My Japan Box KitKat February 2018 Review
Dark Matcha Green Tea KitKats (12 minis) - Retail Value $5.00
These are similar to the matcha KitKats I received last month, but not quite the same. The difference is that these are "Dark Matcha" and have little flecks throughout. I don't have the other ones in front of me to do a taste test, but I feel like these aren't as sweet as them since I'm not getting as heavy of a latte vibe here. They are slightly bitter like matcha tends to be, but are still on the sweet side. Here is where I wish My Japan Box would send an info card and give me the deets on all of these! I can certainly dig around on the internet, but don't always find what I'm looking for.
Luxury Yogurt with Double Berry and Almond KitKats (13 single minis) - Retail Value $12.90
My my my, I did not know there were LUXURY KitKats. I'm such a peasant. These are so luxurious, in fact, that you only get one mini treat instead of the usual twin action. This is a thing of beauty, though. It certainly looks high class and I shall treat it as such by eating it with white satin gloves. Cracking open the wrapper unveils a creamy yogurt scent that pierces your nose with sweetness. The top is encrusted with dried cranberries + raspberries (that's where the "double" berry comes into play) and crushed almonds. This is truly a decadent experience which is equal parts sweet and tart.
Strawberry KitKats (12 minis) - Retail Value $6.25
Man, dang. I got this flavor last month in my first shipment! I mean, the strawberry is surprisingly good, but with "over 200 flavors in Japan" I didn't think I'd get a repeat in only my second box. 🙁 As I mentioned, these also seem to be reasonably easy to find online to purchase, so it's not as obscure as something I'd expect from a Japanese KitKat specific subscription (wow- try to say that 10 times fast). The strawberry flavor in these nearly knocks you on your butt with sweet fruity flavor.
Citrus Golden Blend KitKats (3 minis)
Another duplicate from last month! For shame! This is also just a small pack of three minis, so it's the smallest taste and I can't share them with friends much. The citrus is another flavor I didn't think I'd like but is really tart and delicious. I wondered what citrus had to do with the baseball theme of the box last month and a smarty pants Shannan mentioned halftime oranges in the comments, which sounds like a good connection. Shows how much I know about baseball. Thanks, Shannan!
Verdict: I can't believe these words are coming out of my fingertips, but the My Japan Box KitKat subscription was sort of a let down this month. Out of four flavors they sent, two were duplicate flavors that I received last month. The bags of Japanese KitKats I can find online vary wildly in price, so it's hard to really pin down whether this subscription is worth the $29.00 price tag. If they include super-rare flavors, I'd be willing to shell out some cash, but so far I'm kinda bummed. [insert Tyra "I was rooting for you" gif here]
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. since boxes are mailed at the beginning of the month, it looks like you have until the end of March to sign up for April.
Value Breakdown: At $29 for this box, you're paying approximately $0.73 per mini KitKat or $7.25 per flavor (even though there were only 3 of the citrus).
