WODBOM stands for “Workout of the Day–Box of the Month” and is a subscription box designed for CrossFit enthusiasts, by CrossFit enthusiasts. (Although, I don’t think you absolutely have to be into CrossFit to get something out of this box, as long as you are interested in working out!)

This box was sent to us for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

WODBOM January 2018 Review

This is a time of year when I expect a lot out of a fitness subscription box (people are making exercise and diet resolutions, after all), so let’s see how WODBOM stacks up:

WODBOM January 2018 Booklet front

Included was an information card describing the products in the box.

WODBOM January 2018 Literature

There were also some coupons and product literature this month, as usual.

Millennium Blend Protein Snack Bites

Millennium Blend Protein Snack Bites (150 g) – Retail Value $9.95

These are supposed to cut down on your appetite between meals. They are 10 calories per serving (equal to 2 “bites”), so that would be great if they worked, but they didn’t do a whole lot for me. They are mostly whey protein and they reminded me of eating TUMS, although I think TUMS have a better texture. I personally find that I need a lot of bulk (i.e., fiber) to feel full, so these didn’t really take the edge off my appetite. But, this is a totally appropriate item to include in a box like this and I’m glad I had the chance to try it out, even if it didn’t end up being a hit.

Livesore Apparel Vintage Livesore T-Shirt

Livesore Apparel Vintage Livesore T-Shirt – Retail Value $24.95

This exact color wasn’t available, so I’ve linked to the same design in a different color (and it has basically the same price as the information card, as well). Little short-sleeved t-shirts like this are my absolute favorite workout apparel items (well, outside of yoga pants) to receive in subscription boxes so I was definitely happy to see this. It is a little loose (WODBOM goes down to size S for women’s apparel but I am more properly an XS on top) but great for easy cardio days. It’s also very soft!

Sandbar Hand Care “The Sandbar”

Sandbar Hand Care “The Sandbar” – Listed Value $25

This item isn’t available alone from the manufacturer, but only as part of a set. Considering the price of the set (see link above), though, the $25 from the information card seems reasonable. The black end of this bar is sandpaper or something equally abrasive and it is intended for getting rid of calluses on your hands. I am still lifting pretty light weights after my hysterectomy so I don’t get calluses on my hands, but I desperately need this for my heels, so it will get used, just not necessarily in the way intended. I am just using this for a little bit at a time right now as I need to see how much exfoliation I can handle at once.

Mg12 Magnesport Magnesium Oil Spray

Mg12 Magnesport Magnesium Oil Spray (2 fl oz) – Retail Value $9.95

I’m a longtime fan of magnesium oil. You can spray it on the bottoms of your feet to help you sleep or calm down (seriously). I suspect it is included in this box for use on sore muscles (since Epsom salts are magnesium sulfate and this is just a different delivery vehicle for magnesium ions). This brand is new to me but the product seems to work the same as other brands I’ve used in the past and the sprayer is decent.

Smashpack Protein in Tropical Fruit

Smashpack Protein in Orange Peach

Smashpack Protein in Tropical Fruit and Orange Peach (5 oz each) – Buy a 6 Pack for $17.99

This stuff has been making the rounds in food and fitness boxes again lately. I would recommend trying it if you want a protein-containing snack but don’t like the texture of regular protein bars. However, I am not personally a fan (orange peach is a little better than tropical fruit, in my opinion). Because this is whey-based, to me, it just tastes like vaguely fruit-flavored spray cheese, and that is not a winning combination. Your mileage may vary.

Oats Overnight in Green Apple Cinnamon

Oats Overnight in Green Apple Cinnamon

Oats Overnight in Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana and Green Apple Cinnamon (3 oz each) – Buy a 3 Pack with Shaker Bottle for $18

Overnight oats are popular lately. The directions here say to mix this with milk and leave it in the refrigerator overnight. I tried the chocolate one so far. I doubt I’ll ever be an overnight oats person, as I prefer mine cooked in water (fewer calories there) and hot, although I will admit the flavor was nice, and this is a convenient way to get grains in the morning. Watch out for the calories, though – each pouch is over 300 and that’s before adding the milk. (Instant oatmeal packets are more like 150-200 calories each, by way of comparison.)

Verdict: I calculated a value of $69.85 for the January WODBOM and that does not include the protein pouches or oats, so really, it’s worth at least $75. That is a really good value for this box and is more than $30 over the cost of the box plus shipping. Although I wasn’t a big fan of the Millennium “bites” or Smashpack pouches, overall the box was useful for me. The Sandbar has already come in handy and the t-shirt will get used a lot, and I was due for some more magnesium oil. Overall, I was happy with the box and again, I will say that I think it is useful even if you do some sort of workouts other than CrossFit.

To Wrap Up:

Can I still get this box if I sign up today? No, WODBOM ships on the 5th of the month, so your first box would be February’s.
