Splash Wines February 2018 Review
I received a receipt listing the name of each wine that I received, and this larger information card about the benefits of becoming a member of Splash Wines.
Time to taste the wine!
2014 Chateau Franc - Cardinal Bordeaux - Retail Value $40 (Buy here for $15)
Our first wine of the month is a luxurious red at its best! This vintage is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. I taste tested this bottle with my family and everyone kept saying that they tasted coffee. This blend doesn't contain coffee but it does hold a light smokiness and almonds. Yum! We also tasted bold fruit flavors that really bring out a lovely tartness. This is the type of wine that you want to save for a special occasion, you won't regret it!
El Explorador Malbec - Retail Value $15.95
Malbec is my absolute favorite wine, so I saved this one for myself! This wine was so incredibly smooth, a bottle that you can drink with fish or meat or even pizza. I got a very light oak flavor as well that really blended everything together. The biggest piece of flavor for me was fruit, bold plumes that really bring a tartness that makes Malbec so outstanding.
Gosford Reserve Shiraz - Retail Value $13.95 (Buy here for $7.41)
This next wine is a shiraz, cabernet blend. This bottle was super unique and something I don't think I would have picked out on my own. There were notes of spice and even pepper that really stuck with me. I also tasted a lovely strawberry flavor that was so interested mixed with the pepper-like flavors. I could see this wine being great with a dessert or a steak dinner.
Inti Cabernet Sauvignon - Retail Value $14.95
This was a very traditional Cabernet Sauvignon, a great bottle to have around for a weekend or just when friends drop by. I smelled raisins the moment I opened this bottle and got a light hint of raisins throughout. The biggest flavors that I usually find in a cab are cherry and blackberry. I tasted each in this bottle and they provided a wonderful fruit flavor with hints of tartness. Such a great bottle to have around!
Winery of Good Hope Pinotage - Retail Value $19.95
The grape for this wine comes from South Africa, that will come across similar to a Shiraz even though this bottle is a Pinot. This was another bottle that I tried with my family and we were all super intrigued by this winery! Right off the bat, I tasted a really tart cherry flavor that made this wine extra sweet. There is a note that this wine can be enjoyed chilled, which I can totally see. This would be a great summer wine. Through the sweetness, I tasted hints of spice that I really loved and really lingered in the end.
Zaca Mesa Cuvee Red - Retail Value $22.00
This wine is aged in French Oak for 15 months, another wine to buy for a special occasion! This wine is very robust, and I even tasted a light tobacco flavor. This was another bottle that I tasted with my family and my Dad thought this was the best bottle. It was full and extra dry, the type of wine you want to enjoy with a steak dinner.
Verdict: This was my first experience with Splash Wines and I really loved each of the bottles this month! I selected to receive all reds, but I thought that there was still a great variety of blends, some of which I would have never picked out myself. I love drinking and purchasing wines, but this month's box really brought a curation of blends and wineries that were all new to me. Plus, since I received six bottles, I was able to take some over to my weekly family dinner so that we could all taste test together! The one thing that would have made this box really standout from other wine boxes I have received would have been an information card or booklet that broke down each bottle of wine in more detail. While I love drinking wine, I don't know much about grapes and the overall process, but I really love learning about wines before I start tasting.
