"Slay Belles" Review
This month's theme is about "all the complex ladies who kick ass." Since Laserbrain always takes a pop-culture approach to things, I couldn't wait to see which popular female characters they'd pick for this month.
Yesssss! This iconic image of Beyonce is so perfect. They've mixed it in with a Buffy quote on this coloring card but I think it could have stood on its own just as well.
The reverse of the card explains all of the items (super helpful if you're not up on every fandom under the sun) and explains their reasons for selecting the various items this month.
This is interesting... Our first item is actually a download code to get your first month of an online serial called Bookburners for free. (This is listed as a $22 retail value on the info card)
I'm an avid podcast listener, so this has my interest piqued! What seems particularly interesting about Serial Box is that their serials are available in both audio and digital book form, so you can both read or listen each week. I actually don't listen to any fiction podcasts so I'm looking forward to giving this a try!
It does seem like an unusual inclusion in this box, but the main character in this story is a woman who is the "newest recruit to a black-ops magic hunting team, as she travels the world to keep the supernatural in check."
The next item is this small trading card with a super 1980s border.
The info card explains that Sarah is actually the box owner's sister, and the back of the card talks more about her story. I think this is such a positive and personal little inclusion in this box; I know it doesn't add any "value", but I think it's a great way to keep real role models involved in a box that normally deals so much with fictional characters. You don't have to be Beyonce or a vampire slayer to have a positive influence!
Uma Furman Sticker – Estimated Value $2
Our last paper item is this punny "Uma Furman" sticker featuring a cat wearing the iconic Kill Bill yellow jumpsuit. From illustrator Katie Ruby, her shop has a ton of other brilliant celebrity cat puns if you love this as much as I do. Sadly, this particular one isn't available online from what I could tell.
Buffy Scythe Matters Embroidered Patch – Retail Value $8
I was never that into Buffy The Vampire Slayer, sadly, even though literally everyone else I know loves it. I'll have no trouble passing this off to someone who will love this quote.
Quality wise, I do think all the patches we've gotten from Laserbrain so far have been great, and this is no exception. It's got an iron-on backing (though I always recommend sewing these guys on because they all tend to unstick over time). There's enough detail that the image is instantly recognizable, even to someone like me who hasn't seen an episode of Buffy in at least 20 years. For this patch, I love how the scythe extends over the edge of the circle, adding a bit more dimension.
Eleven Enamel Pin – Estimated Value $9
Finally, my favorite item this month: I instantly recognized this as Stranger Things' Eleven during her brief rebellious phase in Season 2. This pin is so nicely made and detailed too! It was hard to capture the shine, but it's really eye-catching.
This pin is a bigger size, over 1", so it's designed with two rubber pinbacks to help keep it upright.
Verdict: Laserbrain Patch Co is a great affordable artsy subscription if you're into patches, pins, and pop culture. Some months are better than others in terms of value, but you'll always get at least two bigger items and some fun extras, too... and the items are typically exclusive. Sometimes they appear later in the Laserbrain Shop, but this month, I couldn't find either of the big-ticket items available elsewhere.
