BBQ Box March 2018 Review

BBQ Box March 2018 Card front

The card that’s included boasts a recipe from Mr. Mixon himself, offering insight on how to use all of the delicious goodies that are in the box!

BBQ Box March 2018 Card back

Every month is a new recipe, and this month is a shish kabob recipe! Kabobs are a great way to utilize the grill, and I’m so excited to see a recipe that encourages so many veggies. The recipe is illustrated with chicken, though Myron mentions that steak or pork could also be substituted in here. I think this recipe would be awesome for a big group of friends over for dinner - I have nothing against burgers and hot dogs, but shish kabobs are so impressive for a cookout. Plus, they’re delicious with standard picnic-style sides and salads.

BBQ Box March 2018 Jerky front BBQ Box March 2018 Jerky back

Fusion Jerky, Lemon Pepper Chicken, 3 oz. - Retail Value $6.99

The snack to tide me over while cooking was a nice change - chicken jerky! I love chicken jerky and this had great flavor. I picked up more of the pepper than the lemon, but the jerky was a nice balance of firm without being too tough. I did like the pepper flavor - it added some nice heat to the smokiness of the jerky.

BBQ Box March 2018 Marinade

World Harbors Lemon Pepper with Garlic Marinade, 16 oz. - Buy a pack of 6 for $16.32

I was thrilled to see a marinade in this month’s box! The instructions say to combine this bottle with both the steak sauce and the seasoning packet, but outside of this recipe, I think this marinade would be excellent for so many applications. Veggies, like in the suggested shish kabobs would be really delicious with this, and I think that it would be awesome on shrimp, too. Mmm, shrimp kabobs!

BBQ Box March 2018 Steak sauce

Braswell’s Vidalia Onion Steak Sauce, 9.5 oz - Retail Value $4.50

This stuff is so good! Myron’s recommendation is to include mushrooms on the skewers, and I absolutely looove mushrooms. I personally think that this steak sauce would be amazing on some grilled portobello mushroom caps. Vidalia onions are one of the sweetest varieties of onion, which explains the delicious sweet note in this otherwise savory sauce.

BBQ Box March 2018 fire front BBQ Box March 2018 fire back

FireWire Marinade Kit - Peppered Garlic & Herb, 1 oz. - Retail Value $13.99

This is the last component of the marinade mixture, but on its own, the directions suggest adding this mix to either wine or balsamic vinegar. This is a peppered garlic variety, which would mix well with the other marinades for the shish kabob recipe, but I think it would be absolutely fantastic on a firm fish steak, like swordfish or shark.

BBQ Box March 2018 skewers out

Bamboo Kabob Skewers, Set of 8 - Buy a set of 200 for $9.99

Shish kabob just wouldn’t be the same without the needed equipment! These bamboo skewers are a really nice quality - I like the tops of these skewers in particular because they serve as handles and are easy to use. As with any skewers, these bamboo ones need to be soaked for at least thirty minutes in water - that keeps them from catching fire on the grill.

VerdictWhat a great recipe this month! I loved all the lemon pepper flavors this month, and thought the directions to combine several of the flavoring ingredients was an interesting choice. This month’s jerky was absolutely delicious, too! This box made me think about the ways in which flavors can be layered, and I learned about new products that would be awesome to use for future kabobs.

I ordered a three month/three box set as a gift to my father. He mostly enjoyed it I think, but when you place your order, you are forced to set it to auto-renew (there is no other option) and the only way to cancel is to email their customer support. They don’t warn you when its about to renew, they just send the confirmation email AFTER the fact. I emailed them back within 30 minutes saying it was a mistake and my subscription needed to be cancelled, and they refused to refund my money or cancel the order. I have several other subscriptions (dollar shave club, lola, blue apron, etc) and none of them use these awful tactics. They send an email a couple days before the next order, they allow you to skip/pause/cancel online, and their products are actually great. Really disappointed in BBQBox and I intend on sharing my story everywhere possible, to hopefully keep others from falling victim to their tactics.
