TokyoTreat is a snack subscription box filled with candy and other tasty goodies from Japan. A little salty, a little sweet... all very authentic to what you'd find walking through a convenience store in Japan.

TokyoTreat January 2018 Review

TokyoTreat Box January 2018 - Welcome Card TokyoTreat Box January 2018 - Welcome Card Back

TokyoTreat is going green and no longer sending monthly information cards. Now, you can find each snack on the TokyoTreat site, super helpful!

Now for the snacks!

TokyoTreat Box January 2018 - Morinaga Hi-Chew Premium Chardonnay TokyoTreat Box January 2018 - Morinaga Hi-Chew Premium Chardonnay Ingredients TokyoTreat Box January 2018 - Morinaga Hi-Chew Premium Chardonnay Open

Morinaga Hi-Chew Premium Chardonnay - Retail Value $3.80

Hi-chew gummies are so delicious! I have never had this chardonnay flavor before, but I can safely say this was one of my favorites. Each little candy is super soft and chewy with a delicate sugary coating. The flavor was sweet and tart like a grape! The resealable bag means you can share with friends.

TokyoTreat Box January 2018 - Koala's March Kinako TokyoTreat Box January 2018 - Koala's March Kinako Open

Koala's March Kinako - Retail Value $2.50

I love receiving new flavors of Koala's March! These little cookies have an adorable koala print on them, my son loves looking to see what drawing is on each cookie before eating. The cookie is so crumbly and filled with a rich cream filling. This particular flavor is similar to a latte, my favorite! There is a light coffee flavor with hints of vanilla and nuts. I absolutely loved this flavor!

Aerial Rich Cheddar Cheese Flavor - Buy 10 bags for $36.02

I could not put these down! These little puffs have layers of a crispy and crunchy chip. Coated with a rich cheddar cheese flavor that was so bold. Each puff is like a cross between a chip, a Cheeto, and a cracker - so much crunch! I was very excited that the bag was extra large, perfect for sharing.

TokyoTreat Box January 2018 - Slime Jelly DIY Kit Finished TokyoTreat Box January 2018 - Slime Jelly DIY Kit 2

Slime Jelly DIY Kit - Retail Value $4.25

This DIY kit was super easy to make in three simple steps. All I had to do was add water, combine both powders, and stir stir stir. What you are left with is this pretty blue slime! It really is thick like a slime but tastes like blueberry jelly. I wouldn't suggest eating the whole slime on your own though, it is very sugary!

TokyoTreat Box January 2018 - Porinki Corn Snacks TokyoTreat Box January 2018 - Porinki Corn Snacks Ingredients TokyoTreat Box January 2018 - Porinki Corn Snacks Open

Porinki Corn Snack - Retail Value $1.99

This snack was very unique! I couldn't put my finger on what exactly they taste like, but they are most certainly a savory treat. You get a light hint of sweetness mixed with a pretty strong salty flavor. Then I was getting hints of tomato or onion, I couldn't decide which it was. The puffs themselves are very light with a great crunch. While I wasn't in love with these, they were really interesting to try!

TokyoTreat Box January 2018 - Red Snapper Cracker TokyoTreat Box January 2018 - Red Snapper Cracker Open

Red Snapper Cracker - Retail Value $1.00

I thought these were going to be fish flavored, but instead, they were super sweet! Each bite had a lovely crunch to them that was very airy. There were hints of a caramel sweetness that was so delicious. This is another snack that I don't really know what to compare them to, or how to pinpoint all of the flavors I was getting. All I can say is that it was sweet and oh so good!

TokyoTreat Box January 2018 - Pizza Umaibo TokyoTreat Box January 2018 - Pizza Umaibo Open

Pizza Umaibo - Buy a pack of 30 for $11.99

My favorite umaibo ever! This little puff really tastes like you are eating pizza. There are hints of pepperoni, my favorite, and then a yummy cheese coating. It is like eating a three cheese and pepperoni pizza all in one little puff. So, so good!

TokyoTreat Box January 2018 - Ramune Soda Candy Share Pack TokyoTreat Box January 2018 - Ramune Soda Candy Share Pack Full TokyoTreat Box January 2018 - Ramune Soda Candy Share Pack Open

Ramune Soda Candy Share Pack - Buy a pack of 5 for $3.70

These little candies reminded me of something I would have eaten when I was little! I love when a candy can take me back to my childhood. The share pack comes with so many packets that you will have this candy for a while, and plenty to share with friends! The candies themselves are hard but break apart easily when you bite into them. They sort of remind me of a candy necklace! The flavors are sweet with a light bitterness, just like a fizzy soda!

The Verdict: This month's TokyoTreat was filled with lots of yummy snacks that were very exciting to try! There were a few snacks that I really loved but had the hardest time pinpointing what flavors I was tasting. That is what makes TokyoTreat so much fun, you never know what you are going to get and there is so much to discover!  There were a few snacks that I have had before from other snack boxes, but these came in new flavors that I really enjoyed.Plus, this was probably my favorite DIY kit that I have ever received. A super fun TokyoTreat box for January that is packed full of so many snacks you will be sharing them for days to come!

Don’t choose tokyotreat if you are worried In the slightest you might have to deal with their customer “support”, they don’t have any intention of offering any solutions, they will string you along for a bit before telling you there’s nothing they can do for you. They do a bunch of promotions to get you to sign up for multiple months, getting you to pay in advance, and they won’t send you the promotion items they promised (this happened to me with the black friday promo), they will tell you the items where “free” so they don’t owe you anything. The entire operation seems shady, they tried to convince me canada post must have confiscated my coin purse and ice cream kitkats even though the seal on the box wasn’t broken. I can’t wait till my subscription is over so I don’t have to do business with them anymore, they are predators, their prey are fans of Japanese snacks. The way they can make you feel powerless by taking your money and not delivering on their end of the deal is frustrating and not worth the stress. Save yourself and find a diffirent subscription service, if I can save even one person from having to deal with the sheer injustice I’ve felt I’m content.
