Staten Italy: Nothin' but the Best Italian-American Classics, from Our Block to Yours by Francis Garcia and Sal Basille – Retail Value $28.00 (found here for $14.95)
This cookbook is fabulous! It is filled with funny stories and loving tributes to New York and the author’s families. Garcia and Basille have restaurants called Artichoke Pizza, a frozen pizza line and host a show on the Cooking Channel called Pizza Masters. I enjoy reading cookbooks, not just cooking from them, and this is one I’ve been enjoying from cover to cover. The recipes look fabulous and cover so many things from appetizers to pastas, sauces, meats, seafood and more. There are many that I’ve already flagged to try. As someone who lives and grew up in the New Jersey area, this heart Italian food is something I grew up eating and always enjoy.
Fried Chicken: Recipes for the Crispy, Crunchy, Comfort-Food Classic by Rebecca Lang - Retail Value $16.99 (found here for $15.66)
I prefer my cookbooks to have lots of photographs and this one does which is great. And while fried chicken sure is a delicious food, I can’t say this is something I ever see myself making at home. In September I received a donut cookbook from BookCase.Club and felt the same way. That this is a food I may eat once in a while as an unhealthy splurge food, but not something I want to make at home and definitely don’t need a whole book devoted to variations. I will pass this along to some deep-frying chicken lover (and if I’m lucky they’ll let me be their Guinea pig).
Verdict: The retail value of BookCase.Club this month was about $45 ($30.61 using Amazon prices) which is triple the cost of the box ($9.99 a month plus $5 shipping)! I am very happy with the value and both selections this month. As someone who loves to discover new recipes and also just enjoys perusing cookbooks for inspiration I think this is a subscription that’s great for me personally. I can’t wait to see what they send next month. I would definitely like to see some cookbooks that focus on healthier eating, maybe even vegetarian and not so many selections focused on one type of food which feels too specific to me.
