The October ZEN BOX includes Zen Elemi Essential Oil, Zen Fennel Seed Essential Oil and Zen Eucalyptus Essential Oil.
As of January 2017, this box switched from being monthly to bi-monthly. This provides plenty of time for essential oils-lovers to truly take their time with their new oils, learning about each's properties and incorporating its use into their lives. According to the Zen Box info emails, essential oils' shelf life is about 1.5-2 years depending on storage conditions, so the bi-monthly delivery also allows subscribers the opportunity to use their new oils without being bombarded by a new batch too soon!
The information on each product and how to use it is sent as a link to a PDF document which you can see by clicking on this link. The information ZEN BOX sends is useful and provides the source and production information for their oils—one of the telltale signs of pure, high-quality oils. The downside is that it is a lot of material to digest and can be overwhelming. I just skimmed the email to start, and I plan to revisit it throughout the next 2 months.
Zen Elemi Essential Oil – Value $13.99?
I had never heard of Elemi essential oil, but after doing a little research, I can't believe I made it this long without it! Its most standout property is as a protectant against any and every infection. That means it works to prevent infections related to everything from bacteria, fungi, and viruses to urinary, intestinal, stomach, and kidney-related issues. And that's just a few examples! It's also commonly used as an analgesic—and one without side effects at that. Sounds like kind of the miracle oil, doesn't it?
ZEN BOX has a habit of being late with adding the oils in their box to their website. You should be able to find this one sometime in October!
Zen Fennel Seed Essential Oil – Value $12.99
You've probably eaten fennel seeds, especially if you like Indian cuisine or Chinese food. They taste kind of like a mix between cumin and anise, and the aroma of fennel seed essential oil is consistent with its flavor. Anise isn't for everyone, and while I'm not hugely fond of the taste, I do like the scent quite a bit!
The ZEN BOX information says Fennel Seed essential oil touts the following qualities:
- Digestive support
- Reduces menstrual and muscular cramps
- Reduces fatigue
- Anti-spasmodic (helps calm coughs)
- Anti-bacterial
Zen Eucalyptus Essential Oil – Value $12.99
Eucalyptus oil is one I know and love. It's got a vaguely minty, somewhat honey-ish scent for those unfamiliar. I've used blended it with apple cider vinegar, tea tree oil, and water to make natural bug repellant and also put a few drops in my wool dryer balls to infuse my laundry with a nice smell.
The ZEN BOX information says Fennel Seed essential oil touts the following qualities:
- Antibacterial
- Antifungal
- Respiratory health
Here's a peek at what the oils look like under their lid. It allows for easy dropping, so that your oil doesn't gush out.
Verdict: I give ZEN BOX two thumbs up. It's obvious that the founder, Kathy, has a true passion and a deep knowledge of essential oils, evident by the nicely curated experience. The information provided about each oil is super useful, and while it's a little intimidating at first, I look forward to checking back in with it as I work these oils into my daily life. I appreciate that it arrives via email rather than on a sheet of paper; this way I can't lose it! As for the cost value, there's no question in my mind that the $32.99 cost of the ZEN BOX is a worthwhile investment for essential oils lovers. Purchasing the three oils a la carte would cost about $40, and they wouldn't include all the useful information that comes as part of the box's accompanying info.
Here's a useful note from Shawn, MSA's previous reviewer of the ZEN BOX:
These oils are not the cheapest you can find but remember that it’s important to buy essential oils from a reputable supplier since they are not regulated. Many cheaper oils are cut with other oils and are not be pure and the prices of these oils are on par with the high-quality retailers I’m familiar with. ZEN BOX says their oils are 100% pure therapeutic quality and are gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC/MS) tested, which is the way essential oils are tested for purity. The tests are conducted by Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS), a multinational company providing inspection, verification, testing and certification services. I requested to see one of the GC/MS reports and ZEN BOX sent it to me the same day. I’m certainly no expert but at this point, I feel comfortable purchasing oils from ZEN BOX.
