Horror Pack January 2018 Review
Final Girls (2015) - Retail Value $9.99
This may have been my favorite movie of the bunch, excluding The Craft! I am a fan of American Horror Story, so I was glad to see Taissa Farmiga among this amazing cast. Farmiga plays a young woman that goes to an anniversary screening of a cult slasher film her late mother starred in. She and her friends are transported into the movie and have to fight for their lives against a Jason Voorhees like character. The casting is phenomenal and this film is rather clever and well written. This movie gives you scares, laughs, and a few tear-jerker moments. It truly is the perfect homage to 80s slasher movies like Friday the 13 and Nightmare on Elm Street. I can’t recommend it enough!
The Expelled (2010) - Retail Value $8.91 (found here for $8.36)
This British horror-slasher film is about a high school that is tormented by a gang of mysterious hooded men. The murderous crew tortures and kills all they come across in this terrifying film. What I truly love about this film is the nuances and subtleties in it that make it suspenseful and haunting. I feel that contemporary American horror films really focus more on the gruesome money shot death scenes and not leaving some details a mystery. I legitimately had to walk away and pace a few times around my living room because this movie had me so anxious! The end is elusive and makes you guess and try to imagine what actually happens. The end leaves a lot to the imagination and has quite a few loose ends opening it up for a sequel, but I hope they leave it as a standalone piece.
The Craft/The Covenant Pack - Retail Value $13.99
I was extremely excited to see this witchy duo in January’s Horror Pack box; mainly due to one of my all-time favorite films, The Craft, being included! I am not sure how I did not already own this, but I know I had a recorded copy of this on VHS as a teenager. No other line in a movie resonated more with my high school gal pals and me than, “We are the weirdos, mister!” The movie is about a young woman moving to LA that has telekinetic powers who becomes the fourth member of a coven at her new high school. If you haven’t seen this cult classic starring Neve Campell, Robin Tunney, Rachel Sweet, and Fairuza Balk… well, get on it. Skeet Ulrich is in it too if you are a fan of Scream or Riverdale as well.
The second movie in this combo pack is The Covenant. This film is about a coven of warlocks at a posh academy that runs the risk of their secret powers being revealed by a resentful warlock who’s family was banished. This movie is like The Craft meets Underworld. The special effects were decent, but the storyline was eh. Give me The Craft any day of the week, duh!
Ghost from the Machine (2010) - Retail Value $11.00
This film details two brothers dealing with the grief of losing their parents in an automobile accident. The eldest brother creates an electromagnetic device that is able to breach the wall between the living and the dead. This movie serves as a great example of the phrase, “let sleeping dogs lie,” but in this case “let the dead lie in peace.” The story is compelling, but the acting is something to be desired. I still enjoyed this movie, for what it is worth.
Verdict: This month’s Horror Pack was a success! Heck, January’s selections may be my favorite that I have reviewed so far from Horror Pack. My favorite movies included this month were The Craft, Final Girls, and The Expelled, but truth be told I enjoyed all the selections this time around! I truly appreciate getting the more obscure and independent releases I would have never seen otherwise, as well!
