Doodle Crate March 2018 Review
This month's project is making geometric candles! The skill foci are wax dyeing and candle molding. My nine-year-old son usually does these projects. This is the booklet that came in our box this month.
Here's a peek inside the booklet at the instructions. They were clear and well illustrated, so they were easy for my son to follow. The booklet also always contains good tips and suggestions for practicing.
These are all the supplies that were included for this month's project. Everything we needed was included except scissors and the microwave.
My son's first step was to fold the mold along the lines and then roll it into a tube and adhere it together into a roll. He put this one into the cup provided for pouring the wax.
He went ahead and folded all the molds at this stage.
Next, he filled a paper cup with wax flakes. He also added a chunk of crayons to try and get the color he wanted. He then microwaved the cup until everything was melted and stirred it together.
He then had to pour just a little wax in the bottom of the mold to create a seal. Otherwise, the wax would just fill up the cup. He had to let it dry for about 30 minutes. We happened to have a clothespin handy, so we used it to keep the wick straight, but the instructions said to use the stir sticks. Either would work fine.
Then he filled up the mold with wax and let it dry for an hour.
Once it was dry, he peeled the paper off the hardened candle.
These are my son's completed candles! They are so pretty! Doodle Crate also provided the little dishes to set them on. As you can see, for the second and third candles he poured them in layers and let them cool between stripes. We also added a few drops of nutmeg essential oil from a recent Aroma Box by Herb Stop, so our whole house smelled like cookies! Yum!
The Verdict: Doodle Crate is SO awesome! My son and I completely love this subscription. This month's project was a good challenge for him without being too difficult. I love his candles, they turned out really beautiful! I still can't believe what Doodle Crate can provide for $20. When you consider the materials, the curation, the project selection, and instructions, that's really a bargain!
