Turntable Kitchen Coffee & Vinyl Pairing March 2018 Review
After trying out both their ingredient and recipe-based Pairings Box as well as their Coffee + Vinyl Pairings box, I decided that the coffee version is much more suited for me since I am much too lazy to buy all the ingredients to complete some of their tasty recipes. I am always in need of coffee though, and this subscription will introduce me to new music while I enjoy a new origin each month.
It comes with an info sheet that talks about the coffee as well as the 7″.
Each delivery also comes with a digital mixtape they've put together. You can only access it if you're a monthly subscriber and logged into the website.
Slate Coffee Roasters Kenya Kapsakisio AA Coffee, 340 g- Retail Value $21.00
Turntable Kitchen always includes a pound of coffee from Seattle's Slate Coffee Roasters who focus on single-estate coffees and roasting in small batches.
Lucky me once again! I started my subscription in a month where the coffee comes from Kenya. I love African coffees due to their light and fruity nature, and this one from Mt. Elgon, Kenya is not a disappointment. The info sheet lists tasting notes like apple, rich caramel, and green grape while Slate's website says "Tropical fruit, ripe cherry, and citrus zest". I'm not sure which I can pick up but both sound delicious to me and I love the overall light finish. I made mine with a pour-over and love the way it turned out.
Fenne Lily, 3.09 EP 7"
I'm not sure exactly what it is, but I immediately got a "female Sufjan Stevens" vibe from Bristol-based Fenne Lily. Her voice is really soft and beautiful yet haunting, which goes perfectly with her simple guitar, and the drums (and sometimes piano) that back her up. These delicately slow yet catchy songs are really great for a dreamy day of relaxing and would be perfect on a mix tape for a heart-wrenching crush. I can be really picky about new music (especially female vocals for some reason), but I instantly took to her emotionally commanding voice. I wouldn't be surprised to see some fans quietly weeping at a live performance. As far as the vinyl goes, it has been pressed with a beautiful cream color that matches the airy and light vibes that Fenne puts forth. Since Turntable Kitchen releases all of these record themselves, this is exclusive to the subscription which makes it that much more special for fans.
Verdict: The Turntable Kitchen Coffee & Vinyl Pairing subscription is just what the doctor ordered for me. Having a pound of delicious artisan coffee and a new 7" (my favorite form of vinyl) delivered to my doorstep each month is what dreams are made of. For $30, I got coffee with a value of $21, which leaves the record to have a cost of about $9.00. New 7"s normally go for anywhere from $5-$10 depending on the rarity and color variant, so it's really not a bad value.
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? It's hard to say for sure, but new subs can take up to 3 weeks to process and ship, so it's doubtful. Mine took about 4 weeks, but they were quick to respond to my email, so you can always reach out with questions.
Value Breakdown: At $30 ($25 + $5 shipping) for this box, it's like paying $15 a piece for each item.
