BoxyCharm is a full-size beauty and makeup subscription box. They always provide a great value compared the cost of the box. (If you are a makeup addict - I HIGHLY recommend this box!)

This box was sent to us for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

The Subscription Box: BoxyCharm

The Cost: $21 a month

The Products: 5-6 beauty items that will include nail care, skin care, makeup, haircare, fragrance and more. (At least 4 of those items will be full-sized).

Check out all of my BoxyCharm reviews and the Beauty Subscription Box Directory!

Each box comes with a card detailing the items included.

Now, time for the items!

Boxycharm X PUR Cosmetics Palette Retail Value $36

All subscribers will receive this item.

The formulas are cruelty-free, gluten-free, talc-free, and vegan-friendly! The palette includes a mix of mattes and shimmers:

Here they are swatched:

Excellent pigment and shimmer. There is some fallout on the shadows so make sure to use a good primer.

(Also props to Boxycharm for sending us a palette with some unique colors!)

Pretty Vulgar “Make Them Blush” Powder Blush in Prim Vixen - Retail Value $26

This item is in all boxes. All subscribers will receive either the shade Prim Vixen or Hush Blush.

I love everything about this blush! The packaging is so cute, the pigment and staying power are fantastic, and the formula is cruelty-free, paraben-free, sulfate-free, and phthalate-free!

It's a bright pink shade with a matte finish. While it can be a pretty bold look for my skin tone, I was able to blend it out to a shade that works well for me.

Here it is swatched:

(Top swatch to show the full pigment, bottom swatch to show it blended out.)

The Vintage Company Smokey Eye Brush Set - Retail Value $23.27

All subscribers will receive this item.

This set includes a step by step approach for using brushes to get a smokey eye look:

Step 1: Use the shadow brush to sweep a light, shimmery color over your lids.

Step 2: Use the angled shadow brush to apply a darker shadow to your crease and outer corners.

Step 3: Use the smudger brush to blend the colors together, to use an even darker color to accentuate the crease, and/or to add color below your lash line.

(Smudger, Angled Shadow Brush, Shadow Brush)

These brushes are made with soft, synthetic bristles, and are a perfect companion to the PUR palette!

South Mane 3 Eye Gel Packs - Retail Value $9

This item is a possible variant, but so far it has been in all box variations we've seen.

The pack includes 3 sets of eye masks.

I found these to be on par with most of the eye gels I've sampled. They were gentle on my skin and left my undereye area feeling refreshed.

Butter London Iconoclast Mascara - Retail Value $20

This item is a variant. Subscribers will receive 1 of 5 different mascaras.

This mascara delivered on volume, length, and overall bold lashes - I'm impressed. Just FYI - the formula went on a little wet and took a few minutes to fully dry.

Verdict: This box has a value of about $114.27! As always, the value for Boxycharm is amazing! This box has lots of makeup I can use for everyday looks, some useful makeup brushes, and a very fun palette - I'm thrilled with the March box!

I think Boxycharm is a perfect subscription for people who love makeup. You're going to get a lot of palettes, highlighters, etc., so it's great if you want to build your collection and try all the things! (If you only need one highlighter/palette in your makeup arsenal, this might not be the best box for you.)

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes! The Boxycharm waitlist is temporarily lifted!

Coupon – No coupons at this time.

Value Breakdown: At $21 for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Palette: $6.61
  • Blush: $4.78
  • Brushes: $4,28
  • Eye Gels: $1.65

This was my first box ever and I was SO excited, only to find out when I opened it I was missing not one, not two, but THREE items! I am missing the blush, the mascara (which was the one everyone was complaining about making their eyes burn) AND the under eye gels! I emailed them but c’mon that’s crazy! My box weighed .8 lbs.

Not too happy with the eye shadow pallet. I don’t care for the eye shadow colors, they are too warm for my skin tone. I got the super bright pink blush and I actually really love it! It looks great as long as I use a really light hand to apply it, I have been using a fan brush to put it on. I gave away the bella mascara. Haven’t tried the eye gels yet but I am super happy to receive them. The brushes are nice. Hoping for an eye shadow pallet I can use next month.

This is the first time in the 8 months I have been receiving Boxycharm that I got an eyeshadow with actual colors and not neutrals! I love color and am experimenting with this one. I am going to use an eyeshadow primer as suggested as my shadow wore off quite quickly. The blush is too pink but layers well. I have not found that eye treatments for dark circles work but I am pleasantly surprised with these! I used my first last night and in the morning my dark circles were almost gone! I am wearing the second today with the expectation my circles will be even better, (suggested use is to apply them 3 days in a row). I already have A LOT of brushes but hey! What’s your point? Can you HAVE too many brushes? I got Double Decker Lashes. It went on clumpy, I really had to work to get it on smoother, I am unimpressed. This is the only subscription box I have stuck with. Other boxes I don’t like and won’t use most of the items. Boxy lets me try all sorts of makeup I wouldn’t have before and I usually like everything in the box after I figure out how to use the product. I love you Boxycharm! I look forward to your box every month!

Great, got the Bella Pierre mascara. Starting to really get annoyed with Boxy sending makeup made in PRC (People’s republic of China). I won’t use it I just don’t trust that there is any quality control.

Reply ButtonReply

Virginia

I don’t know about their quality control but they test all cosmetics on dogs if sold in China. I think if you check everything you buy you will be surprised how many are made or assembled in China.

Reply ButtonReply

Katie

If a product is MADE in China, it is not required to be tested on animals. If it is being SOLD in MAINLAND China, then it is required by law to be tested on animals, the most common being rodents and rabbits.

If you’re not getting payoff from this palette you probably aren’t using a primer or wetting your shimmers. The primer helps the shadow to stick to the lid and you should be using it with any eyeshadow as it increases the wear time and helps with creasing. I mean actual primer…please don’t use concealer or foundation. It’s not the same and complexion products will cause your eyeshadow to crease. NYX Proof It Waterproof primer is excellent and very affordable at $7.00.
You also need to wet the shimmers. If you don’t know what I mean…spray your brush with setting spray or water to dampen it, then apply your shimmer. It intensifies that shimmer and makes it pop. This is going to be true with most shimmers. It also vastly reduces fallout.
These two little extra steps will maximize your color payoff, make your shadow last, help prevent it from creasing or traveling and minimize fallout.
Important to note if you’ve never used a shadow primer. Let it dry completely first and then use a light shade all over the eye where the shadow is going first. This will help your shadows to glide over the primer for easy blending.

Also, use your fingertips to apply hard to apply shadows, Some are better used with your fingertips. I use Urban Decay primer and it works wonderful and a little goes a long way and will last almost 8 to 10 months or more. I just purchased Prism and the New Natural palette from Anastasia of Beverly Hills. And I love so much. Lasts all day. Tomorrow I will try this palette. Looks beautiful and they are both 45.00.

Love this box!! Sadly I didn’t receive any mascara..😢

Bella01

Maggie darling why don’t you email them. You deserve mascara too. Or I will give you one of mine.

I see everyone posting about the put bar palette and the Smokey brush but sadly I didn’t receive them in my boxy this month I’m miss two item. Wish I’ve gotten mines in too.

I loved the last PUR palette we got, but, on me, this one is just AWFUL. The colors don’t show up on my lids at all, and you can see dust clouds coming off the brush it’s so powdery. Is it just me? If so, I wonder if it’s my skin type or a bad batch?

Reply ButtonReply

Mary

I am not a fan of this palette either. It’s not even close to MAC quality which sets the bar for me. The shadows are too powdery and don’t blend well. If I have to use a ton of tips and tricks to make a shadow work it’s not a very good shadow. I was super excited by the colors and completely underwhelmed by the performance. The brushes were just meh. I got the Butter London mascara which does a crappy job of lengthening and separating my lashes. The odd bulb at the end of the tip really does not work and just gets in the way. The Pretty Vulgar blush was the real winner for me. I thought it would be too pink; but, it goes on lightly and has real staying powder. The matte finish is perfect. I haven’t tried the gel packs yet; but, I am holding out hope for them based on reviews.

Nyesha

I thought I was the only one. The colors didn’t show on my lids that well either. I had to remove it and go with my usual colourpop colors. I said I will attempt again when I have more time.

The packaging on that blush is WONDERFUL! I love it. I got Hush Blush and really wanted the lighter shade.. if anyone wants to trade, let a girl know!

Alsooo, I tried out the South Mane eye gels tonight and got burned. I was excited to try them out because I’ve been on a real gel kick lately. Had them on for less than 30 seconds and now I (still) have red marks outlining the spot where they were under my eyes. Just to let y’all know…

I’m in sub heaven with this box. I can use everything single thing that came today but I going to surprise a friend. She’s recently had to go on disability due to cancer and she’s fiend-ing for that Pur palette, especially the blue which I will NEVER use but love about five shades. I’m rocking the glam palette and one from FFF. I can’t wait to shock her on Saturday. I totally love the brushes and blush and double decker and eye gels… yay Boxy!

Reply ButtonReply

Nicole B

That is such a wonderful thing to do Tanya. Bless your heart!

Vari

Am i the only one who’s over the eye shadow palettes? I have eye shadow coming out of my ears!!! I could never use all this eye shadow 🙁

Reply ButtonReply

AmyM

So pleased with my box this month. I received the Hush Blush and the Double Decker mascara. Exactly the variations I was hoping for. I can’t wait to use the turquoise shadow in the pallette for liner and create a look w/the peachy shades. So much fun!

Reply ButtonReply

Wendy

I just opened my box, Variation 1 according to the card. I am over the moon excited I got the Hush Blush and Double Decker mascara! I had expected the Primson Vixon and tried not to get my hopes up on the mascara too. Now to play with this beautiful pallet! Thank you Boxy!

Bella01

I am so happy too. I got the same box. I love the Double-decker Mascara. I was browsing their site-Butter cosmetics and I ordered some sparkly eyeliner too. Butter brand is so neat. Do we buy these items at the boxy site or do we buy directly from Butter? Like Birch box, you can buy everything from their site.

Candace

I got the same box and I’m happy as heck about it. I already had the double decker mascara and it’s great so I’m pleased to get a second one basically free.

Reply ButtonReply

Nicole

I of course just got the belle pierre mascara! Womp womp! 😒. The box is great regardless but come on with the belle Pierre already!

Reply ButtonReply

Misti

I got the belle pierre also it made my eyes water so I can’t recommend that to anyone. I think it is a pretty cheap brand because Zulliy always has sales on it for cheap

Reply ButtonReply

Victoria

This mascara sucks lol it smells awful and just yuck does nothing for my lashes. I go I it also!

Reply ButtonReply

Kim

I got my box today. Very happy! However, did anyone else’s palette appear fingerprinted up? Big fingerprint smudge on the front and the mirror was a mess. It doesn’t appear to have been used.

Reply ButtonReply

annalily5

I just got my box and I love the palette so much. Can’t want to try the undereye masks as well!
I recieved the Hush Blush, if anyone would be interested in trading for Prim Vixen, just let me know!

I will swap if you want. You wanted the bright pink one just to confirm? Nicolesimon2008 at hotmail

Question: Does this sub usually have coupons?

I got the Hush blush shade and love it. A little goes a long way. Also works as a transition eyeshadow. Boxycharm hit a home run with me this month!

Reply ButtonReply

Maggie

I’m now really excited for this box!

Reply ButtonReply

couronne.de.roses

Me too!

This is perfect for spring and complements the pur palette that they sent in a previous month with Metallics and neutrals! Can also use with the glam metals palette for some spring Smokey looks. I’m so excited. I’ll pass on blushes tho… they never get a shade right for me. Yay?

Reply ButtonReply

Julie

This will be my last box for a while since I needed a break from the hoard of makeup I haven’t started much less will be able to get through but I am super happy with this box. the colors of the palette are actually fun and perfect for playing up in the warmer weather which I hope will be arriving soon! also been on a major eye gel kick so it’s a great addition. I gotta say this is one of my favorite boxes since it always has something I will use generally the one item costs more than the whole box did. I hope they keep up their amazing standard so I can return to it once I made a dent in my stockpile.

I think the thing I’m most excited for besides the palette is the eye masks. Allergy season has started for us and my eyes are itchy, watery and burning. I plan to pop those masks straight into the fridge and use them on days that my eyes just can’t with the pollen. If they do what they claim in the process…well there’s an added bonus. If they don’t…it’ll still feel great on my eyes and that’s all I really want out of life right now.

Pollen already has me tore up and it’s only March. I get to deal with this until around December. Im willing to try just about anything for relief…including using eye masks as allergy relief patches for my eyes. If it works out South Mane will probably be wondering 1. Why I’m buying so many 2. What I’m doing with them. 😁

Reply ButtonReply

annalily5

Oh that’s genius! I’m going to have to try this!

Reply ButtonReply

Katy

I am really looking forward to getting my box now. At first I really didn’t want the Vixen shade of blush because I very fair and redheaded but after seeing it swatched and blended out some, I now know that with a light hand I can totally make it work for me. And the pallete is so pretty and I also love that they are sending out some fun shades. I had so many neutral palettes that I gave away to a friend because I never use them. And those brush sayings are so cute!! Hurry to me Boxycharm! I want a play date.

Reply ButtonReply

Kelly

Great review! For some reason it’s made me even more excited to get my Boxycharm in the mail!!! I can’t wait to get my hands on that palette to try out those orange/peachy shades!

Reply ButtonReply

Liz Cadman

Yay! Thank you – and glad to hear you are excited about this box! 🙂

Reply ButtonReply

justmissjamey

Yaaay!! Looks pretty good. I hope I get the darker blush….and not sure about the eye masks, but super excited for this box!!

Reply ButtonReply

shannon311

If you get the lighter blush and I get the darker I will totally trade and pay all shipping!! There is no way I can make that dark pink blend on me. I am very pale.

Reply ButtonReply

Redhed36

I am pleased with this box. I just hope I don’t get the that shade of blush. Redhead and hot pink.

Reply ButtonReply

Kc

Looks very trendy like for a young crowd. I’m sure ppl who want bright colors will be happy.

Reply ButtonReply

Sarah

I’m nearly 42, and mixing the brights with neutral undertones are an amazing way to mix it up. Do a semi-bold eye and a neutral lip for a fun look that is classic with a kick.

Age is just a number 😊

Besides, it could be much worse. Like, it could be a pot of glitter, and then you’d either have to give it away before opening it, or open it and risk having glitter in your house until the sun explodes…and even then…

Reply ButtonReply

Bonnie

Out of 12 shades, 2 maybe 3 are brights. That still leaves mostly neutrals in this palette.

Reply ButtonReply

Stef

Makeup colors are ageless! I’m just glad it’s NOT another neutral palette.

Reply ButtonReply

Darcie

I’m 60. Hope I can pull off this eye pallette. I’m just so excited to get something other than neutrals!!!

Reply ButtonReply

RoguesEn3D

I agree with each of you girls! Color knows no age, and I have so many neutrals that I don’t ever want to wear neutrals again (and I don’t wear much to begin with). The world is full of color! …unless you live in a desert with sand dunes surrounding you. Then the world is very neutral.

Bella01

I’ll be rocking it with you! No age limits here when it comes to make-up
