TopMunch December 2017 Review
This month's box is the Holiday Special Cultural Snack box! The snacks are a mixture of some older snacks that have been featured before and some new.
The booklet this month is unique since there isn't a featured destination. This month we have a letter wishing everyone a happy holiday season, a section that goes over the question of "What is culture," how different parts of the world celebrate Christmas and New Years, and of course a holiday music section. I love how they brought the holiday season into this month's box!
Time to snack!
Asturi Foccacci Bites, 4.23 oz. - Retail Value $7.00 (found here for $6.50)
Our first snack of the month comes to us from the Mediterranean. The "Mediterranean Diet" is noted on the back of the bag as a naturally healthy way of life, and that snacks help us to enjoy life and friends. I would agree with that! These bites are just packed full of flavors. You get hints of garlic, parsley, and that yummy Mediterranean olive oil. They are extra thick and crispy, perfect to eat on their own or dipped in hummus like I enjoyed mine!
Mung Bean Cake (Banh Dau Xanh), 10.5 oz. – Retail Value $9.00 (found here for $8.00)
I tried this delicious treat in my first ever TopMunch box! I loved it then and now! These cakes come from Vietnam and have been produced since 1922 by Bao Hien Rong Vang. Each batch is made with the highest quality standards, so much that the company would destroy batches if they didn't meet their standards 100%. It makes sense though because these cakes are now famously known as banh tien or "cake fit to offer to the king." This cake is so sweet and crumbly, it just melts in your mouth for this never-ending fluffy sweetness. I like eating mine with my afternoon coffee, but this is best served with green tea.
Glico Winter Melty Pocky, 1.98 oz. – Retail Value $5.00 (found here for $4.80)
Pocky is such a fun snack and I have tried so many different flavors from various snack boxes. This is a rare seasonal limited edition flavor which is super exciting! The chocolate coating is much thicker than your traditional pocky, designed this way to instantly melt in your mouth into a creamy chocolate. You will also notice that there is a light dusting of cocoa powder on each stick. This adds a whole other level of chocolate goodness! I will say that the chocolate does melt away in your mouth and you can really tell that the layer of chocolate on the vanilla biscuit is much thicker. Such a fun snack to enjoy!
Bourbon Elise Cookie, 3.87 oz. – Retail Value $6.50 (found here for $6.00)
I don't know what it is about wafer cookies that I can't resist! My Mom and brother were over when I opened this box and we all couldn't stop eating these. Basically, you have two wafer cookies stuck together to make this cool shell that then has a cream filling. This box features two flavors, a chocolate and a white cream. The chocolate is made with a choco cream that is so sweet and delicious. Then, the white cream is made with a vanilla flavor cream that is so rich and sweet.
Haldirams Gujarati Mixture, 7.06 oz. – Retail Value $6.00 (found here for $5.25)
The Haldirams brand is an 80-year-old company that is well known all over the world. This particular snack mix was created after the cuisine of Gujarat (a state in India) that is known for its sweet, salty, and spicy foods. This snack absolutely brings all of those flavors into one bag! The mixture is filled with puffed rice, dried noodles, toasted lentils and peanuts. On top of that goes a unique spice blend that makes this snack sweet, salty, and oh so spicy! This is the type of snack that my husband is obsessed with so I was nice and only ate a few handfuls, saving the rest for him. What I can tell you though is that this mixture is packed full of flavors that will make you wanting to eat the whole bag in one day!
La Florentine Soft Torrone with Almonds/Pistachio, 2 pieces – Retail Value $2.80 (found here for $2.20)
My neighbor gave me a small packet of these a few months ago and I have dreamt about them ever since. Imagine my face when I saw these in this month's box, I couldn't handle the excitement! This snack comes from Italy and plays a huge role in their culture and traditions. Desserts play a huge role at weddings, holiday parties, and other gatherings as a way to decorate the table. This particular brand makes many different flavors of the torrone nougat candies, but this blend is by far my favorite. Made with honey, sugar, egg whites, toasted almonds and pistachios. Each bite is so sweet with a marshmallow like texture that you just can't get enough of. The pistachios add this incredible crunch and you really get hints of the honey throughout. I mean, you just need to go try one of these candies because they are beyond amazing!
Verdict: TopMunch is one of those boxes that I get so excited for each month! I want to know the location and love looking through my booklet to discover what's inside and learn about the featured area. It is like taking a mini vacation right in your home with some delicious snacks. Not only have I been able to try some really unique foods, but I have learned so much about different parts of the world that I might never get a chance to visit. This month's box was so much fun bringing a mixture of snacks from all over the world!
At $29 a month, I received six total snacks which average out to $4.83 per item (or valued at $36.30 retail or $32.75 with sale prices). Even though the average cost per item seems high, the snacks this month were larger and came in at a higher retail value than past months. I think the retail value is worth the monthly cost of this box especially since you are receiving such unique snacks that you can't easily find!
