The Wizards of Once by Cressida Cowell - Retail Value $17.99 (found on sale here for $12.18)
I’ve just started this book and it grabbed me right away. I am finding both main characters Xar and Wish to be multi-faceted and very likeable. Cowell’s writing is humorous and the illustrations are whimsical and creepy at the same time.
From Amazon:
Once there were Wizards, who were Magic, and Warriors, who were not. But Xar, son of the King of Wizards, can't cast a single spell. And Wish, daughter of the Warrior Queen, has a banned magical object of her own. When they collide in the wildwood, on the trail of a deadly witch, it's the start of a grand adventure that just might change the fabric of their worlds.
Author, Cressida Cowell, included a letter to OwlCrate Jr. readers about her inspiration for writing the book, as well as a feather-shaped bookmark and a signed nameplate.
Witchy Zippered Pouch - Estimated Value $8.00?
This black cotton zippered pouch is an OwlCrate Jr. exclusive and it printed with assorted magical symbols and pictures and a Shakespearean inspired quote. It will be perfect for keep pens and pencils together in my work tote.
Harry Potter Pocket Pop Keychain - Retail Value $6.99 (found on sale here for $5.70)
My Harry Potter blind bag keychain was a creepy Dementor. I wish I had received Dumbledore, but I have to say the Dementor sure does fit the dark and creepy theme of this month’s box.
Chococat Pen - Estimated Value $4.00?
I believe this is a Chococat pen. It has an ultra-fine tip for precise writing. I love Chococat and this pen looks adorable in my pen cup at work.
Fizzy Fairy Apothecary Bath Bomb - Estimated Value $5.50?
This Emerald City bath bomb was made exclusively for OwlCrate Jr. It came in a dark green pouch and based on the other bath bombs at the Fizzy Fairy Etsy site is valued at $5.50. The bomb was fizzy and fun and made the water turn a pretty pale green. As a bath lover I always welcome bath bombs in my subscription boxes!
Book of Spells Button - Estimated Value $.50?
Since the premise of this book is magic, the book of spells button was a perfect touch to the box.
NOVEMBER SPOILER ALERT:
The November OwlCrate Jr. theme will be Curses. The fantasy selection will be perfect for fans of Harry Potter and The Land of Stories series.
Verdict: OwlCrate Jr.’s October box was a fun theme and I thought they did a nice job on their curation as usual. Plus I love Cressida Cowell’s new book so far! The retail value this month was $42.98 (over $35 with sales prices), which is higher than the cost of the box ($27.99 a month plus $6.99 shipping). We love receiving OwlCrate Jr. and highly recommend it for middle-grade readers who love fantasy literature.
