Apollo Surprise Box April 2018 Review
When you sign up for Apollo Surprise Box, they will have you answer some questions to get a feel for your tastes!
You first begin with your gender. Too bad you can't skip this or have an "either" option. Who's to say what items are more "male" or "female" when it comes to personal preference?
You'll then choose which categories you're interested in (I chose Home Decor, Kitchen, Fancy Food, Outdoor, Beauty & Accessories, and Terrarium & Garden).
Then the styles you are attracted to (I chose Cute, Minimalist, Punk, Vintage, and Modern).
You will then choose which plan you want, and when you want it delivered before adding your shipping and payment info.
Here's the packing list that shows the cost of each item on their website and how much you saved by subscribing. The total retail value came to $55.83. It looks like their math is wrong though and I actually saved $25.83 (not $15.83) since my subscription was $30.00. Shipping also isn't included on this sheet though, so you can subtract $4.99 from that savings.
Each item came packaged in its own box or bubble wrap.
Marimo Aqua Terrarium Kit - Retail Value $32.99 (found here for $29.99)
Each item also has an accompanying info card that has a short description. I've never heard of Marimo balls before, but the card says they are green algae (or moss) balls that are found in only a few lakes in the world and quite popular in Japan.
Here are all of the parts in the kit.
I was pleased to see some Studio Ghibli characters I am familiar with along with this sea fan, all of which will serve as decoration and keep my Marimo company.
There are also shells for more decoration.
And of course some colored gravel.
Here are my two new friends! We've named them Neil and Gary here at the office after our beloved mail carriers.
Another sheet comes with it detailing all of the included pieces.
Then how to assemble and take care of them on the other side.
Here they are in their new happy home! I put all of the items in the globe, filled with cool tap water, then hung it on the metal stand.
There is a hole near the top of the glass globe so you can reach in to place everything and of course to fill with water.
A close up of the Marimo with friends. Cute!
Sheep Coasters in Grey - Retail Value $16.87
The next item is a sheep that is actually made of felt coasters.
It comes in this sleekly designed box.
Here are all of the pieces to assemble.
I checked it against the key on the front which also gave me a vague description of how to assemble it. How very Ikea of them.
Tadaa! Pretty cute, right?
Each felt circle (in various sizes) can be slipped off to use as a coaster.
The only flaw is that there isn't anything securing the back ones on so they can easily slip off of the wooden body.
There's an alternate wooden rod to put in the head if you aren't feeling the felt ears.
Here it is in use!
Metal Clover Bookmark - Listed Retail Value $6.98
Next, there's a metal bookmark that has a dangling clover charm.
It comes in a nice gift box, which is great since I think I may pass this on to my sister-in-law who is Irish and loves clovers.
In between the heart-shaped piece that has the green clover stamped in it and the part that slides into the book, there's a blank piece that looks like it could be engraved if so desired.
Here is it in a book so you can see how it looks.
Mother's Day Card - Retail Value $1.99
Finally, there is a Mother's Day Card. Since this box ships close to mid-month, it makes sense that they sent it with April just in case the May box would be too close to Mother's Day. It has a dark background with bright red flowers and a white border around the "Happy Mother's Day!" greeting in white script lettering.
The card doesn't open, it just has a white space on the back to write a message, like a postcard. It comes with a cream colored envelope as well.
The "magic" thing about this card though is when you use the Apollo App to unlock a special message using augmented reality. I'm not confident that my Mom would be able to download the app and use it properly on her own, but if I were there I could take a picture of her as suggested.
Since my Mom is in another state, I had Andy take a photo of me holding the card within the app so you could see the end result. The bouquet of flowers pop up as soon as you point your phone's camera at the card and the message "Happy Mother's Day" is animated letter by letter. Very fun!
Verdict: Apollo Surprise Box surprised me again this month with four gifts that perhaps many Mothers would love. Two of them required assembly which I actually thought was kind of fun, and one encouraged me to download the Apollo App to get the full experience. This month's total value is $58.83, which exceeds the $34.99 box cost ($30.00 a month + $4.99 shipping).
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? The items you will receive are based on your preferences, so you aren't likely to get the same things I did. When you sign up, you can choose your delivery date window as well. However, anyone who signs up by April 30 and selects 1st -10th for delivery will receive a themed box in time for Mother's Day
