December 2017 Loot Crate Review

The December Loot Crate featured items from 3 franchises and a mystery item from previous deliveries of Loot Anime, Marvel Gear + Goods, Loot Gaming, and more.

The first thing of note is that the box does not invert into anything special anymore - this used to be one of the special little extras that it felt they put a lot of time and thought into - this is just one of a few cuts from what we're used to receiving.

The second shift - there's no more booklet!

Instead, it's a simple card with information. Instead, you're offered a digital version of the magazine - for me, that's not a like-for-like trade-off, it just feels like a cost-cutting maneuver.

Explore Pin - Value $5?

One thing that hasn't changed is that you'll get a pin to accompany the theme. This month's pin is a rocket ship.

This month's digital bonus loot is a 3-month subscription to Pandora Premium.

Destiny 2 Shirt - Value $15?

This month's exclusive shirt features Destiny 2.

The design looks like a Wanderwing wing from the game - but, I've only played the original Destiny, so let me know if I'm off on this one.

ROBOTECH LED Light - Value $20? - Previously Seen in the December 2016 Loot Anime

This was my biggest gripe of the month. The spoilers hinted at a mystery franchise, what they didn't say was that it'd be a past item from old loot crate lines - that's a big deal for someone who has multiple subscriptions - and would have been a big reason to pause.

The card notes that you can receive a mystery item from previous Loot Gaming, Loot Anime, Marvel Gear + Goods, and more. Mine came from Loot Anime.

This lamp clips into place and allows for three color options:

Red.

Blue.

And Green.

The item itself is pretty neat. But, as someone who doesn't closely follow any anime, it's not something I'd seek out and hope for in the core crate.

Exclusive Star Wars Graphic Novel - Value $10-15?

This graphic novel is entirely exclusive to Loot Crate, as far as I can tell - it might be one of those exclusives that is just an early release, though.

It brings together past and present characters in a short story surrounding a downed Star Destroyer that Rey is scavenging. Star Wars comics definitely add a little bit of extra life to the Star Wars universe, so if you're in need of more content - look for Star Wars comics and the animated series - they're both great.

Guardians of the Galaxy Mini Calendar - Value $8

The final item is a 16-month calendar for 2018.

This is noted as a 'Loot Crate Edition' of the calendar, but I'm not entirely sure what separates it from the normal edition apart from the cover - it might be that the normal one isn't a mini-edition? I'm not entirely sure.

Verdict: Loot Crate's highlight item for me has been the little vinyl figures and statues, so to see that replaced with an old item (and possible duplicate item) AND a price increase is a major letdown. To top it off, the boxes were also late and did not arrive in time for most holidays. Loot Crate has just been dropping the ball with shipping lately, and for it to now be seeking its way into what goes in the box, well that's a major concern for me - I was always ok with getting it late as long as the items were great. This month was a letdown.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, You'll see the current them on the landing page - theme cutoffs are the 19th of each month at midnight EST.

COUPON - Save 10% off any length subscription, or $3 off month-to-month with coupon code ADDICTION or SAVE3

Hello, maybe you can help me since Loot Crate customer service is not helpful. My 13-year old received a 3-month Loot Crate subscription as a gift. The first box arrived and it had a free Loot pin gift of Pandora for a couple of months. To unlock it we need his account number. Since it was a gift I don’t have a number (I don’t think anyway). When I emailed LootCrate about this, the response I got (after several weeks) was this:
“We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. However the free Loot Pin bonus is not available in your Country. Please let me know if any further assistance is needed. ” We live in the continental U.S. so this seems a strange response.

Is this true? Any ideas on how I can actually talk to a real person at LootCrate with questions? Thanks

Wow… December was a total letdown! Time to cancel my subscription… I can get an awesome nerd t-shirt for $5 so the rest of my subscription cost is for trinkets and trash. I was really disappointed with November but was hoping December would be better. How can you screw up Star Wars????? Well ladies and gents, apparently the answer is either Jar Jar Binks or Loot Crate.

Worst box ever coming from a two year subscriber. Blugh. Thinking about trying Geek Fuel instead..

I have yet to receive my December Crate, this was not the first issue I have had. The customer service is seriously lacing in the service area, they do nothing but apologize for the inconvenience but do nothing about it. waiting for over three months for crates to be shipped out because “they oversold,” “shipping error,” or just flat out don’t respond. With the current trends of loot in the crates, and the dropping quality of the crates, flimsy t-shirts that don’t last very long or undersized and wouldn’t fit my child, trinkets that aren’t worth much with little to no collector value, etc. and now the almost doubling of the shipping costs, when they don’t know how to ship out on time anyway.

I see a failing company in the near future.

I am very disappointed in December’s loot crate. The T-Shirt is Ok … even though I have no idea what the franchise is (not a gamer). The calendar is a joke. I love GOTG but I can get one at the mall for a few bucks. The mystery item I got was a three inch tiny anime figure (not Gundam). The box was damaged. I have better stuff in my kitchen junk drawer. The Robotech light is much nicer. I would have liked that.
The box and booklet changes don’t bode well for Loot Crate.

I agree with others who posted their concerns over cash flow and Loot Crate. Fingers crossed that we all get our stuff and it’s decent.

I got some sort of Rocket Racoon and Groot figure, but I also would have preferred the light. I feel that they used this box to try and empty out their warehouse.

Bungie makes it, Activision pays to call the shots… The game is called Destiny (now there’s a Destiny 2 out).

I got a Halo “Screen Shot” icon figure. Not into Halo but it looks like some sort of gorilla???

Cameron

its a Brute. its a type of enemy inside the game of Halo.

I would have liked that light. But I got a bloody chainsaw usb instead. WTF.

That light would be so cool in a window during the holidays- unlike any other decorations!

I was a McDonalds Happy Meal Collector for many years. So, I noticed that the final promotion at the end of each years was a mystery prize with every meal. Obviously this was done so the restaurants could unload some of their old inventory.

Loot Crate is doing the same thing. Dumping their old inventory at the end of the year.

I have been a Loot Crate subscriber for many years. I am now done.

And they’ve started putting past items in their boxes? It feels like they are following nerd blocks footsteps…. I won’t be committing to a long term subscription again.

Well I don’t know what show that robot is from but it is way better than what I got- a tiny plastic gun from gears of war 4. Surely they can find a better way to get rid of old junk. I cancelled but I’m concerned I may not even get my remaining boxes because judging by this box I would say they are having cash flow issues.

I’ve not gotten mine yet, but it does look like it will be a letdown. I’ve never played Destiny, I’ll probably give the calendar away so I’ve basically got the comic and pin to look forward to.
I have seen that some people have gotten Gundam figures in their crates and I’m hoping that I’ll get one of those, because I do love Gundam.

aaaaaand, I’ve officially cancelled. My God this box went downhill fast!

I was monitoring the LootCrate posts on Twitter while subscribers/former subscribers were trying to get info from LootCrate about the fraudulent charges placed on their accounts for past boxes.

So many people are angry about this box.

Does it really cost $9 to ship this box? I’ve weighed past boxes and looked up the shipping and it was about $4.

Reply ButtonReply

Mike

Maybe $4 for Media Mail, but for Standard/Priority Mail once you’re over 1 lb you’re looking at $7-11 for shipping.
