Ipsy is a monthly beauty and makeup subscription box. Each month you get full-size or deluxe-sized products, plus a cute makeup bag. I think it’s one of the best value beauty subscriptions and a great way to build out your makeup collection on the cheap!

This is one of my top recommendations if you are looking for a beauty box - the value and sample sizes are amazing. (Check out my list of the Top Beauty Boxes for 2017 and our reviews of Cheap Subscription Boxes for more recommendations!)

(FYI – Just like Birchbox, Ipsy sends out many different variations of their bag each month – so my review is just one of the bag variations you might receive!)

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

The Subscription Box: Ipsy

The Cost: $10 a month (free shipping)

The Products: Full size and samples of makeup and beauty products. (Plus a makeup bag!)

Ships to: US and Canada

Delivered via: USPS

Each month, ipsy subscribers get a makeup bag in addition to their 5 items.

This bag has a lace print with a matte finish. And a somewhat subtle nod to Halloween:

Yay for a bat zipper pull! (Last year's Halloween bag is still my favorite, though!)

Now, on to the items!

Rimmel London Lasting Finish by Kate Nude Collection in Shade 47 - FULL SIZE! Value $5

LOVE this color! It's a warm pink neutral - totally wearable! And it's moisturizing, creamy, and well-pigmented!

(Swatched in lower photo.)

Smashbox Photo Finish Lid Primer in Light - .5 ml Value $5.25

I use Smashbox foundation primer all the time, and this lid primer works well, too. (It reduced eyeshadow fallout and creasing.)

The light shade also is close to my skintone, so it can double as concealer in a pinch. Here it is swatched above the lipstick:

Context Vitamin C All Day Eye Cream - FULL SIZE! Value $35

Wow! Full-size eye cream! I haven't had a high-value ipsy bag in a few months, and I'm happy to break that pattern!

This formula is lightweight, hydrating, absorbs quickly, is fragrance free, and ingredient-conscious! Pretty much a dream eye cream!

BLAQ Mask - 15 ml Value $7.25

I was SO pumped to try this mask! (I'm pretty addicted to Biore Pore Strips, and I'm always looking for any product that helps clean out pores!)

To use it, you apply it to clean, damp skin, then let dry for 15-20 minutes. (I recommend trying this on your nose and forehead post-shower when your pores are opened up.) And after trying it out my nose I can confirm that it actually works! Complete with the somewhat gross but satisfying pore dirt visible on the mask when you pull it off!

It Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores Pressed Finishing Powder - 3 g Value $9.67

I love IT Cosmetics and was so excited to try this when I saw it in my glam bag!

The translucent powder is designed to help mattify skin, hide pores, and give you an airbrushed like finish. It definitely delivered on all those things, but at varying degrees. Matte finish? Check! Hidden pores? Eh...I can still see them, but they are less noticeable. Airbrushed finish? Pretty much! This gave my makeup a flattering blur effect, and my skin felt a little more silkier to the touch, too.

Verdict: This box has a value of about $62.17. That's double the value of my glam bag last month! (And it is great for a $10 beauty subscription!) Even better, all these items are great fits for me, and I got to try some new products/brands that I love!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, if you sign up in this month, you'll get next month's box as your first box. (Check out our Ipsy Spoilers to see what's coming up next)

Value Breakdown: At $10 for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Lipstick: $.80
  • Lid Primer: $.84
  • Eye Cream: $5.63
  • Mask: $1.17
  • IT Cosmetics Powder: $1.56
  • Bag - Not counted toward value

Good to know: Ipsy sends out variations. You may get a completely different bag than me.

What is happening with Ipsy offers, btw? The upgrade made everything so much worse, and this week they haven’t been updating well. There is still nothing up for today.

They post it via facebook now with a link and for some reason still don’t show it on the official website until WAY later. No idea why. My theory is the main social media person is on vacation and they have an intern doing it or something. Otherwise, I see no benefit to them for not listing it on the offers at 9PST as noted on their site…

Just wanted to pop in and warn people about the Blaq mask–it definitely looks cool and is satisfying as all get out, but we should probably think twice about using it. I tried mine last night, and wanted to point out that (a) it can get stuck if you don’t put it on thickly enough–even if you just miss a few spots, it can get impossible to get off, and (b) according to searches I did when mine was stuck, it’s actually awful for you. What feels like removing blackheads and making your skin smooth is actually just the result of ripping off your top layer of skin, and it takes your skin about a month to recover. Don’t do it!!

Generally when an ipsy product is a miss for me I see it as a wash, but I’m kind of annoyed at myself that I even tried this one. It’s a good reminder to research BEFORE you smear stuff on your face, I guess!

Hi Beth, I just wanted to thank you for this warning cuz I have very sensitive skin and I was excited to see this in my Ipsy bag. I’m prolly just going to toss it now cuz it’s no it worth the pain or misery to my skin. 😉🙁😊

Beth

The thing is, it’s SO satisfying that it’s still totally tempting–I’ve been eyeing my tube and toying with “hey, maybe I could just use it not on my face?” It’s SO fun to remove! BUT the more I research, the more it definitely seems like a Very Bad Idea…and I can attest that, after using it on Sunday night (with NO other changes to my routine the last few days) I’ve ended up breaking out worse than I ever have. It’s definitely not worth it. 🙁

I just subscribed today! I can’t wait to get my first ipsy bag. Not sure yet if it’ll be this month’s or next, but still, I’m really excited! 🙂

It will be November.

My bag was a mostly miss for me. I got the MDM Flow in Retro liquid lipstick and was really excited to try it so I put it on right away. The color was really nice. But when I went to rub my lips together, my lips stuck to each other like glue. I had to work to get my lips apart! I also had to work really hard to remove the glue-like liquid lipstick from my lips. Anyone else have this problem? I threw the lipstick out. Maybe I got a bad batch, but it felt truly awful on my lips and I have about 150 different lips products so I have tried them all without ever experiencing this.
Also, my nail polish came completely dried out. Not that the color “Lava” was any good to begin with. Horrible non-color, would have given it away.

Trisha

I love that color in the MDM lippie but you have to use the smallest amount and let it dry for like FOREVER b4 you press your lips together. Then I top it with a little bit of Jouer gloss in nearly the same color.
It’s not a favorite brand for me- I have another color & it’s the same way. I’m only going to keep it because I can use up the Jouer gloss ( which I’m not crazy about either). It does last hours and hours tho unless you eat… then it’s history.

The Skinvolve Phoenician Secret Scrub – Peppermint… just don’t. Holy cow, I used it this morning in the shower and could only stand it maybe 2 minuets. I absolutely froze! & now I’m sweating like crazy. It’s like rubbing icy hot over your whole body. Bad idea. On a positive note, my entire master bathroom & bedroom smell good right now like a peppermint coffee.

I was pretty happy with my bag compared to recent months! I got:

Bye Bye Pores Powder
Hey Honey concealer
Tarte mascara
Blaq Mask
Luna Lip Crayon (only one I 100% did not care for- didn’t like the shade or the consistency)

Charlene

I am one of the few disappointed ones.

I hadn’t gotten a bag in about half a year but they sucked me in and every time I get suckered into one I am disappointed. You would think I would learn.

I only got one full sized item which was a shimmery eye shadow by Dirty Little Secrets. Make Up For Ever Foundation which was minuscule, looked like I could go to Ulta and just ask for a sample and would get the same thing for free. Small thing of face wash. And a tiny sample size mascara by Tarte.

Reply ButtonReply

Anita

I got the Marc Anthony hair oil & mine was sealed but I did notice it seems to not be as full as it should be.

Reply ButtonReply

Frances W

I received my bag today and I love everything in it. I still can’t believe this is only a $10 bag!
3 of the 5 items were full size and the RV was $57.91. Crazy.

Context Eye Cream
It Bye Bye Pores
JMsolution Cleanser
Essence Coral blush
Smashbox Lid primer

And I love the tiny sponge pad that came with the IT powder! It’s perfect for my purse to accompany my sample sized Tarte Smooth Operator Amazonian clay finishing powder.

Reply ButtonReply

Leslie Belt

I got Marc Anthony coconut oil & Shea butter
Furless eye blending brush
Urban decay eyeliner
Meech and Mia purple pigment shadow it’s purple but looks brown
Tarte lifted mascara

Still waiting on my second bag!
My daughter got almost the exact same bag except she got lights camera action mascara by Tarte and a different brand of eyeshadow. My other daughters haven’t opened theirs yet to see what they got!

Curious, was anyone else’s Marc Anthony Coconut oil only half full? My little foil seal was removed (still there just not sealed? Weird) but my bottle is only half full, not sure if I lost half in shipping or if it was only half full to begin with? I asked my daughter who got the same…her reply she’s too lazy to look! (Teenagers! Ugh!) maybe I’ll be too lazy to re-sub for her! Haha!!

I haven’t attempted to get a $ amount on my bag this month but most months my ipsy is worth right around $100 or a little more! GREAT investment for $10! I get a makeup brush almost every month! (And a black eyeliner! I’ll NEVER use all of it even if I give it to my 3 daughters!)

I usually get mostly full sized items, possibly the way I have my profile filled out. No skincare, no nail polish. I’m never let down with Ipsy!

I have never received full size products other than one eye shadow brush. I’m seriously considering canceling my subscription and signing up with BoxyCharm instead. I’ve liked some of the samples I’ve received but 9 times out of 10 the samples are so tiny. I like what other people receive though. It seems like I always get the opposite of what I would have liked to get. I’m going to give it through the December and then cancel it and sign up for a different monthly subscription (unless they get a lot better between now and then).

Reply ButtonReply

Heather

I got the oil, too. Mine did not come sealed either, and it was opened and coated everything in my bag for the month.

Reply ButtonReply

Frances W

There is an individual on reddit/beauty boxes who posts a spreadsheet every month with all the calculations. Must be an accountant. This month’s post is called “October Ipsy Product Values” if you want to go search for it.

Reply ButtonReply

Jessica

My Marc Anthony bottle seemed not full and the seal was stuck inside the lid. It took me a minute of squeezing to figure it out. I think since the inside of the bag wasn’t covered in oil it’s ok?

Sharon

♥ my October glam bag and makeup & the November preview is awesome too!

Heidi

Got my bag and I love the bag itself but I am only stoked about three of the five items.

1) UD liner in Perversion–love this!
2) First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair® Cream–heard a lot about this company and I am excited to try this as a nighttime moisturizer.
3) MEECH AND MIA Loose Eyeshadow in Purple. I have a new brush set coming so I will be dipping into pigments again so I am excited to try this.
4) Dermelect Cosmeceuticals Dermelect ‘Me’ in Verdure. It is a dark green polish that doesn’t flatter me at all. Wow, I am getting rid of this.
5) MDMflow Liquid Matte Lipstick in Retro. I’m not into liquid lipsticks and definitely not matte ones plus I like a darker lip shade in the fall/winter. It’s a nice big one but I am giving it away.

This is, for me, the weakest bag I have gotten to date. I usually don’t have two items in a bag that I am not into, only maybe one.

Reply ButtonReply

Lisa

This is my favorite bag. Its due tomorrow but I rarely get my bag on exact date they tell me. I have learned not to expect it way less frustration that way. Anyway on to the goodies
MDM lippie full size baby!
Mitch and Mia eye shadow don’t know the color I mean I requested purple BUT what they are sending does not look like the purple I learned about in Kindergarten !
2 Masks
Urban Decay in black bummer but good size good brand eases sting a little.
Tarte mascara in lights camera etc. I was excited to see that cause I wanted it last month.
So ya yay me. 🙂

Maybe it’s just mine but my full size of it consmetics presses bye bye pores powder develops hard pan SO quickly it’s ridiculous. I use the tape method to remove it and your still happens every time I use it. Super annoying because it’s not a cheap product. When I pay that much for a powder I get annoyed when hard pan happens so often and so frequently. Most of my high end powders never get hard pan (especially not my hourglass ones which are my favorite). I don’t know maybe I got a bad one or something when I bought it a few months ago 🤷🏼‍♀️

Reply ButtonReply

Trisha

Oh geeze, I have a Tom Ford blush that does the exact same thing & tape does NOTHING! I snatch a couple disposable mascara wands from Sephora or Nordies & lightly brush the top before I use it.

Reply ButtonReply

Frances W

Could you explain what hard pan means and the “tape method”?

Reply ButtonReply

Monica

I requested the IT Bye Bye Pores pressed powder and I was so happy it was in my bag. I’m going to miss Ipsy letting its subscribers pick out an item every month.

Reply ButtonReply

Brenda

This is my favorite Ipsy bag ever! I got the Luna Elara lipstick (which I’m swapping, not my color) instead of the Rimmel that Liz received and instead of the lid primer, I received the Hey Honey Trick and Treat Cream concealer (more than half of full size and $19.20). Swapping that too since I don’t use concealer so my bag came out to $89.12! That’s the first time it’s been that high and I can’t wait to use the eye cream and the Blaq mask! I would have been happy with loving one item when it’s a full sized eye cream!

Reply ButtonReply

LB

I got the same bag. And to top it off I love the actual bag this month. Just an all around winner for me this go-around!!! I hope I’m not spoiled now…haha.

Reply ButtonReply

Michelle

I’m really want the eye primer and under eye concealer from this month! If anyone wants to swap, I’m attaching my profile to this comment. I have the bye-bye pores powder plus several other pages of items 🙂

temgrad98

I have the items you are looking for. Feel free to take a look!

I love my bag this month 😊 I got :

1. Bye bye pores pressed powder by IT Cosmetics
2. Blaq mask
3. Tarte Lifted mascara
4. SKYN Iceland eye cream
5. Furliss crease blending brush

I can’t wait to get it & try out, well everything lol 😂 my tracking number shows that I should get it tomorrow so fingers crossed 🤞 for that!

de

loved everything in my bag this month!

UD Perversion eyeliner
Tart Lifted sweatproof mascara
Dermelect deep green nail polish
Cute Balms pink macaroon lip balm
MDM Flow liquid lip *it’s like jumbo size*

yes there always things in other bags that I’d have liked too but nothing was a miss for me this month 🙂

Reply ButtonReply

Deanne

I like the bag more than I thought I would. Its got a nice subtle texture and the color is muted enough that it doesn’t seem as cheap as it could. Remember how cheap these actually must be to make plus all the products for $10! I’m happy.

Reply ButtonReply

Frances W

PSA for those interested in the alternate eye cream “skyn ICELAND
Icelandic Relief Eye Cream with Glacial Flower Extract” that was also one of the October products. If you’re an Amazon Prime member, they are offering the comparable sample size for $2.00 on the Prime Samples page. There are actually 35 products to choose from in the Beauty and Grooming category. I also snagged a Vichy serum for $4.00.

Any link to this page? I’ve searched and can’t seem to find it. Sounds interesting!

Reply ButtonReply

Frances W

@Jenny – I’ve sent the link in another post but it might take awhile for it to show up as the MSA admins have to check out the link first. However, if you just go to Amazon’s main page and type in the search box “prime samples” it will take you to the page.

Dana

I had requested the Bye Bye Pores, and it was missing from my bag. 😑 My bag inly had 4 items in it. I’ve emailed Ipsy Support with a photo, and I’m hoping they can fix this. Otherwise, I’m done with Ipsy. Too many lackluster bags lately, and then now this.

Reply ButtonReply

Monica

I had an item missing last month and I emailed them about it. I received a replacement item in about a week.

Reply ButtonReply

Dana

It wasn’t outside the bag.

They emailed me the morning with a tracking number, and it looks like I should have it in about a week. I’m glad they were so quick about fixing this.

Ks

It’s outside the bag. I almost threw it away. Double check the mailer.

Reply ButtonReply

Amy Garner

I almost threw it away too! I thought it was a sales flyer or something. I realized that it was too big to fit in the bag, so they put it outside.

Michelle

Mine was outside the Ipsy bag, inside the bubble mailer. I bet someone just missed that last step for your bag.

We’re 4/5 bag twins, Liz!

Instead of Smashbox I’m getting the UD eyeliner. Still waiting for delivery though.

My bag is lost. It was in MA on the 8th and it had to be here on Tuesday but no info or movement since the 8th and wasn’t here yesterday or today. I live in MA an hour away. I sent them a message and they told me if I don’t see it with in 14 days no weekends then message them then. I need my It Cosmetics darn it!
