My First Reading Club December 2017 "Just Starting Out" Review
Each box arrives with an info sheet that features a quote from a respected author. Note: all of my boxes thus far have been packed by good ol' Frogger. 🙂
This month also comes with a note from Santa. Super cute for the little ones as you open your box up together!
Onto the books:
Blaze and the Monster Machines: 1 2 3 Blaze! - Retail Value $6.99 (found here for $4.71)
I'm not familiar with the Blaze and the Monster Machines series, but it appears to be a tv show. A lot of the books in this box are Disney or Nickelodeon-affiliated (as this one is), and I can't say that I love that association. However, I do like that this book has simple, learn-to-count text and bright, animated imagery. I think my son will love the idea of monster trucks with faces when he gets to the 2-year-old range!
Go to Sleepy, Little Sheepy - Retail Value $7.99 (found here for $6.98)
This rhyme-y board book is perfect for bedtime. I read it in a sing-song-y sort of voice for my infant, and he actually seemed to be pretty calmed by it. I love that it has a tactile component with the soft hat. Super cute!
Doc McStuffins Doc on Call Boxed Set - Retail Value $10.99
I did a little digging to get some background info on what this Disney show is all about: "Dottie "Doc" McStuffins is a nurturing 6-year-old girl who cares for stuffed animals and toys in her playhouse clinic. When she puts on her stethoscope, something magical happens -- toys, dolls and stuffed animals come to life and she can communicate with them." Love the premise, and it's carried through to each of the 4 books in this series. These would be great for little ones that are scared to get their shots or are apprehensive about doctors visits in general. I remember how scary it was for me at times! These books would certainly have helped ease my worries. The illustrations are vibrant, and I also love that this set comes in a little box so that you can tote it around with you.
Tommy Bahama Body Cream - Buy a pack of 8 1.1 oz bottles for $15.00
If you've read a few of my My First Reading Club reviews, you'll know that I'm a little thrown off by these 'mom gift' product samples that are included in each shipment. However, this is probably my favorite one so far. The body cream is rich and luxurious feeling! It's also cool that this one was mentioned in the Santa note -- makes it feel a bit more intentional or something.
Verdict: This is my fourth box from My First Reading Club. So far, I'm really loving my assortments each month! This month's shipment also included a box set of 4 books making a total of 6 books for the month. My only real qualm with My First Reading Club is that it would be nice if they sent the occasional book that wasn't affiliated with Disney or Nickelodeon. It's becoming apparent that this subscription has a partnership of sorts with a certain set of publishers and most books are associated with movies or tv shows.
The value of this month's books comes in at $25.97 (a bit lower than last month's $26.59, but still a great value). With a subscription cost of $9.99 + $5 shipping, I'd say that this box is a pretty terrific value for avid young readers that want to build their library on a monthly basis. That is if you don't mind lots of Nickelodeon and Disney books.
To Wrap Up:
