Gwynnie Bee is a clothing rental subscription service that caters to women between the sizes of 0-32. Gwynnie Bee allows you to select items you like and they are put in a virtual closet. The chosen items sent to you are at random, but you can select priority pieces to be sent to you first.

Confession: I've never done a clothing rental subscription before. I didn't quite understand the value behind the clothing rental model, but since Gwynnie Bee added additional size ranges to their plus size collection, I decided it was time to take advantage of the first-month free offer and give it a go!

In addition to their main clothing rental service, Gwynnie Bee also has a marketplace on their site where you can buy strongly discounted used rental pieces and brand new accessories, underwear, and work out gear as well.

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Good to know: Gwynnie Bee comes with pre-paid envelopes to return your items - you can exchange items as frequently as you like for the same monthly fee. Shipping is free both ways. (Make sure to log in to your account and mark your items as returned as soon as you ship them back. If your account is in good standing, they will automatically start processing your next order so that you can get as many items as possible!)

Gwynnie Bee Review

To me, a large part of the Gwynnie Bee value is seeing how many new items you can wear in one month, so shipping times are important!

To help give you a better sense of what you should expect: I joined Wed, March 7th. I received this shipment Monday, March 12th. I received my next shipment 3 full days after I mailed back my items. (For example, in this case, I wore these items Monday and Tuesday, shipped them back Wednesday, and received my next package on Saturday.)

I'm reviewing the 2 items-out-at-a-time $69/month plan. This is the first shipment in my free month trial.

On to my first dress:

ESHAKTI Abstract Stripes Fit And Flare Dress - Estimated Retail Cost $79.95

(Size 6)

The top of this dress is made from a soft, jersey stretch fabric and features a front snap button. And I love the movement of this printed crepe skirt:

The back features a hidden zipper:

My overall thoughts: Fab dress! Perfect fit, and such a unique and attention-grabbing design!

Next up:

UNIQUE VINTAGE Kelsie Dress In Black And Light Pink Roses Print (Retail Cost $78)

(Size Large)

Lesson learned - if you're getting wrap dresses from Gwynnie Bee - you might need to wear a camisole underneath to keep them work-appropriate. This dress is gorgeous but pretty revealing!

This jersey wrap dress is partially lined, with the additional wrap piece slightly sheer.

My overall thoughts: This is such a romantic dress and the wrap dress style is so flattering. (If you love wrap dresses and fit and flare styles, you will love Gwynnie Bee's inventory.)

Verdict: My own closet is about 90% black/grey/neutral, so I really had fun picking out my Gwynnie Bee items and adding some pops of color to mix up my style a bit! I was impressed with the quality of the clothing, and everything arrived in pristine, clean condition. (Gwynnie Bee takes care of the dry cleaning.)

I also appreciate that Gwynnie Bee adds new items to their inventory almost every day. I'm an online shopping addict, so browsing and adding items to my Gwynnie Bee closet daily is fun! (If you want to help me pick out what items in my closet to send next, check out today's MSA Instagram stories and vote!)

I think this is a great subscription for anyone looking for work-appropriate clothing. With their shipping times on the $69 a month plan, I'm able to get 2 new dresses each week, so that's a significant contribution to my weekly outfits. (They also offer tops, jackets, pants, etc., but I think dresses are a complete outfit and get you the most bang for your buck!)

One value I didn't realize until I shipped back my items: Most of the dresses are dry-clean only, and I'm saving at least $10 a dress because Gwynnie Bee covers the dry cleaning. At 2 dresses a week, that's $80 in dry cleaning costs for free, and the clothes to wear, too! Given that the plan is $69 a month, I think the value is definitely there.

One caveat: the sizing recommendations seemed way off. When you first sign up for Gwynnie Bee, you answer a few quick questions about your clothing sizes to help them recommend what size you should order in any item. Love the idea behind this feature, but I found the sizing recommendations to be WAY off. Gwynnie Bee originally only featured plus size clothing, but recently started carrying sizes 0-32, so I'm wondering if this is a situation where their algorithm now needs some tweaking.

Here's an example:

The recommended a size 12 for me, but I ordered a size 6 instead, and it fit perfectly. Also, even after I rated that size 6 dress with 5 stars, the suggested sizing for this dress or the eShakti brand didn't update. (For reference, I'm a size large in dresses at Forever 21, and that's the info I gave Gwynnie Bee that prompted this recommendation of a size 12.)

Not a huge deal, but just something to watch out for. If you're not sure what size to order, I recommend checking out the customer reviews and going to that clothing brand's site for their sizing info.

To Wrap Up: If you are able to wear items soon after you receive them and ship them back within days, you can really get a good value out of this subscription.

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, the pieces I received are available to rent or purchase at Gwynnie Bee!

Omg I m in LOVE with the first skirt and top. It fits you perfect and Iwould but it if I was you..If you can get it at a discount. I love the colors and the look as well. I also think you could wear it to any time. A Spring or Summer wedding or any party. Date night with your hubby. So gorgeous and a keeper.

Love the Eshakti dress on you! It is gorgeous! Also, yes, I always measure myself because of the weird scope of sizing, especially since losing weight. Eshakti is a great brand, though. I hope they carry more pieces by them!

I’ve used GB for years too! I enjoy it a lot and I’ve gotten a LOT of use from it over losing weight the last couple of years.

I tend to totally ignore Size Advisor (he’s drunk and should go home). I either order the size I typically feel is right or I check the measurements and go by that.

Interesting – when I did Gwynnie Bee before, there wasn’t enough selection at my size 10 range so would like to try at some point now that they’ve expanded. It definitely taught me to know my measurements so I could work with the size charts, which has really helped with things like thredup.

I would love to try one of these clothing rental subs but at 5 feet tall, everything I wear has to be hemmed.

I’m 5′ tall and do Le Tote, I just look at the pictures and order dresses/skirts that are above the knee or shorter and ankle length pants, and have had pretty good luck with them fitting. Also on tops if the sleeves are long on the models I steer clear of them.

I get four clothing items for $59 so if something doesn’t work I still typically have a couple other things to wear. I end up with about 2 totes a week.

Shipping can get slower as the month goes on. It was about three days at first but slowed to six in my free month.

Thanks for the heads up. I’m doing a full month to see how many dresses I can get in the free service. I’ll keep you posted!

Liz,

Holy cow, that wrap dress is *gorgeous* on you! It looks like it was made for you. I kinda definitely want it now lol.

Is it a true wrap dress? Are the sleeves sheer?

I’m surprised that a large would fit considering the first dress was a size 6. That’s really helpful for me given that I’m also roughly a size 6. I would have for sure bought a S or a M at most. Thanks for the heads up!

It’s a true wrap dress, and I don’t think the sleeves were sheer. (I’ve returned it already so I don’t have it in front of me, so I’m not 100% sure on the sheer sleeve question, though. Sorry!)

Joy

Thanks! That’s super helpful.

I’m doing the free trial now. I’m a size 8 or 10 and agree that their sizing suggestions are way off! They keep recommending XL for me. They do include sizing charts for most brands, so I go by them (unless I’m already familiar with a brand).

One other advantage not mentioned in this review is that if you like an item and want to keep it, you can buy it at a discounted price (they list retail and “your price” in your closet once you receive an item). And then they also have an online outlet where you can buy used clothing (though since they only recently started having smaller sizes, there’s not much in there for those!)

Liz Cadman

Good point about keeping items you love at a discounted price! I’ve been focusing on seeing how many dresses I can get in one free month so I forgot about that! Thanks!

About how discounted are the “keep it” prices? This is the closest I’ve come to ever trying a clothing rental subscription… I feel like I have a ton of fall and winter clothes but, in the spring, I’m at a loss.

AAC

Hmm. I’m a subscriber to Le Tote where you get 3 pieces of clothing and 2 accessories for $59/month and I get similar ship times (except for the couple times where USPS took forever to ship something but not Le Tote’s fault) because they do everything by priority mail. The same plan on Gwynnie Bee is $95 without accessories!! At that price, you might as well spend a tiny bit more and go with the Unlimited plan at Rent the Runway where you get super high end clothing for rent.

Liz , great review. I’ve used Gwynnie Bee for years and my suggestion for the sizing is to choose a brand that has consistent within sizing; it’s easy to change your “brand and size for the size advisor so switch around and find what chooses your size for brands you’ve tried if that makes sense.

I’m also always looking at 1st fit reviews to see if an item runs true to size etc also. If you use the Return notification for your packages you definitely get items faster and you can request pickup through USPS choosing priority mail return.

I like GB because I shopped a lot for clothes and don’t shop as much now and I love the variety of items I get through GB.

Thanks for this great review. Do you know if the first month free offer is ongoing, or is it for a short time?

Reply ButtonReply

Anna

Shana they always offer a free trial. I’m sure Liz can chime in if that’s changed but as a member I see the try free when I sign in a lot.

The first dress is so pretty. I came to this review because I saw the picture on the posts list and was like WOW. My only concern is sizes, from size 6 to size L is a big deviation. Size 6 should be S not L. Too much gamble with the size spectrum.

Reply ButtonReply

Jenai

Sizing varies by brand, so a size 6 in one brand really can be a size L in another. Their size advisor attempts to take this into account. I wore stuff from 8 to XL in my free month.

Eileen

Both dresses are gorgeous!

I am so excited they added more sizes! We tried this subscription several times, both my wife and I. I’m a 6-8 and she’s a 10-12, but we would both try on and wear the dresses. I bought two dresses from them that fit a little smaller. I didn’t like how they considered 10 plus size but since they’re including all sizes now it doesn’t matter. They’re subscription works great so this is why I’m happy! Woohoo way to go GB!

You’re definitely not a size large, Liz. I think Forever 21 large is juniors, so it’s like a women’s 4 or 6. I would say you appear no larger than a at most in the photos. Anyhow, I adore the first dress. The second dress doesn’t do you justice, but it’s still cute. 😉

Liz Cadman

Oh, I just realized I didn’t properly write how the Gwynnie Bee sizing tool works – you tell them the brand + the size, so I would have expected them to factor in that a large at Forever 21 is smaller in other brands. Hope that helps clarify!

And thanks for the feedback on the dresses! This subscription is definitely going to push me out of my fashion comfort zone 🙂
