Frank And Oak Style Plan April 2018 Review

This is my first ever Frank And Oak box, and I am SO excited to try it! I feel like the style is right up my alley. Before we dive in, let me explain how the subscription works.

When you first sign up, you fill out a quick style profile that captures your sizing preferences and your sense of style. (Choose from Casual, Classic, and Creative). Then, you can pick whether you'd like a monthly or a bi-monthly plan and set your budget for each box (under $150 or $150+).

Before my box shipped, I got this email inviting me to hop in and preview my order.

This step reminded me a lot of the meal kit subscription boxes I've reviewed before! The page that opens up has about 12 products total on the page, and the three products set to ship in my order are at the top of the page and marked with green check marks. In my case, I was digging the blue button down, but I wasn't sure if the green pinafore was for me and the white top wasn't my favorite silhouette. So just like I would select or deselect items from a meal kit menu, I unclicked the checks on the looks I didn't love and clicked other items on the page that I did want to try. The plan includes three items, but you can choose more than three if you'd like. The prices are all discounted for you, so it's a deal compared to just shopping the regular site.

Here's the invoice for the three pieces I ended up with, plus the return instructions. (If you didn't know before, Frank and Oak is a Canadian company, which explains all the French you'll see on their packaging and paperwork!)

Okay, ready to see what I got?! Eeee! I'm so excited to show you these amazing clothes!

Satin Crepe Blouse in Light Blue, Size Medium - Retail Value $69.50, Member Price $59.50

This is the one preset Frank And Oak pick that I decided to stick with. I am smitten with this charming, flowy top! It's lightweight and semi-sheer and fits my frame like a glove. (I'm not used to women's button-downs being this accommodating to my broader shoulders!) I think the smaller collar and pocket are really sweet. There's a primness about this polyester top without it feeling stuffy in the least. I could totally wear this to a meeting or with jeans out to a lunch date!

Fluid V-Neck Tee in Washed Peach Whip, Size Medium - Retail Value $30.50, Member Price $25.50

So this seems like a basic t-shirt, but I am suuuuper particular about my tees. I prefer a V-neck or a crew neck, I don't like short or cap sleeves, I like things to be comfortable but not shapeless, I like stretchy fabric, but not fabric that's too thin and mamby pamby... You get the idea. Long story short, I LOVE this pretty peach tee! I think the cut is so unique with the flowy, longer-than-average short sleeves. And the 70% modal, 30% polyester fabric is softer than soft and surprisingly cool, too. This is the kind of thing that will be soooo comfortable on a hot summer day!

Debbie High-Waisted Skinny Jean in Jet Black, Size 30 - Retail Value $69.50, Member Price $59.50

I'm in LOVE with these black jeans! I usually wear a 10 in jeans, but I have a curvy bottom half that needs a lot of stretch to make it happy. Jeans for me are kind of a test for a subscription styling service since they're the hardest thing for me to shop for. If they nail it with the jeans (a.k.a. the hardest item to get right), then I feel confident they'll do a solid job with everything else. All of this is to say... Frank and Oak CRUSHED IT. These jeans feel so flattering and comfortable. They're skinnies, so they hug my body, but the 97% cotton, 3% spandex fabric is sturdy enough that it creates a smooth, sleek silhouette (not that stuffed-in sausage vibe that I feel with other jeans). I can't believe how comfy they are! Way to go, Frank and Oak!

Verdict: I review a bunch of different styling subscriptions. Most of them offer cute clothes. Most of them are priced reasonably. (In other words, you get what you pay for, in terms of the styling fee/cost to keep the items.) But Frank and Oak is different in all of the ways I've been wishing for. Let me break it down:

  • Other services feel more "trendy", while Frank and Oak features versatile, classic pieces that I expect to stay in my wardrobe season after season.
  • I still have some control over what I end up getting! The shopping experience is more curated (read: less overwhelming) than walking into a store, but I don't feel like I'm stuck with things I don't love.
  • I LOVE that Frank and Oak is making sustainable, ethical choices in its manufacturing processes. They're cutting down on water usage in their denim manufacturing, opting for sustainable materials, and are striving to continue to make better choices for people and the planet. That's something that I really really appreciate.

Oh, and yeah, the prices feel totally aligned with the quality of products I got! I'd liken Frank and Oak's looks to nicer pieces at the Gap. I know it's my first box, but I think I'm in love!

To Wrap Up:

Can I still get this box if I sign up today? No, each box is customized based on your style plan. Under the new $25 styling fee plan, boxes ship automatically on the 1st of the month, and you can log in 2 days before shipment to add or remove items or skip the month altogether. That said, you can still follow the product links above to shop these items for yourself from their site catalog!

Value Breakdown: I paid the member's price of $144.50 for the three items I received this month, which would have cost me $169.50 at their regular retail prices. That's a savings of about 15%! If I decide to return all three items, I will pay the $25 styling fee and will be refunded the remaining $119.50, but I can keep any one item at the discounted price and no styling fee will be charged.
