Orglamix January 2018 “Now and Zen” Review
This month’s theme is “Now and Zen,” which fits with the image I’ve come to expect from Orglamix themes over time. Please note this is January’s box, which I received about a week into February (have seen a lot of USPS delays lately, though):
The box came with an information card detailing the items and theme for January.
Lava Stone Diffuser Necklace – Listed Value $9
This was packaged with the essential oil (see below). It actually took me a minute to figure out what it was because it kind of looked like a bracelet and necklace stuck together. This does fit me – just barely – when the chain extender in the back is at maximum length, but I have a thin neck and it probably won’t work for everyone. I may modify this by replacing part or all of the chain for a different fit. Anyway, what you do is add a drop or two of essential oil to the lava beads, which have pores that trap the scent and slowly release it throughout the day. These seemed to do that pretty well, though you may want to refresh periodically.
Now + Zen Essential Oil Blend – Listed Value $5
Wow, you don’t need much of this to get a pretty powerful scent on the lava beads. But, I really like this one. It is a citrus blend of actual citrus (no lemongrass) that seems pretty calming.
Maskimizer Mask Elixir – Listed Value $16
This goes with another item from the box (see below). You can either mix it with a clay mask (it’s supposed to help spreadability) or use it before. I opted to use this in place of water. I can’t say for sure how well it helped because I don’t always follow the mixing directions for clay masks. Instead, I use a little plastic bowl and some measuring spoons until the consistency feels right to me. But, I have enough left to try a few more times so maybe with extended use I will start to notice a difference in my skin, as it is also supposed to help with skin absorption of mask components.
Revitalizing Powder Face Mask – Listed Value $16
I think this is a great fit for a box with a Zen theme. Using a clay mask is “sit back and relax” time for me (usually I read novels as I’m too impatient to just sit there, but even that is pretty relaxing as I’m frequently on the go with something or other). This mixed up nicely with the maskimizer and didn’t sting. It absorbed some excess oils from my face without being drying. And it is enough for multiple uses, which is nice.
Ultraviolet Natural Eyeshadow – Listed Value $12.50
You’ll usually get at least one loose powder pigment like this with Orglamix. The colors are always (or almost always) exclusive and not available in their shop (though the information card prices are right in line with their prices for similar items). I love the formula of these; it doesn’t irritate my eyes and it blends well. This color is a little brighter than I typically use on my lids but I think it would make a really good liner (where I am typically a little bolder) – I just need some practice using powder that way, first.
Inner Glow “All Over Glow” Loose Powder – Listed Value $21
Various language about using this all over the face or using this as a highlighter appears in the information booklet. But I am too pale to use this as a highlighter and I don’t want a pink face! However, this totally works as a blush for me. The color is buildable to an extent, and I think the use of this product could be adjusted a bit so it works for people of varying skin tones.
Here are swatches of the eyeshadow and “inner glow” blush.
Verdict: I calculated a value of $79.50 for the December Orglamix subscription box. None of the items were in their shop, so I had to use values from the information card, but they seem reasonable based on prices of other Orglamix items. This value was well above the cost of the subscription. I wish the diffuser necklace was a little more usable as-is since I know not all subscribers are like me and have 2 rooms full of jewelry-making supplies to modify it. But, lava stones seem to be “in” lately and if you aren’t able to modify this specific necklace, you can probably find something else to apply the oil to (or may already have something else from another subscription box). I was a fan of the mask and the color cosmetics will definitely get used, as well.
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, this was January's box and they typically ship around the 10th, so you’d get the March box as your first one.
Value Breakdown: At $29 per box, here’s approximately what you are paying per item:
- Necklace $3.28
- Essential oil $1.82
- Maskimizer $5.84
- Mask $5.84
- Eyeshadow $4.56
- Blush $7.66
