Fair Trade Friday is an organization that helps to empower women and battle poverty through dignified, sustainable industry (craftsmanship). They have three subscriptions to choose from that send fairly traded items from around the world: The Original Box, Bracelet of the Month, and Earrings of the Month. I have subscribed to the Earring of the Month box for years now, and I am really excited to have this opportunity to review the Original Box!

Fair Trade Friday Original Box March 2018 Review

This pamphlet was included. It has information on all the contents of this month's package, plus information on the artisans who created them. It's really informative!

These little cards were also included, giving some info on Fair Trade Friday and their parent organization, Mercy House Global.

Gray Tassel Earrings by Have Hope

Gray Tassel Earrings by Have Hope - Retail Value $24

Wow, these are big earrings! The cotton tassels are 4" long! They are made of brass reclaimed from bicycle parts by women artisans in Kenya. They were taught jewelry making skills in the hope that this new industry will allow them to support themselves and their families. I think they are really pretty!

Custom Floral Bag by Joyn

Custom Floral Bag by Joyn - Retail Value $40

I absolutely adore this bag! It's so pretty and perfect for spring! It makes me want to go straight to the farmer's market. The cotton is handwoven and stamped with hand carved wooden blocks in India. The handle is leather. These were made by women affiliated with Joyn, an organization in India that helps to create sustainable industry. I love it!

The Verdict: I am loving my subscription to Fair Trade Friday Original Box! I like both items this month but obviously the bag is my favorite. This is my new spring go-to bag! I really like all the information they provide to show how your subscription directly impacts the lives of others. It makes the subscription seem that much more special.

I just joined last month as I have turned toward empowering and natural care of my life and skin. I love the tote. I really need to start wearing earrings or my daughter will steal these 🙂

I love this box idea and would totally subscribe if it wasn’t pushing a religious message on the workers it is helping.

Agreed. I signed up without realizing that and then discovered just how religious and how much they emphasize bringing their religion to these women. It makes me uncomfortable and also makes me wonder what happens to the women who don’t want to be apart of their religion? No help for them then?

Anyway as much as I love the idea and the beautiful products I can’t support this company anymore.

Hi, Liz, We understand your concern! While we are a faith- based ministry and partner with other faith- based ministries, religion is not forced upon the women and we still help those who do not share the same beliefs as we do. In fact, most do not. Many women and their families have different religions than us and that is okay– our belief in Christ calls us to love, serve, and help others, regardless of their personal belief system. While we hope one day they do share our beliefs, it is not a requirement of employment. Blessings, Danea

That is often the case that people feel ‘forced’ into the faith to receive benefits and the people are already so vulnerable. Its confusing because I want to support companies that help, but I’m not sure I want to help in this way. I do understand that the evangelical groups believe that they really are helping people when they find faith, but I need to find other ways to help.
