and expand access to economic opportunity for artisans in underserved communities worldwide.
Mr. B's Necessities Aromatherapy Roll-Ons Set - Value $49.95
Props to CAUSEBOX for sending an entire set!
All rolls on are made with 100% natural ingredients. The formulas all start with Jojoba Oil and Sweet Almond Oil, then add in different essential oils.
Stress/Anxiety Relief - a blend of Ylang Ylang, Patchouli, and Vetiver Essential oils
Calm/Sleep - a blend of Lavender, Orange, and Spruce Essential oils.
Immunity Booster - a blend of Tea Tree, Palmarosa, and Black Pepper Essential oils
Headache Relief - a blend of Peppermint, Lemon, and Eucalyptus Essential oils
Energy Boost - a blend of Ginger, Niaouli, and Elemi Essential oils
All the scents are nice, but the Headache Relief is my favorite - I love the Peppermint + Lemon scent! (I'm fortunate enough to not really ever get headaches, but I'll still be using this one the most!)
Mela Artisans Picture Frame - Value $50?
(I couldn't find this exact frame on the Mela Artisans website, so I'm using the lowest price of their other frames. The value may actually be higher.)
The quality of this piece is so impressive! It looks like one uniform frame, but it's all individual pieces of bone that were crafted to perfectly fit together. (Each frame takes about 4 to 5 hours to make.)
The frame holds a 4 by 6 inch photo.
Mela Artisans works to help provide jobs for people in India and keep age-old traditions and techniques alive with new modern styling in their products. (Learn more about their cause here.)
Nisolo Luggage Tag - Value $30?
(Estimating on value based on similar items. All subscribers will receive one of three shades of leather.)
This luggage tag is upcycled from leather scraps from shoemaking that otherwise would have been thrown out, donated, or sold.
The quality is excellent - this is a classic piece I can use for years.
All Nisolo producers receive, at a minimum, beyond fair trade wages, healthcare, and a healthy working environment. Your purchase enables us to create opportunity for over 500 people across our supply chain.
CAUSEBOX Magnets - Value $10?
These are exclusive to the box, so I'm estimating on value.
I'm loving how they tie the colors of this box altogether! The magnets are so bold and fun!
And now I'm remembering how popular the magnetic poetry sets were when I was in high school!
Bold Print
Every season, CAUSEBOX sends out a new 5" X 7" art print (4" X 6" - thanks Lisa!) from a different artist.
Verdict: This box has a value of about $193! I'm amazed! It's such a quality box AND it supports fair trade, giving back, etc. What a win-win box! I really love the designs this season, too. (It's hard to pick, but the photo frame is my favorite item in the box!)
