Paleo By Maileo is a snack and food box for those who follow the Paleo diet. The Paleo diet, in a nutshell, is high in fat, low in carbohydrates, fruits, and nuts, and excludes grains, legumes, added sugars, and dairy. Of course, it's more complex than that, so I recommend doing your own research if you're interested in trying the Paleo diet.

This card offers a great introduction to the Paleo By Maileo box. Whether subscribers have signed up for this box due to dietary restrictions or simple preferences, it's wonderfully reassuring to have written confirmation that their needs are being met. For me, I don't follow a strict Paleo diet, but I did try it for a spell, and I do still work Paleo recipes into my rotation regularly.
Note: Part of the reason the Paleo diet didn't work for me was because of the sheer volume of meat that tends to go along with it. I do eat and enjoy meat—preferably local and/or grass-fed, which is consistent with the Paleo guidelines—but I'm a real veggie-lover, so it feels more natural and satisfying for me for plants to make up a larger part of my diet. For the sake of a range of opinions and a fair review, I asked my husband, Guy, to join me in trying all the food items in this box. He is passionate about any and all foods, so he was happy to oblige.
bRAW Chocolate Espresso Superfood Bar, 1.8 oz — Value $3.99
My heart smiled when I saw the hand-written note on this bar! While the back of the packaging does clearly state that this snack should be refrigerated, I probably wouldn't have caught that direction until after I had already explored the rest of the snacks in the box. The fact that Paleo By Maileo's team thought to include the reminder just goes to show the attention and care that's put into this subscription.
When we opened the bRAW bar's packaging, a blissful, comforting coffee shop smell took over our senses! Espresso and chocolate are an undeniably awesome combo, and they taste delicious in raw bar form. The nuts, seeds, and dried fruit mingling throughout this snack made for a great texture, and I definitely felt a little caffeine boost after eating it. We found the flavor to be pretty rich, so we ate a few bites here and there rather than the whole thing all at once. The only thing holding it back from tasting too indulgent is that it definitely has that "raw" flavor, which it is, so that's fitting.
EPIC Venison Sea Salt Pepper Bar, 1.5 oz — Value $2.89
I love this jerky's packaging design. For me, that's part of the experience and great design totally adds to my enjoyment of products!
We're a little stumped over what "grass-fed venison" means—in our minds, the main draw of eating venison is the guarantee of purity that comes along with wild game, but perhaps this snack was made from farm-raised deer...which, to us, defeats the purpose of having venison. Either way, this jerky bar was delicious. Compared to classic beef jerky, it was a little less greasy and maybe a hint drier (but not in a bad way). It was highly seasoned, so ultimately it didn't taste hugely dissimilar to other types of jerky.
Heavenly Organics Mint Chocolate Honey Patties, 3-pack — Value $1.69
Heavenly Organics Pomegranate Chocolate Honey Patties, 3-pack — Value $1.69
We are among the chosen humans on this earth who have a sweet tooth that just won't quit. The thing is, I love rich, yet complex flavors—you know, the luxurious stuff. It's a curse. These Heavenly Organics patties, on the other hand, are not in any way, shape, or form a curse. They are divine! They're made of three ingredients: 100% cocoa, raw white honey, and natural flavoring.
Guy and I are at odds over whether the mint or the pomegranate version of these patties is better, which actually is a wonderful problem to have—we each get to indulge in our favorite without competition! I vote mint because it has such a full flavor, while he prefers the subtle fruitiness of the pomegranate one. Note that 100% cocoa has a pretty intense bitterness, so while these treats are plenty sweet thanks to their honey filling, they do leave a lingering dark chocolate taste in your mouth. Perfect for folks like us who seek out high percentages of cacao in their chocolate; probably awful for those who prefer sweeter chocolate.
Wild Zora Chili Beef Meat & Veggie Bar, 1.1oz — Value $2.99
This is a cool concept! I've never heard of jerky that has veggies mixed in, but now I feel like I've been missing out. This one includes grass-fed beef, kale, cayenne, and apricot. To me, it smells and tastes like fresh salsa, which is only ever a good thing. To Guy, it tastes like pizza. Also a good thing. A spike of spiciness kicks in late in the game, which adds a nice surprise. Above, I had mentioned that the venison jerky seemed less greasy than your average beef jerky, but this Wild Zora was a pleasant surprise in its lack of greasiness. We were pretty taken by this snack! Two thumbs up.
SeaSnax Original Organic Seaweed Snack, 0.36 oz — Value $2.39
One thing my diet excludes is any and all seafood. It's just not for me. Guy loves seafood and has enjoyed seaweed as a snack before. These organic seaweed sheets were roasted in olive oil and sprinkled with salt. The whole thing is definitely an oily affair, so watch what you're wearing and where you're setting the plastic tray when you dig in.
I assumed seaweed was eaten delicate sheet by delicate sheet, but Guy pinched about five between his fingers and crunched them all in his mouth at once. His feedback: "Tastes just like seaweed should taste," which I learned means fishy, crispy, and easily dissolved. He described a "shrinking sensation" when the seaweed hit his tongue, which apparently is something he seeks in seaweed. I'm just fascinated by the whole affair and I can't help but wonder: does seaweed taste fishy because it's been brushing up against fish? One of life's great unanswered questions.
Jackson's Honest Sweet Potato Chips, 1.2 oz — Value $1.39
Now's my chance to shine, because let me tell you, I'm a root veggie chip fanatic! These sweet potato chips were made with coconut oil, which is perfect for the Paleo diet.
They didn't have the same crunch that some root veggie chips do, maybe because they are a bit heavy on the coconut oil, but they are every bit delicious and this bag was gone in 30 seconds. I would certainly buy this brand again!
Sunfood Superfoods Raw Organic Coconut Wraps, 7 ct. — Value $12.99
Coconut water drinkers or eaters of raw coconut will be very familiar with the flavor of these wraps. They're meant to be used as a gluten-free, low-carb alternative to bread or tortillas, but can also be used as crepes, sushi wraps, and more.
The consistency is kind of waxy and chewy at the same time and it sort of sticks in your teeth. But it's really good and interesting tasting—if you like raw coconut, that is. I've found it to be an acquired taste, but in wrap form, I can see it going well with spicy things or teriyaki sauce. I can't wait to explore the possibilities with these healthy wraps!
Verdict: I'm extremely impressed with the Paleo By Maileo subscription. I found it to be more than just a food box; it was a whole experience! The great quality, commitment to the diet and cause, and personal touches like a hand-signed intro card and refrigeration note all added value to the box for me. Cost-wise, the individual items in this box didn't quite add up to the $39 cost of the subscription (I calculated about $30 or an average of $3.75 per item), but I honestly didn't bat a lash at that because of how much time and effort the subscription saves folks from finding and shopping for these specialized, high-quality products. And, remember, the $39 price tag includes shipping. Overall, this subscription is great value in my opinion and a shining example of how sub boxes should be done!
