Doodle Crate December 2017 Review

doodle crate clay sculpture december 2017 booklet cover

This month's project is making a handcrafted sculpture! The skill focus is wire armature and clay sculpting. My nine-year-old son usually does these projects, but this month I had the opportunity to share this box with my 16-year-old niece! Fun! This is the booklet that came in our box this month.

Here's a peek inside the booklet at the instructions. They were clear and well illustrated, so they were easy for my niece to follow. The booklet also always contains good tips and suggestions for practicing.

These are all the supplies that were included for this month's project. Everything we needed was included except scissors, water, and paper towels.

The first step was to create the wire armature. The supplies included a variety of thick and thin wire, so my niece just formed them into the shape she wanted, and anchored it to the cork base that was provided.

She then used the clay, water, and sculpting tools to form the clay around the armature into the shape she wanted.

She had to let the clay dry overnight. The next morning, she painted the sculpture and then let that dry.

Her last step was to use tissue and glue to create little leaves and hanging moss.

This is my niece's completed sculpture! It turned out so beautiful! I am really proud of her.

The Verdict: Doodle Crate is SO awesome! It was really interesting this month to see what happened if I sat back and let a 16-year-old girl do the craft unassisted. She did great! She had absolutely no questions and was able to do it all totally unassisted. I expected as much. I still can't believe what Doodle Crate can provide for $20. When you consider the materials, the curation, the project selection and instructions, that's really a bargain!

My 11 year old has been getting Doodle Crate and Tinker Crate Monthly for over a year. She does both completely unassisted and while she likes Tinker, she LOVES Doodle! Every month is something new for her artist side to discover and we see her continue to grow in her abilities and confidence.
