Takeout Kit December 2017 Review
Takeout Kit's menu assortment is quite extensive. Currently, you can choose from 10 offerings. This month, I received Vietnamese Pho Noodle Soup. You can read a bit of history on each takeout meal along with the region in which it originated on the info card provided.
On the flip side of your info card, you'll find your recipe along with a visual guide to what supplies you'll need (pots, pans, etc.).
Cook Time: 45 minutes
Serves: 4
Here are the ingredients:
Sunlee Rice Stick, 14 oz - Retail Value $1.99
Thin rice noodles surrounded in flavorful broth make up the bulk of this dish.
The box comes with a cardboard takeout container (love them tie-in to the takeout-at-home theme!) full of hoisin sauce, sriracha, lime juice, and rock sugar to season the broth.
100% Pure Extra Virgin Fish Sauce
A staple in Vietnamese cuisine, fish sauce is a condiment made from fermented fish and salt. Vegetarians can omit this ingredient from the broth. Since my husband is vegetarian, and I consider myself to be pescatarian, I added some fish sauce to my bowl at the end instead of incorporating it into the larger pot.
Roland Tofu, 19 oz - Retail Value $3.59 (found here for $3.23)
I'm very familiar with cooking with tofu, though I've never used this brand. I've also never seen tofu in a can!
Herb Blend, Whole Spice Sachet, and Pho Broth Concentrate
These fragrant seasoning packets come in a small baggie to give the broth its signature flavor.
Sliced Mushrooms
These dried mushrooms will rehydrate once added to the hot broth.
First up, mix the lime juice packets with water and slice your tofu into pieces. The tofu is firm but still soft enough that it breaks apart a bit when cut.
The spices are then toasted to release their fragrance and flavor. Once cooled, I placed them in the small mesh bag that comes with the box.
I gave it a few pounds with the end of a spoon to open up the spices.
10 cups of water are mixed with the pho broth concentrate and brought to a boil. This makes a lot of soup! The satchel of toasted whole spices is added, and a separate pot of 5 cups of boiling water is combined with the rock sugar, lime juice, tofu, and mushrooms. This is where you can also add your fish sauce, but I opted for adding it to my serving bowl only. You may also add a different protein instead of the tofu -- thinly sliced beef, shredded chicken, and shrimp are all popular choices.
The rice noodles were super easy to prepare! Just soak them in hot water for 6-7 minutes. Tip: after you run them under cool water, add a little oil and toss to prevent them from sticking together.
Finally, compose your bowl! The rice noodles went in the bottom (and make sure you use a large bowl!), ladle the broth on top, and add sriracha, hoisin sauce, herb blend, lime juice, and fish sauce to customize. The resulting dish was super flavorful and absolutely hit the spot on a frigid winter evening.
Verdict: There's so much to love about Takeout Kit. First off, it's amazing that they offer such a wide variety of dishes inspired by cuisines from around the world. It's really fun to explore preparing the unique meals that I love but have never navigated preparing on my own. It's also awesome that the ingredients have a two-month shelf life, so you can save the kit for the right day. This is different from other meal subscription services that contain lots of fresh produce -- I often feel rushed to prepare them by their expiration date.
These kits would be terrific for parents, someone with a busy lifestyle, or even for a student who wants easy and exciting dishes on hand.
To Wrap Up:
Can I still get this box if I sign up today? Yes! Buy it here as a one-time box for $32.00 to add your own protein or $35.00 with tofu included.

Value Breakdown: This box costs $32.00 a month, including free shipping. This month's box arrived with everything that I needed to cook the featured meal, right down to the olive oil! The serving size for this dish was for four people, which averages out to $8 per person. To eat this meal at a restaurant, you would be spending a lot more per person. I think that the value is absolutely worth it for this delicious Takeout Kit dish!
