A few times a year, ModCloth announces their “Stylish Surprise”, where they sell select mystery items you at a deep discount. We're talking typically pricier pieces for around $10-$20! Stylish Surprise is kind of like the Mystery Bags I would periodically get at the candy store I used to g to as a kid. You choose the category and select the size, but otherwise, you don't know what you will receive until it arrives in the mail; hence the surprise! It can be a bit of a gamble because you can get anything from their wide range of styles and aesthetics, but that is the fun of it all!
Stylish Surprise sell out incredibly fast! I went onto their site a few hours after it was announced and apartment, shoes, and accessories were all sold out at that point. Last time I checked the site, it seems it has ended. July’s lasted over a week, so I am surprised how quickly this one went. The great thing about Stylish Surprise, though, is there always seems to be another one right around the corner.

As with normal Mod Cloth orders, the box comes with an invoice, though it gives you the price you paid for the Stylish Surprise itself; not the original cost of the items you get. I ended up getting a dress, swimsuit, top, and bottoms this time around. I missed shoes this time around again like my last review for Stylish Surprise, but I still got a lot; so I really can’t complain!
ModCloth Stylish Surprise Bottoms: Eunina Mina Mid Rise Cuffed Shortie, Size 3xl - Cost $15; Value $39.99? (similar style by brand found here in straight sizes. I found in alternative plus size style here.)
I think the last time I wore a pair of shorts, aside from bike shorts under dresses and skirts, was in high school. I didn’t feel comfortable in them physically--- THE CHUB RUB STRUGGLE IS REAL! I know all of you bodacious babes know what I am talking about! Shorts can be a painful option, but I have been toying with getting a pair since I got my ChafeZone Chub Rub stick at CurvyCon (it is life changing!). I feel like Modcloth must have read my mind by sending these perfect jorts my way! I was skeptical that these would fit, but I was able to pull them up with ease. These shorts have a nice stretch to them but aren’t too thin or flimsy either. The mid-rise cut is amazing too and hits me in my midsection perfectly! Even though the weather is unseasonably warm this fall, I wanted to style these jean shorts for a cooler weather look with tights and boots (to be featured in my ShoeDazzle review coming soon!). I topped the outfit off with jewelry from Jewelry Subscription box (review coming soon also!), western style belt, and a floppy hat. This witchy look may be my new fall go to!
ModCloth Stylish Surprise Swimsuit by Girlhowdy, Size 3x (Labeled as 26) Cost $15; Value $89.99 (Similar style found here)
Nothing says warm weather like some pastel plaid, am I right? The print reminds me of a tablecloth and makes me want to pack a picnic basket. This swimsuit has a very retro pin-up style with the halter top, ruched sides, and low cut legs. The only negative was that there was no support in the chest. It could have been the stretch fabric or that I may have needed a smaller size. I felt as though I was going to plop out of the top at any minute; which does not make me confident for how my bits will stay in place while prancing about a pool. I opted to show this swimsuit worn as a bodysuit top with my tapered denim jeans, saddle shoes, and mustard yellow and cream cat eye sunglasses for a cutesy Indian Summer look.
Stylish Surprise Top by Hell Bunny, Size 3xl—Cost $15; Value $39.99? (similar style found here.)
Hell Bunny is a brand I rarely can fit myself into. They are notoriously known as a brand to size up in because an XXL may fit more like a 14/16. This top in a 3x actually does fit me due to the stretchy knit cotton fabric. I like the incredibly retro feel of the top; it looks like something that could have been in Wanda from Cry Baby’s closet. I felt compelled to pair this aqua polka dot accented top with saddle shoes and my faux leather skirt for that John Waters movie character look I always aim for. The only issue I have with the top is what I do with most off shoulder tops: my broad shoulders make the top roll. I had to have my photographer (aka my dad) make sure the seam wasn’t exposed a few times. Otherwise, this is a cute top and at the price of fifteen bucks, you can’t beat it!
ModCloth Stylish Surprise Dress by Geode, Size 4x—Cost $20, Value Unkown
I have heard about this phenomenon of commenters receiving wedding dresses in their Stylish Surprise. One even said they got not one wedding dress, but THREE. Well, I apparently am joining this club as well! I had to chuckle upon seeing it in the box initially! This dress is a big pile of tulle on me. I had opted for the 4x since my last Stylish Surprise in a 3x was a bit snug; but this dress is rather oversized on me, sadly. The one thing I really like is the sweetheart neckline, but I do not like the skirt of the dress’s design. The dotted tulle was felt very heavy and itchy. The layering on the skirt did not wow me either. However, getting a wedding dress at $20 is a crazy great deal, regardless of whether I need or want one. Heck, for $20 bucks you could do an Andi from Pretty in Pink and Frankenstein this with another dress if you are tremendously crafty. Go for it! The fabric alone is more than $20! Halloween is right around the corner and this could always be used as a costume as well. For the styling, I was inspired by a mix of Madonna and Tiffany from Bride of Chucky because… why not?!
Verdict: This Stylish Surprise was a real mixed bag! I scored big time with the denim shorts and Hell Bunny top, but the plaid swimsuit and wedding dress were definite low points. Both the swimsuit and the wedding dress were a bit too big for me, and I have no use for a wedding gown at this time. With that being said, for $60 and expedited shipping, I still came out on top! My shorts and the top alone would have been $80, so to get four items for $60 is a real deal. Stylish Surprise is a real roll of the dice at times, but I still find it worth the gamble!
