Spirograph Deluxe Set - Retail Value $24.99

I seriously feel like Target is curating this box lately just to play on my nostalgia. Spirograph was one of my favorite toys as a child, so I was super excited when I saw the kit this month!

Target Arts and Crafts October 2017 - Carrying case

This deluxe kit comes in a very organized and re-usable carrying case.

Everything fits neatly inside, including standard sheets of 8.5" x 11" paper. This side of the case is also a work surface, which they recommend using so you don't damage your tabletops. (Insert rejoicing parent emoticon here)

So many shapes and sizes to play with! I had a huge smile on my face when I opened this up.

Target Arts and Crafts October 2017 - Paper

The kit comes with a handful of standard printer paper; nothing too special, but this means the kit is ready-to-go out of the box.

Target Arts and Crafts October 2017 - Spirograph sticky tack

This seems like a more recent addition: a bit of sticky tack (dubbed "Spiro-Putty") that you can use to hold the big rings and lines down on the paper, while you draw with the wheels.

The kit also comes with three pens: green, red, and blue.

Target Arts and Crafts October 2017 - Spirograph instructions

Thinking back to my childhood, I'm pretty sure I never intentionally tried to make a specific design with this toy. I remember just randomly picking rings and wheels and being delighted at the colorful shapes that would appear.

This kit though contains a 14-page manual that explains in detail how different designs can be achieved:

These instructions will tell you which ring size, wheel size, color pen, and numbered hole to use to recreate each design.

I have to admit - I jumped right in without reading the manual. I was too excited!

I also didn't realize what the putty was for yet, so I held the ring with my hand while I used the pen and wheel to create a design.

For my first Spirograph doodle in probably 20 years, not bad!

I did try using the putty for a quick sketch using the "rack" piece, and it worked pretty well except for one spot where my wheel slipped underneath.

Once again, we have a fun project that is great for elementary aged kits (the age range for this box is 6-10). This is one of those toys that is great for rainy days, taking along on family vacation, or easy entertainment in the evening before bed. What I particularly like about this selection is that since it's not project based, you can continue to use it for as long as your child's interest is there– just add more paper! While my toddler is too young to share in my joy this month, I'm definitely stashing this away for us to play with together in the future.

Verdict: I was personally really pleased with our Target Art & Craft Kit Subscription this month! This month was a good overall value: we saved $10 by subscribing for $14.99 compared to buying this specific toy for $24.99.

For this subscription overall, the kits you receive will range in price from roughly $14.99 - $30 depending on the selections. I enjoy the surprise and convenience of having something new to share with my kid without having to overthink it; it usually makes for a fun and memorable evening of creativity. There is always a bit of a risk that a given selection won't be a home run with your kid, depending on their interests, so definitely keep that in mind and check out our past reviews to see what other types of items we've received before you sign up.

I was so excited to sign my daughter up after seeing this! I wanted one! However we got Fashion Plates. Still takes me back to my childhood, but I was a tad bit disappointed!

I want one too!! It brings back wonderful memories. We had different colored push pins with big heads on them to keep the “track” down on the paper.

… spirograph was hands-down one of my favorite things as a kid-and, back in my day, there was none of this “putty” stuff–it was in the instructions to use straight pins to hold the various wheels and such to the paper…i remember this vividly

of course, i grew up with no seatbelts, lawn darts, & real trick-or-treating…

…and survived…

And now I want a spirograph. But my kid is only 3 so I can’t pretend like it’s for him.

Eeek! I had a Spirograph set when I was a kid too. I can’t believe it’s still around!
