A detailed newsletter is included each month where you can read about the two featured breweries and the beer that you will find in your box. I love reading the stories behind each brewery and learning more about how they make each beer. This month, we will dive into tasting beers from O'so Brewing Company located in Plover, Wisconsin and SweetWater Brewing Company located in Atlanta.
The first beer we will try this month comes from O'so Brewing. Founded in 2007 by husband and wife, Marc and Katina Buttera, O'so has become one of the fastest growing breweries in Wisconsin. Their mission is to "promote a ton of great Wisconsin beer" which means you can find 40 beers on tap at their brewery, 20 to 25 of their own and then the rest are beers featured in the Wisconsin Brewers Guild.
The Hop Whoopin' is a single malt with all sorts of hops and bitterness, 95 IBUs to be exact! You really get a strong floral and spicy notes as you enjoy this beer. You will notice that when poured there is a sticky white foam at the top that you can really taste but in a good way! I love a hoppy beer so I can safely say that this was my favorite of the month, but with 7% alcohol, I will have to watch myself with this one!
The second beer from O'so Brewing is the Hopdinger, coming in with 5.4% alcohol levels and 49 IBUs. Like any good pale ale, you really get a bold copper flavor and lots of head foam. The flavors are so rich and bold, I was picking up the copper, pine, and hints of fruit. There is a mild bitterness but overall this is very easy to drink and enjoy! I could see this pairing nicely at a cookout in the fall with some pulled pork, yummy!
Our second brewery of the month is SweetWater Brewing Company. Two roommates met at the University of Colorado, Boulder and knew that brewing was the way to go! In 1996, after graduating from brewing school at UC Davis, they set their sites on opening a brewery in Atlanta. Flash forward to 2012, they had to expand their brewery after their old brewhouse was in a near continuous operation time. You can find new features in their Atlanta location like their largest privately owned solar array, capable of generating 157 KwH of clean electricity, as well as top-of-the-line computerized brewing equipment.
The first featured beer from SweetWater Brewing is their Georgia Brown, a 5.8% alcohol level brew with 30 IBUs. I would say that this isn't as thick as other brown ale beers I have tried. You will get a lot of different flavors in each sip from caramel to coffee, to burnt toast, to a somewhat nutty flavor. This brew is perfect for the cooler weather and they note that it would pair nicely with various cheeses! While I am not normally a fan of brown ales, I did really enjoy this Georgia Brown!
The second beer from SweetWater Brewing is their 420 Extra Pale Ale, which was brewed for the first time on 4/20/97. I really loved this brew because you don't get a ton of bitterness, but it still has hints of tasting like an IPA. It was light and easy to drink with 5.4% alcohol and 39 IBUs. I got a lot of fruity flavors mixed with some rich caramel tones. A really wonderful beer!
Now that we are done tasting, here is a view of all the beers to see the difference in each! From left to right: 420, Hopdinger, Hop Whoopin', Georgia Brown.
Verdict: This month's Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club was probably my favorite so far! I love a beer with lots of hops and this was abundant in the majority of beers featured. While I have had beers from SweetWater Brewing before, I had no idea what their history was! O'so Brewing was one that I have never heard of, but I will absolutely be buying more from them. So while this box is a higher price item at $42.95 a month, with 12 beers in each box you are able to have a really fun taste testing party with your friends or family each month! We have some out of town guests staying with us this weekend, and it was great that we already had some beer on hand from this month's Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club and the information newsletter to help them navigate each brew!
