Astral Box March 2018 Review
I am so excited to have received my very first Astral Box! From the moment this box arrived, it felt very special and high-quality. The thoughtful design of the packaging and carefully wrapped contents commanded a somewhat reverent approach to exploring this box, I felt. This included card's quote was a bit hard to read due to its glitter-like effect, but it reads, "You can't pour from an empty cup. Take care of yourself first," a concept in which I fully believe. On the back is a packing list with info about each included product. Note that its values are listed in New Zealand dollars (NZD).
This second card explains that we're in the midst of a little three-box series on the theme of Mind, Soul, and Body. They call it the Empower Series. I subscribed at the tail end of the series, so the box I'm receiving is the one focused on caring for your body.
Zen Activated Charcoal Konjac Sponge – Retail Value $12.50 USD ($17 NZD)
I just received my first konjac sponge from another subscription box last month and have been enjoying using it on my face when I'm in the shower. I'm happy to have this one as a backup for when that one needs to be retired! I've read that activated charcoal konjac sponges are sometimes said to pull harmful toxins from your face, but that was proven not to be entirely true. Either way, I love feeling the natural fibers of this sponge on my skin and I also like that you technically don't have to use any sort of cleanser with it, as sometimes face wash can leave my face feeling stripped of its natural oils.
Coconut Vibes Loose Leaf Tea - Listed Value $15.44 USD ($21 NZD)
I just started to feel that looming sore throat that creeps in on the first day of a cold when I got this box, so I was excited to find a tea inside. Of its blend of South African honey bush, coconut, and manuka leaf, coconut is the only ingredient I'm familiar with! Turns out honey bush is similar to rooibos tea and has a honey-ish flavor to it. Manuka leaf seems to have all sorts of benefits such as alleviating acid reflux, helping with acne and eczema, and preventing tooth decay. I'm about 19 weeks pregnant and am experiencing the acid reflux, skin impurities, and sensitive gums that come along with it, so these benefits are especially enticing to me. Turns out, due to my cold, I wasn't able to taste the complexity of the flavor, but its coconut-y scent did me well.
Tailor Polish Every Other Day Scrub & Mask — Retail Value $25.72 USD
I've been seeing more and more products that can double as a face scrub and a mask. I love this concept! Knowing that what I'm washing my face with can safely stay on my skin for an extended length of time is a comfort and a sign to me that the ingredients used are high-quality. From the Tailor website:
Tailor Polish incorporates natural, micro pumice granules, bentonite clay and leading edge extract salicylic acid (wintergreen). These work synergistically to exfoliate, deeply cleanse and reduce breakouts leaving you with smooth, invigorated skin.
Like I mentioned above, my face has been breaking out a bit lately, as well as feeling rather dry from the lingering winter and a nose that's constantly being kept after with a tissue. So, I thought I'd use this product as an excuse to take 15 minutes to relax and apply it as a mask. For as many sheet masks as I've done, I realized this was my first go at a clay mask. It was a wild ride!
Here's what the product looks like freshly squeezed out of the tube. I put a little on my arm before deciding to do the face mask, so I figured I'd include a photo of that for kicks.
Oh my gosh so this is, like, moments after I completed applying the mask to my face, and it already started to harden and tighten to the point that I couldn't even smile! As I applied it, the clay felt cool and refreshing on my skin. I could feel the very fine exfoliant between my fingers, but it didn't feel harsh going on at all. Then the tightening began right away, even before it dried. After 15 minutes, the mask felt extremely stiff, like paper mache, and I could see how it was extracting impurities from the pores on my nose. That was cool to see! I admittedly started to feel a little claustrophobic (a rare thing for me) at the end of my allotted time and kind of felt panicked to wash it off! It wasn't difficult to remove at all...I ran warm water and used a washcloth to gently help wipe it off, per the instructions. Perhaps I could have used a softer washcloth because between the terry cloth's fibers and the exfoliant, the removal process started to feel really abrasive on my skin. Once it was completely washed off and my face was rinsed, my skin felt crazy soft to the touch, but it also felt kind of burnt from the abrasiveness. I did this mask shortly before bed, and my skin felt back to normal by the time I went to sleep. Come morning, it still felt soft to the touch.
Jade Roller — Listed Value $27.20 USD ($37 NZD, found here for $6.99 USD)
Are jade rollers the best-kept secret of the beauty industry? I mean, I know they aren't a secret at all, but I couldn't believe how simultaneously soothing and refreshing it felt the first time I used one. The goal of a jade roller is to help alleviate puffiness, promote cell turnover and circulation, and improve skin elasticity and tone. Plus, it just feels amazing to give your face a little massage! The Astral Box packing list has this shown at a pretty high price point, which is consistent with the price at which jade rollers are sold at several recognizable online retailers. I honestly am not sure what the difference is between those and the inexpensive one I found on Amazon; they're all made of jade. Either way, I'm so happy to have this wonderful tool!
Acupressure Rings, Set of 2 — Listed Value $15.44 USD ($21 NZD, buy a set of 5 here for $10.99 USD)
When I first pulled this pair of acupressure rings out of their little drawstring pouch, I had no idea what I was looking at! They clearly weren't jewelry, but I definitely had the urge to put them on my fingers, so maybe something deep inside me felt the need for the healing they had to offer. I found that acupressure rings are said to improve circulation, energy, and concentration. It feels really cool to roll them up and down your fingers—the gold one is a little stiffer than the silver one, so you can choose your preferred experience—and I can also see them being a good alternative to the gadgets that are available nowadays to keep people's hands occupied. I think these would make a good, unique gift for some friends and family members and will have to keep them in mind for that!
Gold Mandala Art Print — Listed Value $11.03 USD ($15 NZD)
This print is beautiful and I'm so happy it arrived completely intact and unbent in my box! It's not a very large print, as you can see in comparison to my fingers, but it's one I would absolutely frame and add to my gallery wall or in some surprising nook of my home. If you can't tell from the photo, the mandala is metallic gold and beautifully shiny. I can't wait to put it on display!
Verdict: I am really happy with my first month of Astral Box. I am always game to get down on some self-love and the products provided to me on that theme are thoughtful, of high quality, and natural. I love that! Based on a combination of retail values and listed values, the items in this box add up to about $107 USD, which is within the $72-110 USD value that was promised by Astral Box. I'd say that feels accurate!
