Love With Food Gluten Free December 2017 Review
December’s theme is “Share the Love.” Love with Food is featuring Christine Ha, who goes by The Blind Cook, and is the MasterChef Season 3 Winner. They’re promoting her cookbook!
This box was stuffed with coupons from Hello Fresh, Allure Beauty Box, Naked Wines, and so much more!
Okay, let's jump into the snacks. I also reviewed this month's Love With Food Tasting Box, and there were some repeat snacks between that box and this one. I'll note which ones those are throughout my review.
Blue Diamond Hint of Sea Salt Mini Nut-Thins, 0.74oz. – Buy a pack of 6 4.4 oz bags for $4.99
These wheat and gluten-free almond and rice crackers are my everything! I keep a similar cracker from Trader Joe’s in my pantry 100% of the time, and eating a few is a highlight of my day, every day! These Blue Diamond ones are even crunchier than the ones I keep on stock, and I wish this little bag would last forever! The flavor isn’t too nutty, it’s almost similar to a rice cake, but with a much better consistency. So yummy dipped in hummus, with a slice of sharp cheddar cheese on top! This snack was also included in this month's Love With Food Tasting Box.
Beanitos Original Black Bean Chips, 1.2 oz. – Buy a 24-pack for $23.92
Are chips and salsa the perfect snack or what? I don’t indulge in ’em all that often, but I would way more if I had a steady stream of these black bean chips on supply. Often times, chips that broadcast themselves as being made with an alternative, healthier ingredient still feature the one you’re trying to avoid at the top of the list. Not the case here! This gluten-free, non-GMO snack’s ingredients include black beans, sunflower oil, long grain rice, and sea salt. And, with 1 bag equaling 1 serving size, it’s awesome to be able to munch away with reckless abandon and not have to worry about going overboard! Flavor-wise, these chips don’t taste like beans at all; they’re pretty similar to a classic tortilla chip, but maybe a bit duller. Consistency-wise, they’re just as crunchy as they should be!
Fruigees 24 Carrot Orange Organic Fruit Snack, 3.5 oz. - Retail Value $2.29 (found on sale here for $1.89)
The market near where I work used to have a juice stand, and I would purchase carrot lemon orange juice on the reg. It's since closed down, but this applesauce-inspired fruit snack has a really similar flavor, and it's so refreshing! Very light and sweet and delicious. I recommend massaging the pouch before digging in, lest your snacking experience is introduced by runny juices like mine was (still yummy, though!).
Bakery on Main Cranberry Almond Maple Gluten-Free Granola, 1.1oz – Retail Value $1.29
This granola is like a cross between corn flakes and trail mix. It’s awesome that it’s gluten-free, but it’s so sweet that I had a hard time convincing myself that I was snacking on something healthy. I would love it if this mix relied on the craisins for sweetness, but instead, it’s all topped with a sugary coating that gives it a sort of artificial flavor. This snack was also included in this month's Love With Food Tasting Box...it wasn't my favorite in that box, and again it isn't here.
Pepper Jack Moon Cheese, 0.75 oz. - Buy a 2 oz. bag for $4.99
Strange as it may sound, I'm an experienced Moon Cheese eater, and as a cheese-lover, I can say these are awesome. They're sort of like a dense cracker with a nice crunch to them, but they aren't a cracker! They're cheese! My first time trying these was on a backpacking trip and they were a nice salty boost for the trek. Love 'em!
Pop Art Thai Coconut Curry Popcorn, 1.25 oz. - Retail Value $4.50
As much as I love the idea of popcorn, I truly can't stand the kernels and shells getting stuck in my teeth, so I only took a few bites of this snack. But, what I ate, I liked! The flavoring is subtle and cumin-ish. The popcorn itself is pretty standard, but not too greasy, which is nice. This would be a good snack to put out in a bowl if friends were coming over!
Munk Pack Coconut White Chocolate Macadamia Protein Cookie, 2.96 oz. – Retail Value $2.79
I’ve now had two Munk Pack Protein cookies once and it's safe to say this is one of my favorite snacks to receive. This peanut butter chocolate chip flavor is currently ranked at second place for me, right between double chocolate and coconut white chip macadamia. Things I love about this cookie: it’s non-GMO, gluten-free, and vegan. I also love that it’s got a very soft, almost cake-like consistency to it, and somehow lacks that not-so-great protein powder aftertaste that prevents many-a-granola-bar from being epic. A drawback is that it has 18g of sugar in it, which to me seems like a ton for a health food snack, even if it is a cookie. Serving size is half the cookie, but to me, Munk Pack has high expectations of their consumers in thinking they’ll stop eating this delicious snack halfway through! A different flavor of this snack was also included in this month's Love With Food Tasting Box.
RXBAR Kids in Berry Blast, 1.96 oz. - Buy a box of 16 bags for $24.99
RXBAR Kids in Apple Cinnamon Raisin, 1.96 oz. - Buy a box of 16 bags for $24.99
I’ve seen RXBARs at Trader Joe’s before but never taken the leap to check out what they’re all about until they came in another snack subscription box recently. I love that the ingredients are listed out clearly on the front of the package, so there are no hidden surprises. I think the only thing that makes these two kiddo-themed is that they're a little smaller than the usual bar, and they have more bright, fun packaging! Taste-wise, they're pretty much exactly what I would expect—fruity, nutty, chewy, and good!
Annie Chun's Sea Salt Organic Seaweed Snacks 0.35 oz. - Buy a pack of 12 for $18.99
One thing my diet excludes is any and all seafood. It’s just not for me. My husband loves seafood and has enjoyed seaweed as a snack before. These organic seaweed sheets were roasted in olive oil and sprinkled with salt. He said the flavor is fishy, crispy, and easily dissolved on the tongue.
Nothing But The Fruit Mixed Berry Real Fruit Bites, 0.9 oz. – Buy a pack of 5 for $4.99
Nothing But The Fruit Strawberry Real Fruit Bites, 0.9 oz. – Buy a pack of 5 for $4.99
These little guys are so good. They taste like little bits of jam! They’re small and soft enough that you can pop a few in your mouth at a time and experience a nice boost of sweetness without having to worry too much about your chompers getting stuck together. I’m not huge on gummy candy because of the way it gets stuck in my teeth, and while these aren’t technically candy, they have a similar effect. So, I could only eat a few at a time, but they’re good to have on hand for fueling workouts! These guys are non-GMO, gluten-free, and vegan. They were also included in this month's Love With Food Tasting Box.
Verdict: Having already experienced and enjoyed many of these snacks in the Love With Food Tasting Box, I had a preview of what I was getting into. It was a good selection! The new-to-me snacks were unique and fun to explore, and I don't believe any of these options sacrificing flavor or quality to achieve gluten-free status.
