Date Night In Box February 2018 Review

The first page of the included booklet was a welcome letter that explained what we could expect on our date and highlighted the theme of the box which for this month was ‘Delivered with Love’ and was supposed to take us back in time to France in 1919.

In the letter they reference the email you should have received when your box shipped. The email lets you know the theme and provides links to an invitation you can print out to give to your date as well as a link to the website featuring a menu designed around your date theme. Although we didn’t use the menu this time, I was really impressed with how they included a cocktail recipe (and a mocktail recipe if you would rather), an appetizer, main course and dessert all based on the theme for the month. There was even a complete shopping list to print out which made it all very convenient. I love that this is an option- if you have the time, of course!

The next page featured an itinerary for the night. The first step is to set the mood for your date. In order to help you do this, they provide a custom date playlist on Spotify that you can access and listen to. This month was very Gatsby-esque to fit in with the theme. They also included a lavender sachet which was wonderfully fragrant and was meant to transport us to the foothills of France for our date.

Jacquet French Chocolate Crepes, 6.77 oz. - Retail Value $10.80

Also included in the box was a snack. The filling inside of these French Crepes reminded me of Nutella. I liked that they came individually packaged and ready to eat. They were even better when warmed up a bit in the microwave!

The first activity for our date was to take a Love Languages Quiz. This was based on a book by Dr. Gary Chapman, The 5 Love Languages, and was designed to help you and your partner figure out the best way to show love for one another. The quiz took about 5 minutes to complete and afterward we were able to add up our scores to determine which Love Languages we needed to hear most from our partner. Some of the languages are Words of Affirmation, Quality Time and Physical Touch to give you an idea. I really feel like this helped us learn more about ourselves and each others’ needs. It opened up a discussion for what we can do for our partner that makes them feel most loved.

Included in the box were 4 profile cards for us to choose a character to become for the night. Each card gave a brief background on the character and they encourage you to use your imagination to come up with accents, a story for how you met and even dress up if you’d like. There’s a lot of freedom to play around with this and get into character as much as you’re comfortable with.

The next activity was to write a love letter to your partner (as yourself) that you will exchange at the end of the night- if you solve all of the clues, but I’ll get to that next. All of the supplies needed to write your letter were included and I think the best part was that they provided several writing prompts that you could use for inspiration. It was a little difficult to come up with a love letter on the spot, so these really helped us to focus our letters.

The main event for the evening was the Clue game. Everything so far had been based around our theme of traveling back in time to France and now we learn that you and your partner haven’t seen each other in three years. Your only communication has been through letters and now you are finally able to meet again and deliver your final letter in person. I thought it was a very romantic concept and it was fun to challenge ourselves with the game.

There were four clues that you had to solve to find out the details of your meeting. I’m not going to go into a lot of detail because I don’t want to spoil the fun, but in the end, the clues told us where to meet each other, the date and the time. A few times we got stuck and sometimes the little rhymes on the cards left us scratching our heads, but fortunately, they provide a link to the website where you can get further hints. I’ll admit, we had to use it a few times, but to be fair, there was a typo on one of the cards that set us back a bit! The last step was to exchange our love letters which I think was a sweet way to end the date box portion of the evening. (What you do next is up to you!)

Verdict: This was my first Date Night In Box and I have to say that I love the creativity and convenience of it. The fact that we don’t have to find a sitter and that they included extras to help set the ambiance such as the Spotify playlist are little details that make it such a complete experience.

While I had every intention of going all out and making the food and drinks from the menu, I was actually really relieved that I didn’t have to do that! The date still took us a good 2 hours with only using the box items and could have easily been extended into a full evening if we wanted. As tired parents of two kids, it was really nice to be able to pare it down to basics and not have to do anything extra to make this date feel special. The activities and supplies included were just enough and I definitely think it was worth the $41.99 ($34.99 + $7.00 shipping) for the unique date. That’s much less than dinner and a movie would cost plus we really got to connect through conversations we might not have had otherwise.

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!

I concur on the dollar store crap. When I asked them about the product to price value, they told me I was paying for the experience. Everything I a received was stuff people give away for free at vendor shows. 5 candies, a wooden knife to split them, wax melts, 2 pens, sample oil, a mouse pad puzzle, tasting sheets, and a coupon (like buy $100 in wine and get $50 off). Pretty sure I have all of this in a junk drawer already. Customer service was HORRIBLE and kept giving me pre-written responses and told me there are no refunds or credits for boxes which you check a box agreeing to when you buy the box initially. Total marketing scheme by keeping the contents of the boxes “a surprise.” This company is a ripoff!

This box is complete garbage! The January 2019 box is full of dollar store crap. I asked to cancel a month early because every box I have gotten is not worth the price. They would not do it and insisted on sending a final box because “I should think of it like a magazine subscription.” Such bs!

This company is a scam, they automatically auto renew you and refuse to cancel subscriptions. The “dates” are cute, but nothing you cant plan yourself for less. They charged my card $120 for 3 moths on an auto renew and refused to refund even though the boxes had not been shipped. It also took me over a month to get them to finally cancel my subscription. Had to return to sender the boxes and call my back to say they are absolutely not authorized to use my credit card. Cute idea but terrible company. Ha

WARNING: DO NOT ORDER DATE NIGHT IN. The company charged me for multiple months even though I canceled on the cancelation date, and will not refund the money. They keep your credit cared and make it very difficult to cancel. Dates (I received 3 before the mis-charge) were complicated and exhausting to set up, including things like going to get film developed and extensive planning. Not good for busy couples who work, and more work than fun. Not worth the hassle of the dates, and definitely not the hassle of trying to cancel!!!

Same thing happened to me! Total scam of a company!

It seemed really complicated, but fun. I’d definitively like to see more boxes. This might be really fun for my husband and I.

Is it just me or is this ridiculously overpriced? Maybe I just don’t “get” it.

My husband felt the same way you do! I think it really comes down to the personal experience that you have with the box! For me- when else was I going to get my husband to take a Love Languages Quiz or write me a love letter on demand? 😉 I’m not sure I’ll feel this way about every box, but this one allowed us to connect a little deeper as a couple which I really appreciated!

Weird question….did they misspell Parisian as peresian?

Brandi

Yes, I believe they did. 😬 I was trying not to be too nit picky since this was only the first box from them, but I noticed that as well!
