Gold Medal Wine Club December 2017 Review
My box arrived with lots of supplemental information. First, I received this personalized welcome card and information about membership discounts and rewards.
Next, I received this booklet that goes over each of the wine clubs in more detail, pricing, and how wines are selected. Super helpful if you want to purchase this as a gift for someone!
I also received a copy of “The Wine Press,” which provides in-depth info about the month’s wines and some information about the winemakers behind them. There is even a food pairings and recipe section that goes over what to pair each wine with. This booklet is so detailed and a helpful tool to navigate each wine and to learn more about the overall winemaking process.
Time to taste the wine!
Kenneth Volk 2012 Touriga Nacional California - Retail Value $30 (Buy here for $22)
I am a huge fan of red wines and always love taste testing new blends that I wouldn't normally buy on my own. Touriga Nacional is a Portuguese style wine that isn't well known in the U.S. According to the monthly booklet, "several new vineyard plantings have popped up in recent years across California's diverse growing regions." This blend is so unique to me featuring fruit from Paso Robles and Lodi, ripe plum, culinary sage, and lavender. I really got the hints of lavender every few sips but mainly when I first opened the bottle to breathe. You also get a tartness from the boysenberry and Bing cherry. This wine was so smooth and easy to drink! There were hints of spice as well that reminded me of a Pinot Noir, my favorite! This is not a wine I would have picked on my own, but I am absolutely going to be purchasing more!
Kenneth Volk 2013 Verdelho - Retail Value $24.00 (Buy here for $17.00)
According to the monthly booklet, Kenneth Volk has over three decades growing Verdelho in Paso Robles. I wasn't sure what Verdelho was, but luckily the monthly booklet goes into great detail, a great feature! Traditionally, white ports were made with Verdelho, but is now used to make table wines. I usually don't drink white wines, but this was a deliciously light bottle! I could see this pairing nicely with fish or used in a pasta sauce. It was on the dry side like a champagne, which I loved, and had hints of citrus and melon undertones. Another aroma that is listed is white flowers, so decadent!
Verdict: This is my first time trying Gold Medal Wine Club and what a great experience it was! I received a total of $54 worth of wine from just the two bottles that are featured each month, which almost breaks even with the $52 box cost including shipping. As someone who drinks a lot of wine, this is a great value! While I do love drinking wine, I can safely say that I don't know much about wine tasting or the overall planting process. What I loved most about this box and found the most value in was the monthly information booklet. This went into such great detail that I spent so much time just reading through everything before tasting. I can't wait to see what next month with Gold Medal Wine Club has to offer!
